Claimant's barrister in controversial Brushell vs Hazeldean case shares his view

The barrister who represented Gemma Brushett, the pedestrian who sued cyclist Robert Hazeldean for hitting her although she was found to be partly liable, has given his view on the case

Aneurin Moloney says in his opening paragraph on a blog post: "I accept that I am not an independent observer of the case.  But I was one of only a handful of people who were present for the 2 days of the trial, and can add some important detail to that put out in the newspapers."

He then says in court, it was revealed that one witness (called Mr H in the blog) came forward who was of the opinion the defendant (Hazeldean) was to blame:

"The Claimant relied on Mr H as her only witness on the issue of liability. Mr H attended trial and was cross examined by the Defendant’s barrister.

"Mr H’s evidence included a voice memo that he had recorded on his mobile phone minutes after the accident in order to provide a more detailed account than that recorded by the police.  His witness statement expanded upon his police statement.  He described in Court that there was a ‘throng’ of pedestrians 5 or 6 deep crossing the road, and estimated that there were 50 people in this group.  He described that he slowed his bicycle because he felt that it was unsafe to proceed with people still crossing.

"Mr H said that he was overtaken by the Defendant, who was travelling at around 20mph and had sounded his airhorn.  Mr H considered that the Defendant accelerated as he approached the crossing.  He saw the Defendant collide with the Claimant who was crossing the road.  He remained of the view that the Defendant was to blame."

Moloney summarises: "There was more to this decision than the many of the newspaper articles conveyed.

"Based on the judge’s finding that the Claimant was using her mobile phone, it was absolutely correct that she was found to have significantly contributed to the accident.  However, the Defendant himself had conceded that he had accelerated towards a crossing which wasn’t clear of people.

"If any wider good has come from this case it is that the publicity may encourage cyclists to take out insurance to protect themselves in the event that their riding causes someone to suffer injury."

The case has garnered a significant amount of media attention, and a crowdfunder to help pay for Hazeldean's legal fees has now reached over £55,000. The page creator and Hazeldean have said any money left over will be donated to the Action Aid charity.

Tour Divide rider charged with illegal camping after black bear eats his food

Back Bear CREDIT National Park

You wouldn't get this happening on an audax in Wales...

A competitor on the bonkers 2,745 mile gravel race down the spine of the Rocky Mountains has been charged with illegal camping after he awoke to a black bear helping itself to the snacks in his panniers.

Camping outside of a designated campground is strictly forbidden in Banff.

Speaking to the Bow Valley Crag & Canyon, Bill Hunt, a Banff National Park conservation manager cited the dangers that illegal camping poses, not only to future campers but also to the bears, who can become comfortable approaching humans for food.

"The food was not secured in any way. It was lying on the ground in his pack outside his tent. He did not have bear spray. He waited scared inside his tent while the bear ate his food for an hour and just before midnight he called 911 after he feared for his safety. He said he glanced out occasionally and that he saw a light-colored bear but we’re not sure if there were two bears there."

To be fair, we'd stay put in our tent if there were bears outside!

Concluding, Hunt said "I imagine if a person is cycling to New Mexico they should have been able to find his way to Tunnel Mountain campground or noticed all the signs”.

Wiggo (sort of) gives his endorsement to Tour de France charity ride

Le Loop will see a group of riders complete stages 2-21 of the Tour de France a week ahead of the pros, in an effort to raise funds for the William Wates Memorial Trust. Ride Le Loop managed to get an endorsement from 2012 winner Bradley Wiggins himself, who was reminded the event goes on for the full three weeks rather than just a day: "Oh sh*t sorry, the whole three weeks apparently which is even better... I think you're mad!"

Police are reportedly trying to hand out tickets to cyclists, not drivers, after bike courier was killed in Manhattan on Monday morning

20-year-old Robyn Hightman became the 12th cyclist killed in New York City this year on Monday, hit by a truck driver who drove off unaware before returning to the scene shortly afterwards after being informed by a witness, according to CBS New York. The Gothamist reports that police in the area where Hightman was killed were found to be looking for cyclists committing minor traffic violations instead of ticketing drivers breaking the rules. Officer Carlos Negron told the Gothamist:

"Our unit is specifically the bicycle unit—whenever there's a pedestrian struck or a bicyclist struck, anything that involves a bike, we try to respond to it.

"As far as the female who passed away unfortunately, yesterday, I believe she was riding off the bike lane, you know. It's sad, but it's sad that she was off the bike lane, you know? Maybe if she had been on the bike lane, maybe she'd still be alive."

It's not illegal for cyclists in New York to ride out of a bike lane if there are surface hazards or obstructions in front such as vehicles or pedestrians.

20-year-old Hightman ran a cycle courier company, and was an ambassador for the Hagens Berman Supermint team while riding competitively for Spin Peaks. A vigil was held in New York yesterday, and the Supermint team have also left a lengthy tribute on their Instagram page

Backed by Demand Film and produced by Nickolas Bird and Eleanor Sharpe, this will be their follow-up to the popular 'MAMIL' documentary. Liggett said: “As we have been filming in secret at various locations and scanning the archive I was not aware how full my life has been and how privileged I have been to be a part of this wonderful sport and pastime of cycling.

“Demand Film did a great job with MAMIL and I know that they can be trusted to handle my story and share it with the world.”

British Cycling partner with This Girl Can to get more women cycling

British Cycling have linked up with the This Girl Can campaign, promoting the women-only HSBC UK Breeze rides that take place up and down the country while generally aiming to get more women on bikes.

The Breeze rides have been attended by over 250,000 women to date, and to mark the milestone the campaign will pull together the expertise of British Cycling and Sport England to continue working towards narrowing cycling's gender participation gap, called the 'Let's Ride' campaign.

Over the six week campaign, women who have been involved in the Breeze rides will discuss barriers to women's cycling identified by Sport England and British Cycling in targeted social media videos and adverts - these barriers include not feeling 'good enough', fear of judgement, a lack of confidence and not feeling safe.

Kate Dale, Sport England’s Campaign Lead for This Girl Can, says: “HSBC UK Breeze is one of the best widely available activities designed for women, as proven by the huge number of women that attend their casual rides each week. This Girl Can is designed to break down the emotional barriers women face when considering exercise. One of these emotional barriers is fear of judgement around capability, and HSBC UK Breeze is brilliant at addressing these barriers with friendly and knowledgeable female ride leaders who help attendees to build their confidence and skills.”

