Pope Francis says road cycling shows value of teamwork – but warns about sport’s dark side

$

Pope Francis says that road cycling  provides an example of the value of teamwork – but has warned that the pursuit of “prestige and profit” can lead riders astray.

The Pontiff was speaking at the Vatican yesterday to officials from the European Cycling Union (UEC) and the African Cycling Federation, with both the regional governing body’s holding meetings in the Eternal City today, reports Carlton Reid on Forbes.com.

He said that cycling is “one of the sports that places emphasis on patience in effort, on long and difficult climbs; courage, in trying to breakaway or making a sprint; integrity, in respecting the rules; altruism and team spirit.”

Speaking of how it exemplified teamwork, he continued: “If we consider road cycling we can see how the whole team works together during the races: the support riders, the sprinters, the climbers.

“They often have to sacrifice themselves for the leader, and when a teammate experiences difficulty it is the other teammates who show support and accompaniment.

“In life too, it is necessary to cultivate a spirit of selflessness, generosity and community in order to help those who have fallen behind and who need help to achieve a certain goal.”

Warming to his subject, he continued: “Many cyclists have been examples, in sport and in life, for their integrity and consistency, giving of their best in cycling.

“In their careers they have known how to combine strength of mind and determination to achieve victory, but also solidarity and joy of living in bearing witness to having discovered the potential of the human being, created in the image and likeness of God, and the beauty of living in communion with others and with creation.”

But he cautioned that the single-minded pursuit of success all too often came at a price of sacrificing morals, warning that when “sport becomes an end in itself, and the person an instrument at the service of other interests such as prestige and profit, then distortions appear that taint it.

“I am thinking of doping, dishonesty, disrespect for oneself and one’s opponents, and corruption.”

The two organisations gave the Pope a white city bike, not the first time he has been gifted a bicycle.

Last year, three-time world champion Peter Sagan presented Pope Francis with a Specialized road bike, and five years ago four women undertook an 800-kilometre charity ride from Monza to Rome to present him with a new electric bike, which was promptly auctioned for charity.

Made by Atala, it was the second e-bike he was given that year, with Daimler having gifted one to him several months earlier.

In 2013, the year in which he was elected Pope, he said told novice nuns and trainee priests that if they needed a car to get around, to choose a humble model, not an ostentatious one.

“I’m telling you, truly, it hurts me when I see a priest or a sister with a brand new car. But you can’t, you can’t!” he said.

“Now, you’re thinking, ‘but then, father, must we go by bike?’” he said.  “Bikes are nice. Monsignor Alfred [his private secretary] goes by bike, he does it.”

Bristol teen who had bike stolen in Australia set to complete record-breaking round-the-world ride

A Bristol teenager whose bike was stolen when he was in Australia is reportedly on course new record for being the youngest person to cycle around the world solo and unassisted.

Charlie Condell, aged 18, decided to use his gap year to circumnavigate the globe on two wheels, setting off on 6 July last year.

The Guardian reports that he was due to return to his starting point – Bristol’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge – today after visiting 20 countries on his 18,000-mile journey.

“I’ve loved so many different aspects of this trip,” the Guardian reports him as saying. “From the beautiful mountains to the pristine beaches, the people, the culture and the food. I’ve loved growing as a person.”

He was 103 days into his journey when he discovered that his bike, camping equipment, passport and other kit had been stolen in Townsville, Queensland, but vowed to carry on and with the theft making headlines around the world was able to source a new bike and other gear.

Reflecting on his ride, he said: “I think that there are a few reasons why people cycle, There are certain special things that everyone can share in common. That ranges from reaching a summit, to simply just pushing a big gear down a piece of perfect road.

“When you can find one of these moments, with the perfect scenery, and bliss everywhere, that’s when one feels truly special. It reminds us why we first rode – not for the KOMs or any of that stuff, just simply for the pleasure of riding your bike.”

A different kind of near-dooring - cyclist almost hit as lorry driver opens trailer

We've featured near-doorings in our Near Miss of the Day series before, but here's an unusual one, involving a lorry driver opening his trailer.

The footage was recorded by road.cc reader Bob, who said: "This looks quite innocent until you think what would have happened had I not given that lorry a wide berth, luckily nothing was coming the other way or I might not be here to tell the tale.

"Also the lorry is parked on double yellow lines and the pavement. No wonder our pavements are a mess."