For more info, check out the This Girl Can website and for a list of Breeze rides head over to the Let's Ride page on the British Cycling website.

Stage 1

The second stage is 193km and suited to sprinters. It’ll start from the capital and head to Györ. Bit of a double-digit gradient kick 22km from the end, but nothing too serious.

Stage 2

Stage three (197km) will start in Székesfehérvár and finish in Nagykanizsa. It’s another one for sprinters.

The IAM RoadSmart report referenced in the ‘intent prediction’ software story below also recommends that driver training should be a life-long continuous process.

Tony Greenidge, IAM RoadSmart business development director, said: “Perhaps we should require people to retake their test after a certain number of years? There is a growing belief that we should.

“I cannot think of another single task as difficult, complex, important or as dangerous as driving on business, where quite literally, you can perform well for just an hour of your life – during the driving test – and that’s all that’s required for the next 60 years or more. Given the rapid changes in technology, legislation and congestion this just does not seem logical.”

Scientists call for spinach ban for athletes due to steroid-like effects

Scientists have called for spinach to be banned for athletes after discovering steroid-like effects.

Vice reports that researchers at the Freie Universität Berlin have recommended that a chemical called ecdysterone that is found in spinach should be added to WADA’s prohibited list due to potentially steroid-like effects.

They said: “Our hypothesis was that we would see an increase in performance, but we didn't expect it to be that big. We recommended to WADA in our report that the substance be added to the doping list. We think that if it increases performance, then that unfair advantage should be eliminated.”

You’d have to be eating Popeye-esque quantities of the green stuff to feel the benefits, though – 4 kilograms a day, in fact, or 40 of the 100 gram bags it often comes in at the supermarket.

The Dutch government has launched a publicity campaign urging cyclists to “Leave your phone in your pocket and save yourself a €95 fine” ahead of a new law banning people from using a mobile phone while riding a bike coming into force on Monday, reports dutchnews.nl.

The country’s transport minister, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, said: ‘In the traffic, an accident is just around the corner and this is why it’s important for all road users – including cyclists – to keep their eyes and minds on the road and not on their telephone screen.

“We often think that we can multi-task in traffic, but we really can’t, so please drive in ‘mono’ mode. I have a clear message for all cyclists: keep your phone, and your €95 in your pocket.”

Oregon cyclist sues city after workman places cable across cycle path

A cyclist is suing the city a Portland, Oregon, after a workman stretched a metal cable across a cycle path while it was closed for repairs.

James Thorne says the city was negligent in connection with the May 2018 incident, which happened in Kelley Point Park.

His lawsuit alleges that the cable was not clearly visible to riders, and that the city had failed to notify park users that the path was closed,

He sustained injuries to his back, neck and elbows and also had to undergo surgery on his left shoulder and right wrist.

Thorne is seeking $1 million in noneconomic damages for “pain, discomfort and interference with ordinary activities,” plus $86,000 in medical expenses, almost $85,000 in lost wages and $12,000 for damage to his bike.

Alex Dowsett wins national time trial championship for the sixth time

Alex Dowsett, who has been named in Katusha team for the Tour de France, will be riding the time trial stages in the colours of British national champion after winning the event for the sixth time in Norfolk yesterday.

Afterwards he said: “There were a few years where getting this jersey came quite easy and I guess I took it for granted. I think I will enjoy wearing it this time more than the other times I’ve had them. Today was a fight.

“I think I was down after one-third of the distance and this was a bit of a worry because I’d given a lot in this part of the course.

"Then at two-thirds it was touch and go, but then I brought it home well. We have some real fast guys in the Uk and the calibre of riders coming through is huge, so I don’t know when the last time in the national stripes will be so I’m going to enjoy every moment of this.”

French heatwave claims lives of two cyclists

This weekend saw the highest temperature ever recorded in France - 45.9 degrees Celsius - and now it has emerged that the heatwave has sadly claimed the lives of two cyclists, reports The Independent.

One of the victims, a 53-year-old man, died while he was taking part in a race in the Ariege department on Saturday, and with several other competitors falling ill, organisers cancelled the event.

The other fatality happened in the Vaucluse – the department where Mont Ventoux is located – with a rider dying after reportedly collapsing due to the heat.

Once again, if the British champ can do it so can you

Newly-crowned national TT and road champ Alice Barnes responded to the tweet showing the contents of her pockets: "It's a shame that things like this have to be pointed out and isn't the norm."

She's recently commented on her double victory in the TT and road race this morning, saying "it still hasn't sunk in".

Bit rude...

Simon Geschke was pretty reserved in his reply to this weird attempted burn. Here's the kit below in the CCC team's Tour de France reveal, and we reckon it don't look half bad.

01/07/2019, 08:48

Ever seen a better save than this?

With a moto behind showing the speedometer approaching 80km/h, the next thing we see is two-time Ironman world champ Jan Frodeno having a scary wobble as he approaches a corner on the 185km Ironman Frankfurt bike course. Frodeno keeps a cool head, hops over a road divider and manages to keep control of his bike as he briefly goes cross-country and pops out the other side unscathed.

While Frodeno shown handling skills every bit as impressive as a single discipline pro cyclist, the same can't be said of Brit Kimberley Morrison's flat-fixing skills - skip to 3hrs 24 mins in the feed above, and you will see Morrison struggling to fill her tube with a flat-fixing sealant that doesn't appear to want to go into the valve. She eventually reaches for a tube when it becomes apparent the damage is too great for the sealant to work, but doesn't seem to have the equipment to inflate the tyre. According to the results she eventually finished the bike course in over six and a half hours, about an hour and a half slower than most of her fellow female pros...

An unfamiliar sight...

...but one to get used to in 2019, as it's just occurred to us this will be the first time for three years that Sagan has lined up for a Tour de France without a world champion's jersey. Here he is in his bog standard, run-of-the-mill Bora-Hansgrohe kit while supporting his brother to a Slovak national champs win, looking like a normal professional cyclist but way cooler...

01/07/2019, 08:23

If the national champ can do it, so can you...

Alice Barnes triumphed on the 136km British National Road Champs course yesterday, becoming the first woman since Emma Pooley in 2010 to win both the senior national time trial and road race in the same year. She also shown that it can be done without littering, as some wannabe pros seem to think it's ok to do, with journalist Owen Rogers capturing the contents of her back pocket after she crossed the line.

On another note, wonder if Alice would have won by a greater margin if she'd have got through that Rice Krispie Square?

Man appeals for return of wife's classic bike he sold by mistake at yard sale

A Massachusetts man has appealed for the return of his wife's classic bike, which he sold by mistake at a yard sale, and which he belatedly learnt had huge sentimental value.

Allan Steinmetz told Boston25news.com that the bike, a yellow 1970s tourer from the French brand Motobecane, had been given to his wife on her 16th birthday more than 45 years ago by her father, a Holocaust survivor.

She planned to give it to their first grandchild.

"This bike is absolutely priceless to not only my wife but to her family, my children and she wanted to give this bike to our granddaughter one day, which I didn’t know," he said.

"It was important to my wife, I didn’t realize how… and that was the biggest mistake I’ve made this year so far," he added.

"He went out and bought the best bike money could buy and he wanted my wife to feel as special as he was."

14th cyclist of the year killed in New York, with Mayor promising to take action

Mayor Bill De Blasio released a statement calling for a crackdown on dangerous drivers, following the death of 28-year-old Devra Freelander who was involved in a collision with a cement truck in the Brooklyn area of the city:

“We are seeing a dangerous surge in cyclist deaths on our streets, and we are taking action. I have directed the NYPD to immediately launch a major enforcement action that will encompass every precinct and crack down on dangerous driving behaviour like parking in bike lanes. At the same time, I have charged the Department of Transportation with developing a new cyclist safety plan to make biking in our city safer. No loss of life on our streets is acceptable. Last year was the safest year on record—and we have to keep pushing the envelope and increasing our efforts until we achieve Vision Zero.”

Freelander was the 14th cyclist to be killed in NYC this year, which is already double the 2018 death toll. Mayor de Blasio is often criticised for the city's attitude towards cycle safety, with locals reporting that the standard response from police is simply to ticket cyclists breaking minor traffic laws; and although this appears to be the most forceful statement yet that action will be taken to crack down on dangerous driving, it appears many New Yorkers aren't convinced.

Channel 5 under fire over 'Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets?' documentary

Channel 5 is being criticised on social media today after it  emerged that the network is screening next Tuesday evening a documentary under the title 'Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets?'

Clearly, it's impossible to judge the programme until after it airs, but the title doesn't eexactly fill us with hope that it will be sympathetic to people on bikes.

We'll have more on this shortly but in the meantime, this tweet is one of manyy outlining concerns about the show on Twitter.

Peta Cavendish defends husband against critics on social media

She also took time to respond to some fans, including the poor chap below, and judging by the comments being retweeted is also frustrated with the way Dimension Data handled the selection process.

Cavendish says he's heartbroken at being left out of Dimension Data's Tour de France team, but will support teammates nonetheless

30-time Tour de France stage winner Cavendish is the most high-profile omission from this year's race, and this will be the first year since 2006 he hasn't started. In a thoughtful Twitter thread, Cavendish praised his team's charity efforts with Qhubeka but explained that it hurts all the more because he believed he was approaching peak form:

"I’m absolutely heart-broken by the decision that means I won’t be Le Tour this year. As I have done for my entire career, I targeted a specific time to be at peak form. This has pretty much always resulted in me hitting my goals or coming damn close.

"Predominantly at the most beautiful, special race that is Le Tour de France, where 30 of these victories have defined my career. After a long, difficult fight back from trying to compete for the whole of last season with Epstein Barr Virus and after following a specific training program to peak in July, I feel I was in the perfect place. Nevertheless, I truly came to (Team Dimension Data) with the purpose of making a difference, by mobilising entire communities in Africa with bicycles through our incredible charity Quebuka.

"Though I won’t be there, as always I’ll be supporting my teammates with all I have, wishing them safety and success in France and hoping we can get even more children on bicycles. Thank you all for your support."

Clearly a popular face at the Tour, hundreds have commented that Cavendish will be missed this year, including Koen de Kort of Trek-Segafredo and Joanna Rowsell Shand.

03/07/2019, 08:50

Last year's Le Tour hero Lawson Craddock left out of EF Education First team

Craddock fractured his scapula on stage 1 of last year's Tour de France, but battled terrible pain to finish the tour and unusually becoming the first rider to complete every single stage in last place (he also raised huged amounts for charity for his efforts).

Unfortunately his heroic efforts in 2018 weren't enough to earn him a place on the team this year, and there was also no call-up for Taylor Phinney. We heard a few rumblings that perhaps Lachlan Morton's huge victory at the GBDURO last week was simply a very very hard training ride ahead of the tour, but it appears that wasn't to be with Morton also not making the roster. Probably for the best...

Channel 5 documentary next week asks if cyclists are “Scourge Of The Streets”

$

Next week, Channel 5 is screening a documentary called Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets? and if the advance publicity is anything to go by, describing it as a look at a so-called “war of the wheels,” it’s unlikely to be sympathetic to people on bicycles as well as being far from the first programme to examine a perceived “us versus them” mentality between those using different forms of transport to get around.

The broadcaster has commissioned the documentary from Firecracker Films, whose past productions include Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, Mums Make Porn and The Sex Clinic, according to C21media.net.

The website says: “With increasing numbers of people in the UK choosing to cycle rather than drive, tensions between cyclists and motorists are on the rise.

“The producers say the doc will ask whether all cyclists are rule-breakers and road-hoggers, not adhering to the same laws as everyone else, or if motorists have just as much to answer for.”

Realscreen.com provides a bit more detail, saying that the documentary “will provide an unfiltered look at the enduring war between cyclists and motorists in England.

“The film will meet a variety of characters, from the cabbies of London and the residents of Surrey who no longer feel safe driving on local roads, to the cyclists patrolling the UK’s highways and law enforcement officials attempting to make the roadways a safer place for everyone who uses them.”

Executive producer Elspeth O’Hare of Firecracker Scotland, quoted on Realscreen.com, said: “This documentary promises to be an eye-opener for drivers and cyclists across the country,” said Firecracker Scotland’s O’Hare in a statement.