Dave Brailsford smashes the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, averaging almost 21mph over the bumpy 138km ride

While most of his top pro riders are in the thick of Paris-Nice, Team Sky's head honcho took to the white gravel in Tuscany, competing in the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche that took place the day after Julian Alaphilippe of Quick-Step won the pro race. It was another mightily impressive ride from Brailsford, who posted the evidence to Strava - according to Strava's power estimates (make of that what you will) he put out an average of 280 watts and rode at just under 21mph to complete the course in a little over four hours... that's with a puncture 9km out from the finish. He'll have no option but to sign himself up on the team at this rate!

Even after winning the race he still had enough energy to attempt some front wheel stoppies on his way back to the team bus, whilst being chased by fans wanting a selfie!

Popular climb in Lanzarote closed to cyclists... because of too many cyclists

Tourists who visit the Canarian island for the epic cycling rather than the Irish bars and discount cigarettes have recently been disappointed to find that one of the most famous climbs has been closed to cyclists for the forseeable... because of too many cyclists. According to Spanish news website Lancelot Digital the narrow climb up Femés mountain meant that tailbacks of cars were being formed due to high numbers of cyclists ascending and descending it. The report says some locals have complained the road is particularly dangerous, although according to our sources on the island many are still riding the climb anyway. Translating the comments in the Lancelot Digital article reveals some familiar anti-cyclist sentiment, although refreshingly a majority call for widening of the roads and better cycle tracks "because the islanders should be thinking more carefully about the kind of clientele they want to attract to Lanzarote" says one...

Anthony Joshua’s new custom FiftyOne road bike

FiftyOne, the Irish bike brand known for their stunning custom carbon road bikes, has just released details of its latest creation for heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua.

Joshua does a lot of cycling as part of his fitness regime - he brought London to a standstill last year when he was spotted our cycling - and FiftyOne has built a custom carbon frame for the 6’5” boxer.

"It's important to do the bike. I say that because you've still got your cardio-based training, but it takes the pressure off your joints so don't get any wear and tear," explained Joshua in an interview on his training regime.

fifty one anthony joshua1

We can imagine a lot of reinforcing and extra layers of carbon have been used to ensure the frame doesn’t flex and twist under his immense power!

It has been hand painted with a design based around a Lions head on the head tube and Joshua’s 25/7 slogan, a nod to his relentless work ethic, and also his Second to No One (2-2-0-1) symbol.

A brand new SRAM Red eTap AXS 12-speed groupset adorns the frame along with Zipp 303 wheels.

Anthony Joshua will defend his heavyweight title and his unbeaten 22 winning streak on June 1st in Madison Square Garden.

FiftyOne bikes will proudly display Joshua’s bike at the upcoming North American Handbuilt Show in Sacramento. The show runs from March 15-17th

Crosswinds impact dramatic Paris-Nice stage

Strong winds played a pivotal part in shaping the outcome of the second stage of the Paris-Nice stage race, with Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen taking the victory while Mark Cavendish abandoned and Rigoberto Uran crashed out with a broken collarbone.

It was an exciting stage and well worth watching the highlights video below. Today is another similarly flat stage for the sprinters and it should be exposed to the wind again, so could be a nervous day for the peloton but exciting for the spectators.

Cyclist uses bike to save teenager being mauled in Rottweiler attack in South Africa

$

A cyclist in South Africa has spoken of how he used his bicycle to fend off a pair of Rottweiler dogs that were mauling a 13-year-old boy, saying afterwards, “If I had been a minute later, he might have been killed.”

Angelo Vangelis Eleftheriou, aged 65, was out for a Sunday afternoon bike ride from his home in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, reports News24.com.

The website says that 13-year-old Lethokuhle Mabasa was returning home from the shops with friends when two Rottweilers jumped a fence and attacked him.

One of the dogs reportedly had gripped the youngster by the ankle and was dragging him into bushes when Mr Eleftheriou came across the incident on his bike.

“I have lived in Howick for 34 years and I have been cycling for 15 years,” he said.

“In all my years in town, I had never cycled that route before. But that afternoon, I just decided to cycle down Prospect Road.

“I saw three young guys and a small boy with two dogs. At a distance it looked like they were playing but as I got closer, I saw one of the dogs had latched on to the small boy’s hip.