Of course, it’s impossible to judge the programme until after it airs next Tuesday evening, and it could be that it will be a well-balanced piece of reporting that highlights the dangers cyclists face on a daily basis from other road users.

More likely, we fear, is that it will help reinforce misconceptions held by many motorists about cyclists and how the law applies to them, as well as continuing the tribal narrative seen in past programmes such as the 2012 BBC documentary, The War On Britain’s Roads.

> Truth the first casualty in BBC's War on Britain's Roads?

In its listing for the programme, which will be broadcast at 9.15pm next Tuesday 9 July, Channel 5 says simply: “There is growing tension between two wheels and four.”

The documentary is already receiving criticism on Twitter due to its title, with this tweet attracting more than 100 retweets and 400 likes on the social network.

Tour de France team presentation: Richie Porte not best pleased at being asked if it;s "now or never", Geraint Thomas says we should know who's going to win by the end of week two

tour de france ineos team pres.JPG

A fairly uneventful Team Presentation took place in the Grand Place this evening, with arguably the most controversial moment coming during Richie Porte's mini-interview on stage - the compere put it to Porte: another Australian won the Tour when he was 35, you're 34, is it now or never?"

As well as pointing out that Evans was in fact also 34 when he won in 2011, Porte didn't seem best pleased about his age being scrutinised: "I don't really know what to say to that. Maybe best I just say nothing."

Later on Team Ineos took to the stage, with Geraint Thomas saying that he thinks we'll have a "pretty good idea" of who will take the GC by the end of the second week.

Bostik TdF

The Tour de France news you've been waiting for

Bike manufacturers have been working on bikes. Riders on their fitness. And, erm, Bostik on sticky numbers. We think.

"Bostik has developed a hot melt adhesive solution (or hot melt glue) sprayed on the back of the bibs", it gushes. "Its formulation, based on industrial technologies and with an accurate dosing of 60 grams, has been tested in its laboratories to assess its adhesion rate and flexibility in extreme conditions (wind and rain resistance, perspiration ...). Solvent-free formulated and made up with 10% of bio-sourced materials derived from pine resin, the company is also committed to act as a responsible industrial company"

"The result is an amazing simplicity: adhesive bibs that are easy to apply on the jerseys by pressing strongly and slowly on the palm of the hand. They provide both more comfort and lightness for optimal performance while being able to be removed without damaging the shirt and without leaving marks."

We're assuming it's talking about the self-adhesive bib numbers, rather than bib shorts. It doesn't actually say so in the press release, ever. Unless self-adhesive bib shorts are a thing now, and no-one told us.

Meanwhile, we managed to take a closer look at Geraint Thomas' Dogma F12 and were intrigued to spot a prototype 38t inner chainring. With an 11-30t cassette and 53t big ring this will presumably give a slightly better spread for hilly stages without resorting to grinding on steep inclines.

Velo north logo

Vélo North cancelled

The closed-road Vélo North sportive, which has caused some controversy (as usual, with closed-road events) has been cancelled two months out from its inaugural run, which was due to take place on 1 September.

On the event website the organisers say that "Despite our best efforts, we were unable to attract sufficient riders to justify the event going ahead. We apologise to everyone who had signed up and was looking forward to taking part – we hope you understand our reasoning and appreciate that this was not a decision we took lightly."

The email to entrants paints it slightly differently: "Despite our best efforts, we were unable to attract sufficient riders to justify the level of disruption the event would have had on residents, businesses and communities throughout the region as a result of the road closures."

More on this one soon...

Renshaw to Retire

Mark Cavendish's lead-out man Mark Renshaw is set to retire at the end of this season.

The Australian sprinter formed an unstoppable partnership with Cavendish at HTC Highroad, helping the British sprinter to the majority of his 30 Tour de France stage victories.

Renshaw briefly joined Blanco Pro Cycling to try for his own victories but returned to lead-out man duties with Etixx Quick-Step before moving to Dimension Data with Cavendish.

Our favourite moment that the pair produced was this fabulous victory on the Champ Elysees back in 2009.

Peter Sagan trains so hard he drops his team mates

On our way to another team hotel, we spotted none other than Peter Sagan himself out training on his time trial bike one last time before the Tour de France Grand Depart tomorrow. Sagan was chugging along at one hell of a pace in front of a gang of Astana riders, and shortly afterwards the rest of his own team arrived with Peter nowhere to be seen. Save something for the race son!

05/07/2019, 18:59

Let the madness begin ...

The 106th Tour de France starts in Brussels tomorrow. Here's our previews of the opening three stages.

Stage 1

Saturday 6 July

Brussels – Brussels (192 km)

The opening stage features two climbs that over the years have so often proved decisive in the Tour of Flanders, the Muur van Geraardsbergen and the Bosberg, but today they feature early on rather than in the final. Nevertheless, it will as always be a nervous start for the peloton, and we can expect a lot of jostling for position ahead of both ascents as riders try and keep themselves out of trouble.

On the way back into Belgium’s capital, the race passes the battlefield of Waterloo, as well the suburb of Wouluwe-Saint-Pierre, the childhood home of Eddy Merckx, who spent more days in yellow than anyone else in Tour de France history. The peloton will be going full gas to reel in the day’s break ahead of what looks set to be a bunch sprint finish in the city’s Royal Park.

TdF 2019 Stage 01 profile.jpg
TdF 2019 Stage 01 map.jpg

Stage 2

Sunday 7 July

Brussels – Brussels (TTT) (27.6 km)

A change in the race lead is highly possible today, and even this early, time gaps between teams with overall ambitions may have an impact later on – but last year’s team time trial in Cholet saw just 11 seconds separating the fastest five teams, with the now-defunct BMC taking the win.

Today’s stage starts at the Palais-Royale in the Belgian capital and finishes outside its most emblematic building – the Atomium, built in 1958. Whoever is in the overall lead today will be sporting the iconic structure on the yellow jersey, with the one awarded after each stage each marking people and places in the race’s history.

TdF 2019 Stage 02 profile.jpg
TdF 2019 Stage 02 map.jpg

Stage 3

Monday 8 July

Binche – Epernay (215 km)

Another stage with a Spring Classics flavour – today, the Ardennes, with four punchy climbs within the final 40 kilometres as the race heads into France. It’s not going to end in a bunch sprint, for sure. There’s a time bonus available on one of those, 15 seconds from the line – remember Geraint Thomas banking some of those last year on his way to victory?

There’s also a 15 per cent slope approaching the line. One for Julian Alaphilippe … or a final Tour de France stage for Alejandro in the rainbow jersey? The Champagne for the stage winner should go down particularly well tonight – Epernay is at the epicentre of the wine-growing region.

The mechanics told us Sunweb's bikes for the Tour were also specially painted in the UK with a much thinner and more delicate paint than the standard P5 to save some weight. We also spied this very neatly integrated Elite TT bottle and cage, different to the Chrono CX bottle set that joe public can buy.

All it takes is an inch...

Mike Teunissen won a dramatic, surprising and powerful sprint to take the yellow jersey, and his biggest career win to date.

The Jumbo Visma rider was the lead out man for Dylan Groenewegen but when his leader crashed he made the decision to push on and go for the victory himself.

He has previously finished 2nd at Dwars Door Vlaanderen and 7th at Paris-Roubaix but this victory will be something else for the 26-year-old Dutch rider.

Michael Matthews (Sunweb) found himself on the front with around 250m to go and was forced to make his effort.

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) sprinted off his wheel with Sonny Cobrelli (Bahrain-Merida) and Teunissen in pursuit.

In the end Teunissen had the strength to come around Sagan just as the Bora-Hansgrohe rider was beginning to fade.

Indeed Ned Boulting and David Millar were so shocked they intially thought it was Teunissens team mate Wout Van Aert who had won the stage. It was only once the photo finish had been confirmed that they realised it was the lesser known rider that had taken the opening stage of the 2019 Tour de France in a brilliant, opportunistic dash for the line.

Geraint Thomas fine to continue despite a classic "'G' tumble"

Rumours were swirling after iGeraint Thomas took a tumble in the aftermath of Dylan Groenewegen's crash with 1.4km to go.

Although it looked fairly innocuous in the initial footage, until it was confirmed that Thomas was back on the bus safe and sound, fears of possible injuries sustained were circulating.

His former team mate and good friend Peter Kennaugh seemed to realise everything was fine straight away as he called the crash "just a 'G' tumble".

And indeed the Ineos man has come out to reassure everyone that he was fine and he basically "toppled over" with his bike taking most of the damage.

Fulgsang crashes hard but manages to chase back on

And it wasn't just stage contenders affected by the usual nervousness and twitchy legs of the opening day, the GC contenders also hit the ground.

Jakob Fulgsang, riding for Astana, came down hard with 18km to go. At first he looked ok to continue with just superficial wounds. However, he hit his head hard at it appeared as though his glasses had smashed cutting his eyebrow.

With the team time trial tomorrow a big day for the GC boys, it will be interesting to see how Fulgsang recovers.

More details have come to light of the heartwarming gesture by Mark Cavendish who, learning that a young fan was upset that his favourite rider hadn’t been selected for the Tour de France by his Dimension Data team, travelled to Nottinghamshire to go for a ride with him (scroll down for our earlier story).

Mark Cavendish and Evan llewellyn.JPG

Five-year-old Evan Llewellyn’s mother Louise had tweeted her son’s response to Cavendish not being included in the squad, quoting her son as saying: “It’s ok Cav because I still want to ride my bike with you.”

Cavendish and his wife Peta subsequently travelled to Nottinghamshire, where the former world champion went for a ride with the little lad, both of them sporting Dimension Data kit.

Louise said: “Mark said it broke his heart to see Evan so upset. They rode round our village chatting away, Evan took Mark past his school and told him all about how he rides his bike!”

She added: “It was lovely to see them both smiling and enjoying their ride.

“We don’t know how to thank them both, memories from yesterday will stay with Evan forever.”

Evan and his family have also been invited by Tour de France organisers ASO to the Official Tour de France Fan Park in the Chilterns on Sunday 14 July – Bastille Day, no less – which coincides with the official sportive, L’Etape UK, and where the youngster will get the chance to meet Team Ineos riders Chris Lawless and Owain Doull.

Bradley Wiggins gives us the history behind some of Eddy Merckx Yellow Jersey's

Brad Wiggins is a stylish man, mostly, and his love for cycling's aesthetic history is well known.

Here, he talks us through some of Eddy Merckx yellow jerseys, giving a little bit of insight into what it takes to win the most coveted prize in cycling.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Eddy Merckx’s first Grand Tour win.

Up until the end of his career, this dedicated and talented cyclist, nicknamed “le Cannibale”, brought home countless victories, riding in all weather conditions and on all terrains.

Merckx rode in the Tour de France seven times, achieving 5 wins and 34 stage wins. In 1969, he wore the Yellow Jersey for the very first time in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, right near his family’s grocery store.

This year the race will ride past the cycling icon's house twice as they enjoy a summer start in the Flanders region.

Team Ineos confirms use of two wheel brands at Tour de France

We've just this minute had a reply from Team Ineos about our spotting of Lightweight wheels on some bikes a couple of days before the Tour de France Grand Depart.

"We can confirm we will use wheels from two brands during this year’s Tour. Shimano remains our main supplier and they are a valued partner for Team INEOS."

So there we go, Team Ineos will likely be using the Lightweight wheels in the big mountain stages and the regular Shimano Dura-Ace C60 wheels for all other stages.

06/07/2019, 11:55

Did Team Ineos buy their new Lightweight wheels?

Interesting...

06/07/2019, 11:30

Spotted: Team Ineos on Lightweight wheels

While snooping around the team trucks in Brussels before the Tour de France got underway, we spotted a few Team Ineos riders on very expensive Lightweight wheels.

The team normally rides Shimano Dura-Ace wheels but we're speculating that the tough mountain stages of this year's race have led the team to make some special equipment changes to provide a marginal gain.

team ineos riding2.JPG

Lightweight is a German company famous for making extremely light all-carbon wheels with a price tag to match, we're talking £3-4 here folks, so not a cheap investment at all. We don't know what the deal is between Ineos and Lightweight if there even is one.

Thomas and Brailsford share final thoughts ahead of Grand Depart

Defending champion Geraint Thomas and Team Ineos supremo Sir Dave Brailsford have been sharing their final thoughts ahead of the Tour de France starting in Brussels today.