“The dog pulled him down to the ground. I did not have anything on me except my bicycle so I started hitting the dogs with it to get them to let go of Lethokuhle.

“The other dog then went for Lethokuhle’s neck and I managed to get the bike between us and the dogs.

“I started calling for help, and one of the young guys brought a stick. He stood at a distance, hitting the dog, because he was nervous, but I told him to get closer.

“The dogs were trying to pull him into the bush and I was holding the bicycle and so was Lethokuhle. He was very brave.”

It took 15 minutes to get the dogs away from the teenager.

“When you see something like that happen, you don’t think,” Mr Eleftheriou continued.

“I just did what I did. After, I thought about it and knew that if I had not helped and the boy had died and I lived, it would replay in my head for the rest of my life.

“You either run away or jump into the fire. Lethokuhle was very brave and strong. He fought for his life.

“Once the dogs had gone he kept saying he was going to die and I told him he was not going to die because the two of us were together,” he added.

The incident has been reported to police and the dogs given up to a local animal protection charity.

Urban transport expert says dockless bike share “a joke”

An urban transport expert has said that dockless bike share schemes are “a joke.”

Park Byung Joon, an associate professor at the Singapore University of Social Science, was speaking following the announcement that China’s Mobike was pulling out of the country.

Domestic operator oBike went out of business last year, while Ofo – which recently closed its UK operation – could lose its licence in Singapore if it fails to clear its bikes from public spaces by today.

Professor Park said: "If you look at bicycle-sharing, no one is making any money anywhere in the world.

“From a business point of view, this is a joke. They really don't have any viable business plan. The good times are over. Now we have to pay."

What happens when you pitch a bloke on a folding bike against a car, a bus and a train in one of the most congested commutes in Europe? The bike wins, of course. snowdon paradox

Snowdon Paradox flat bar titanium road bike now available in complete build

British titanium flat bar specialist Snowdon is now offering its Paradox as a complete bike, costing from £3,999 with either Shimano Ultegra or SRAM Force groupsets. Alternatively, you can still buy a frameset for £1,999.

There’s a small running change to the frame since we tested it, tyre clearance has been increased, up to 32mm on the road bike and 40mm on the gravel bike, or 50mm if used with 650b wheels.

It’s also now offering a women’s bike but like the latest trend with big bike brands, the geometry is identical to the men’s bike and it’s the key touch points that are changed. The company says it has gotten a lot of interest from women looking for an “elite bike but do not want drop handebars”.

You can read our review of the Paradox here.

Check out Toms Skujiņš Trek Emonda from Strade Bianche

Low weight and wide gear range were the order of the day for Toms Skujiņš  at last weekend's Strade Bianche.

At the opening classics weekend, the Latvian Trek-Segafredo rider was using a Trek Emonda with a 1x version of SRAM’s brand new Red eTap AXS groupset. But at Strade Bianche last weekend he instead opted for a rather more conventional 2x setup, though the SRAM groupset is anything but conventional.

The 12-speed groupset he raced comprised a 50/37t chainset coupled to a 10-28t cassette. We don’t know the reason for his decision to switch but we’re guessing it’s likely down to the sheer amount of climbing and very steep climbs that make the Strade Bianche course as tough as it is beautiful.

He was on Trek’s Emonda, opting for low weight over the aerodynamics of the Madone, to give him every advantage on the climbs. He was rolling on 28mm tyres, wider than the 25mm he would regularly run and providing a bit more cushioning and traction on the loose dusty surface of the iconic white roads.

Claimed weight for the bike was bang on the UCI’s 6.8kg weight limit. There was a nod to aero with the Bontrager XXX Carbon Aero handlebar.

Building of Cardiff's first separate cycleway on Senghennydd Road to begin on 18th March

As part of the council's "commitment to improving cycling infrastructure", the Welsh capital will follow London by phasing in segregated cycleways, starting next week on Senghennydd Road. This is the first of five proposed routes, and if approved there could eventually be 13km of cycle routes in the city. The routes would be:

St Andrew's Crescent through to Heath High Level
Dumfries Place to Broadway in Splott
Cardiff Bay to Smart Way
Sophia Gardens through to Llandaff Village
City Centre through to Ely Bridge

Each route will undergo a public consultation and feedback will be assessed and considered as part of the detailed design work prior to the route being built, say Cardiff Council. More details on their website here.