Here’s what they had to say at yesterday’s press conference.

Brailsford: "We’re still in the infancy of this exciting new partnership with Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be heading into this Tour with them.

"Here we are, starting this edition of the Tour de France as Team Ineos, it’s an amazing feeling really - and it would be remiss of me not to thank Jim and his team.

"We want to help pay them back over this race.

"We’ve got a great team this year - of course we lost Chris [Froome], which was a big disappointment.

"But we’ve got two great leaders and a team packed full of Tour experience, which is vitally important in this race.

"With the group of guys we’ve got here, you couldn’t want for a better team. It’s an extremely exciting time for us and we’re all really looking forward to the race getting underway now."

Geraint Thomas in yellow, Tour de France 2018 (picture courtesy Anne Martin).JPG

Thomas: "I feel in good shape. Of course the crash [at the Tour de Suisse] was a setback but I didn’t lose any training days and I’m feeling good on the eve of the race.

"There's no lasting damage at all. Obviously, it was disappointing to hit my head. That was the reason I couldn't carry on but I've still done some good training and I don't think it's affected me too much

"We’re excited heading into the race. It’s always a great occasion and we feel we’re ready for another strong three weeks.

"Myself and Egan [Bernal] are co-leaders and we’re excited about the challenge that lies ahead of us.

"Egan is an honest and good guy, and as long as we communicate well and are open with each other, like Froomey and I were last year, then it can work just as well. Obviously it will be a huge advantage to have two of us there in the final stages.

"I don't know about being favourite. That's for everyone else to talk about. I can't bet on the races anyway, so the odds don't really matter to me. I feel in a good place and I'm looking forward to the race, and I just want to get going now."

"I knew a bike ride would cheer us both up" - Cav takes young fan upset at his hero's Tour de France omission for a spin

Here’s a heartwarming story. A lot of people were upset when Mark Cavendish was omitted from Team Dimension Data’s Tour de France line-up earlier this week – but perhaps none more so than young fan Evan Llewellyn from Nottinghamshire whose mum Louise posted a picture of his reaction to Twitter, with the caption, “It’s okay Cav because I still want to ride my bike with you.”

What happened next is something the youngster will remember for the rest of his life. The former world champion and 30-time Tour de France stage winner took him up on his offer, with Louise posting pictures to Twitter of the pair out riding together.

"45 minutes of hatred" - Guardian journalist slams Channel 5 cycling documentary

When we heard last week that Channel 5 was airing a documentary tomorrow evening called Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets, we feared the worst – after all, advance publicity for the show said that it would examine a so-called “war of the wheels.” An article by Guardian journalist Peter Walker today, who has seen the programme in advance of its TV screening, confirms we were right to be apprehensive.

Walker doesn’t pull his punches in his assessment of the show, calling it “undoubtedly the worst, most scaremongering, inaccurate, downright irresponsible programme on cycling I’ve ever seen.”

He says it “is, in effect, 45 minutes of hatred, misinformation and outgrouping against people who just happen to sometimes use two wheels to get about.”

As we pointed out last week, it’s not the first time that a televised ‘documentary’ has tried to sensationalise the perceived conflict between road users on bikes and those in motor vehicles – the BBC’s 2012 programme, The War On Britain’s Roads, being perhaps the most well-known example.

According to Walker, though, this is even more unbalanced – “uniquely damaging,” as he puts it, with “the overall tone is shockingly hostile and provocative” and the only balance provided by PC Mark Hodson of West Midlands Police, who helped pioneer its award winning close pass initiative.

His wide-ranging criticism of the programme, made by Firecracker Films, falls under a number of headings.

Cyclists are portrayed as an outgroup, the narration of the documentary is “openly hostile and aggressive,” once again there is the reinforcement of the misconception of some kind of “war” between different road users, and too much of the show is given over to people “openly hostile” to cyclists – in particular, London cab drivers, as well as the self-styled ‘Mr Loophole’ lawyer Nick Freeman.

The latter, you may recall, went for a bike ride around London with so-called ‘cycling vigilante’ Dave Sherry – besides PC Hodson, the only person appearing in the documentary to put things from a cyclist’s perspective, and whom Walker says “seems almost as fervent a self-publicist and irritant as Freeman, often delighting in the furious reaction of motorists.”

The lack of balance also results in some myths about cycling going unchallenged (it’s possible, of course, that organisations representing cyclists may have been approached to contribute to the programme but, given past experience of such shows, declined to participate – we know of at least one campaigner who was approached but did not take part).

We’ll watch the programme ourselves tomorrow evening when it airs at 9.15pm and bring you our reaction – and more – on Wednesday.

Guardian journalist Pete Walker gets early preview of Channel 5's "Cyclists: Scourge of the streets?" documentary... and it's even worse than it sounds

The documentary has caused much controversy before even airing (on tomorrow night at 9:15pm if you really want to put yourself through it), and Guardian journalist Pete Walker has got an early preview. Walker goes as far as to say the documentary may put cyclists at risk: "On Wednesday morning, I’ll be a little bit more wary when I cycle into work. I’m always hugely careful, anyway – the trip involves sharing space with tonne-plus lumps of speeding metal – but this time I’ll be particularly on my guard. Why? Because Channel 5 are putting me, and others, at risk."

Walker quotes numerous false statements presented as fact in the program, such as the idea that Britain has gone 'bike mad' when in fact journeys made by bike in the UK are stuck on around 2%, and using the lack of helmet-wearing by cyclists as an indication that people who ride  bikes are more likely to flout laws; when in fact there is no law in the UK that says cyclists must wear helmets.

The program also features a man driving a 4x4 down narrow country lanes, bemoaning the capacity of Britain's roads and complaining that he is unable to overtake them on blind bends.

Numerous people are voicing their concerns on social media about riding the day after the documentary airs; although others are relieved that it's only on Channel 5...

Chris Boardman, the world and Olympic gold medal winning cyclist turned cycling campaigner, has said ahead of tonight's Channel 5 documentary that cyclist's aren't the "Scourge Of The Streets" - a reference to the programme's title - but members of people's families.

Boardman  who remains a policy advisor to British Cycling in addition to his principal role as Greater Manchester's cycling and walking commissioner, was speaking in a short film for the governing body ahead of the programme, which airs at 9.15 this evening.

Bailey was taken to hospital and kept overnight due to the extent of his injuries, but a family friend told road.cc that he is now recovering at home. He received a message of support from Sir Chris Hoy yesterday, and is determined to get back on the bike to complete the ride at a later date. Review: Channel 5's Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets?

$
0
0

Cyclists are “lawless,” “aggressive,” and “like a plague of” – wait, what? – “lotuses coming down the road … herds of them.” Those were phrases fired during the opening salvo of last night’s Channel 5 documentary Cyclists: Scourge Of The Streets? which was so one-sided it makes you wonder why they bothered with the question mark.

Besides being treated to the wit and wisdom of three of ‘London’s finest’ – that’s black cab drivers to you and I, who are apparently among the “many drivers in the capital” for whom “cyclists have become public enemy number one” – we were also told how the “adrenaline junkies infiltrating Box Hill” were destroying the “pastoral dream” of Surrey – including, apparently, by defecating in people’s front gardens.

The opinions masquerading as facts that were allowed to go unchallenged were too many to count. One taxi driver insisted that “they’re not obeying the law like every other road user” – despite a recent study finding that cyclists are less likely to break the law than drivers.

Various rules from the Highway Code were cited as a means, we imagine, of highlighting just which laws cyclists break – but when the programme briefly looked at West Midlands Police’s award winning operation close pass, there was no specific mention of rule 163, which sets out the space drivers must give cyclists when overtaking.

We had Nick ‘Mr Loophole’ Freeman – you know, the lawyer who gets celebrities off driving related charges, often due to a technicality – saying “a lot of cyclists behave in a very poor way,” with no apparent sense of irony as he performed a piece to camera while driving his convertible sports car in an urban area.

Former Surrey resident – the sheer number of cyclists forced him to move out of the county, and we’re guessing not to the Netherlands – Ian Huggins proudly pointed out that his petition against the area being turned into “an open air velodrome” had garnered more than 3,500 signatures; no mention that a counter-petition to Surrey County Council, instigated by a road.cc reader, no less, got even more.

Much was made of people cycling on the pavement – including a segment showing an apoplectic cabbie taking a cyclist to task for daring to gently move his bike to where he could park it – but no mention made of Home Office guidance, supported by senior police officers, for fines only to be issued where others were endangered by the rider’s actions.

Missing were the voices of reason such as Chris Boardman or Will Norman that one might expect to find in a programme seeking to strike balance rather than sensationalise an issue – we’re not sure if they or other campaigners were approached, but we’d be unsurprised if they were.

Instead, we got a lengthy focus on Dave Sherry, described as “Britain’s most hated cyclist,” who has made it his mission to get as many motorists as possible brought to account for breaking the law.

Sherry appeared in a segment of the programme that narrator Craig Kelly prefaced with the words, “But before all cyclists are burnt at the stake” – seriously, he actually said that – “there’s another side to this story.”

We were told Sherry was a member of “a whole army of self-appointed avengers” who use action cameras to catch drivers breaking the law. He’s by no means the only cyclist to record his rides, as our Near Miss of the Day feature attests, but he is almost certainly the most extreme example in terms of his determination to seek out and confront transgressors and instigate action against them.

And again, balance went out of the window; whereas the notion of cyclists breaking the law went unchallenged, motorists doing it was almost normalised, Sherry presented as some kind of self-appointed quasi police officer stopping motorists from going about their business.

The programme’s saving grace was the all too brief appearance of PC Mark Hodson of West Midlands Police, who – in a sharp observation of just how invisible cyclists can be on the roads – pointed out that even when riding a bike in uniform, with a hi-viz jacket with the word ‘Police’ on his back, many motorists didn’t see him.

Hodson’s appearance in fact jarred with the tone of the rest of the documentary; here was someone with an expert knowledge of road traffic law and who, through his work on West Midlands Police’s roads policing unit sees daily the harm that motorists can inflict, and the effect it has on victims and their families.

Pointing out that motorists are involved in “99 per cent of all fatal collisions,” he added that “cyclists don’t cause us the problems drivers do.”

A programme looking at law-abiding people on bikes, just trying to get from A to B safely whether for sport, fitness, leisure, commuting or going about their daily business would reflect the reality of Britain’s roads, rather than trying to depict a “war” that does not exist – but we doubt you’d get a commissioning editor to greenlight it.

“When I'm killed” – ex-pro Phil Gaimon’s powerful YouTube film about vulnerability of cyclists

Phil Gaimon – the former professional cyclist whose ‘Worst Retirement Ever’ series on social media has made him something of a cult hero – is back in the spotlight, but on a far more serious issue.

The 33-year-old former Cannondale Pro Cycling rider, who hung up his wheels at the end of the 2016 season, had a video prepped for a while about the dangers cyclists face on the roads.

Titled ‘Share This When I’m Killed by Someone Driving a Car’ he has decided to share it now following a rise in the number of cyclists killed in road traffic collisions in the US, and in New York City in particular.

Commenting on his decision to make the footage public now, Gaimon said: “I made this video a few months ago and was waiting for a good time to share it.

“I finally realized there won't be a good time. It's just going to hurt, but it has to go up.”

It’s a very powerful, and sobering, watch.

Horrific crash for Cofidis rider Pierre-Luc Périchon as he hits bollards and is sent over the handlebars

In this video captured by an on-bike camera belonging to his teammate Natnael Berhane, Périchon fails to see the warning sign held up by a marshal ahead of the bollard in the middle of the road... and is sent flying over the handlebars. Berhane was also knocked off, unable to avoid Périchon or his wayward bike.

Velon say no serious damage was done, and indeed both riders managed to continue and finish the stage. With Jakob Fulgsang coming off the worst from the numerous crashes we've had so far in the early stages of this year's Tour, we'll be hoping for an incident-free stage five, a 175km hilly jaunt from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges to Colmar. Less than an hour into the stage, a four-man breakaway has emerged featuring Tim Wellens and Simon Clarke, with a 1:40mins lead over the peloton at the time of writing...

Maurten release unbranded sponsor-friendly packaged products

MAURTEN_UNOFFICAL_01

So, you've turned up to your cat3 Tuesday night crit race, but your sponsor's energy product just isn't going to deliver you to the sprint finish in optimal condition. You can't be seen with a rival's better product, but you need those BC points. Oh, the conundrum! Maurten might just have the unbranded answer to your problems.

They've just released their Hydrogel drink in completely unbranded packaging, which they say will help pro athletes (and you) to subtly use their product without annoying any sponsors.

It reminds us of the time that Castelli sold a 'Pro Edition' of the Gabba, which came with a black Sharpie so that you could black out the logos.

Need to get your hands on some of this unofficial stash? Thankfully, you don't need to turn to the dark web, you can get them here.

Hop On - amazing self-riding bike. It's all done with mirrors

The BBC tries to explain how a bicycle stays upright - and road.cc's John Stevenson points out where they went wrong

With bikes in the news after Channel 5's portrayal of us cyclists as lawless killers, the BBC has gone after a bit of cycling-related website traffic with an article that asks the question 'How does a bike stay upright?'

Good question, you might say, and it is. But unfortunately the article doesn't get even close to answering it, and makes at least one serious error while failing to reach that destination.

After quite a lot of waffle about the gyroscopic effect of a spinning wheel, the piece concludes that this isn't actually what keeps a bike upright as it rolls along. It cites Dr Hugh Hunt from the University of Cambridge, as having built bikes with extra, contra-rotating wheels cancelling out the gyro effect of the wheels on the ground. Turns out they're still stable.

Rider skill, the article concludes, is what keeps a bike upright, which would be fine if it weren't for the fact that you can push a riderless bike off down a slope and above a certain speed it will keep going.

As well as failing to explain what keeps a moving bike upright, the Beeb repeats common misconception about wheels. It says: "when you sit on the bike, the axle pulls down on the rim and acts like an arch … you are, in effect, hanging off the rim of the wheel."

Except you're not. If that was how wheels worked, then the upper spokes in a loaded wheel would have higher tension than when not loaded. A few minutes with a spoke tensiometer reveals that they don't change, but in fact the tension in the lower spokes reduces.

This matters because it implies something important about building wheels: high tension is good. If the tension in a spoke drops to zero, the nipple is free to turn, allowing the wheel to go out of true. If several spokes end up with zero tension, the wheel can collapse because the spokes are no longer holding the rim in place.

A good wheelbuilder therefore builds with as much spoke tension as the rim can take, and well-designed rims have sturdy spoke beds to take the load from the nipples. If spokes increased in tension when a wheel's loaded none of this would matter, but observation confirms that under-tensioned wheels quickly develop problems and high-tension wheels don't.

Strava vs Relive continued

Strava logo 2016.png

With both sides blaming the other, Strava have made a new statement in response to Relive's, standing by their view that Relive broke API terms by using the data of Strava members. Here's the statement in full:

"We have strict standards for how our API partners utilise our member data. We deeply respect the trust of our member community and expect our partners to do the same.

"Relive’s current use of Strava member data violates our API agreement and we have ended its integration with Strava. We are disappointed that Relive was unwilling to make the changes necessary to comply with the agreement.”

Strava vs Relive - Strava users no longer able to share Relive 3D videos of their uploads on the platform due to 'violation of terms'

If you're on Strava's mailing list, you may have noticed an email last night announcing that they will no longer be working with the 3D video sharing platform Relive: "The current version of Relive violates several of the terms that we ask of our API partners.

"We've worked hard with Relive to try to fix this, but they have ultimately chosen not to make the changes needed to honour the agreement. So as of today, Strava will no longer send your activities to Relive for playback."

Relive have responded with a statement this morning, claiming that Strava weren't happy about new social features that are included on the latest release of the Relive app:

"We thought we had a thing. Until last week. After launching our first social features, we received a very unexpected message threatening to pull the plug. Given our long-term partnership, we immediately rolled back the changes like they requested.

We then tried to call, email, and talk this out with Strava. No response, except for new ultimatums and threats about our existing features they’ve applauded for years. It’s sad to see them suddenly go and we’re bummed about this, just like you. We like Strava’s product and we’ve been working with them for more than 3 years.

Nothing has changed about how Relive uses and protects your data or how we use their API. We’re working to make sure you can keep your current and past activities on Relive. We believe this is your data and you should decide how it's used. After all, it’s your legs doing all the work!"

For any Relive users who currently use the app via Strava, you will now have to share the activities by connecting it using compatible Garmin, Suunto or Polar devices instead.

Do Strava think Relive are getting too big for their boots by trying to roll out additional features that may jeopardise their status as the biggest social platform for athletes; or does this mean Strava may introduce a Relive-type feature of their own in the future? We've asked Strava for comment.

Huge doping probe by Europol results in 234 arrests and 3.8 million substances seized

Syringe

A big investigation by Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, has led to a huge seizure of doping substances and led to 234 arrests, according to their press release. In all the bust shut down 17 organised groups, stopped operation at nine underground labs and seized 3.8 million doping substances and counterfeit medicines. Mario Thevis, head of Europol's doping analysis lab in Cologne, said: “We learn from the case that obviously there is a big market. Only if there is a large market will imports and structures of this kind be built.“

It follows on from Operation Aderlass, when a number of pro cyclists and cross country skiers were caught in raids across Germany and Austria. No names in cycling have been implicated yet, but we'll update if there are further developments.

Sir Dave Brailsford plays down rumours that he's set to step down as Ineos cycling team manager to take on wider role for the company

Sir Dave Brailsford (BBC via iPlayer).jpg

Ineos CEO Jim Radcliffe is known to be an admirer of his new cycling team's general manager, and it was reported yesterday evening in the Telegraph that Brailsford could be set for a new role that would see him oversee all of Ineos' sporting interests - which is growing at an alarming rate, having just purchased French League 1 football club Nice.

However, the Guardian reports that Brailsford was dismissive of the rumours when speaking to press before yesterday's Tour de France stage, saying he doesn't want to leave cycling completely: “You are constantly looking for things to challenge you and push you on. I don’t want to leave cycling, I love it too much, but equally I think this could be quite a challenge and it feels really invigorating."

Brailsford is already set to be involved in Eliud Kipchoge's second attempt to break two hours in the marathon , which is being organised by Ineos and will take place in Austria this October - do you think Brailsford will be tempted by a new challenge, and would the team be as successful without him?