British Cycling pays tribute to Keith Butler

"Everybody at British Cycling was deeply saddened by the news of Keith Butler’s passing on the morning of Wednesday 13 March.

"As the first man to win both the amateur and professional national road race titles, team manager for the Great Britain Cycling Team at the 1986 UCI Road World Championships in Colorado and latterly as a member of the Board, Keith will forever sit among the pantheon of greats who pioneered the sport on these shores and laid the foundations for those who followed.

"He was also a longstanding member of the Road Commission and South East Regional Board, and one of the inaugural inductees in the British Cycling Hall of Fame in recognition of his lasting contribution to our sport.

"We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Keith for the tireless and unfailing contribution he made throughout his life, and his legacy lives on through the racing scene in Surrey and all of those who have been inspired and supported to ride through his endeavours.

"The thoughts of everybody, both at British Cycling and in the wider cycling community, are with Keith’s family and friends at this difficult time."

Cycling UK calls for tighter controls on all new drivers

Cycling UK has expressed its support for ‘Graduated Driver Licensing’ (GDL)– a system where conditions are imposed on novice drivers.

Young drivers are over-represented in reported collision and casualty statistics and the charity says that this is influenced by the current training and testing system’s strong focus on vehicle handling (which is not too much of a challenge for most young people); insufficient focus on hazard perception; and a failure to put enough emphasis on social responsibility and emotional control.

Cycling UK would like to see:

  • A minimum learning period of at least 12 months
  • An intermediate/probationary stage, which would prohibit driving at night and on motorways amongst other things
  • More widespread use of black boxes

Analysis carried out by IAM RoadSmart in partnership with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) last year found that young drivers quickly picked up skills needed to avoid single-vehicle crashes, but took longer to acquire those needed to avoid vulnerable road users.

The road safety charity said this was possibly because of poor hazard perception skills.

Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Sillars, said the results showed, “that in the formative years of driving, there is clearly a need for post-test training to continue, to build experience that can reduce the number of needless tragedies on our roads.”

Ti-Raleigh Team replica challenge tyres

Challenge advises against using its tyres with Enve SES wheels

Following yesterday’s shock announcement that the ISO 5775 and ETRTO guidelines governing rim and tyre dimensions are due to be updated this year after lengthy industry discussions, finally bringing about one universal tubeless standard, Challenge Tires has issued a safety bulletin advising against using its tyres with Enve SES carbon rims.

We don’t yet know the exact details of the new standards but Challenge reveals the update to the guidelines stipulates a minimum 0.7mm rounded radius on all hooked rims.

Challenge claims that Enve SES carbon rims do not comply with this updated standard, having “two sharp 0.2mm radii in their hooks that leave parallel cuts above the bead”. For this reason, Challenge does not recommend using its tyres on Enve rims.

Here’s the important bit from the press release:

Challenge has noted failures of its clincher tires, communicated by consumers and athletes, caused by the sharp edges on the ENVE SES hooks. This international design standard violation has been communicated back to the affected consumers, shops, endorsed teams, ENVE and their parent company, as Challenge has been made aware of problems. ENVE, however, continues to produce and promote usage of the said SES models, as part of their line.
Challenge has consequently been forced to list the specific ENVE SES rims as not compatible with any Challenge clincher tire models, on the website. Challenge asks that consumers do not mount ENVE SES wheels with any model of Challenge clincher tire whatsoever.
Failure to follow this warning could cause the ENVE SES wheel to cut Challenge’s quality casings resulting in explosive air loss from the tire and/or inner tube, potentially causing a crash and injury to the rider.

This bulletin also aims at providing the technical clarification, that only a precisely defined 622.0mm+-0.5mm bead seat diameter, specifically defined wall height and center channel, as described in the new above standards, will safely and easily allow proper tire and rim fit and function. Challenge has regularly been attending standards meetings and being involved for the past three years in confronting the market’s accelerated changes, such as the implementation of progressively wider rims, carbon fiber clinchers rims and tubeless and tubeless ready tire technologies. Challenge has invested time, knowledge and energy together with other elite bicycle industry companies to address and update tire & wheel fit issues with the ETRTO and ISO.

Challenge handmade tires have been produced for close to 20 years using the same handmade processes that have been proven over the past 50 years at the highest levels of racing without significant failures - if the rims and wheels comply with internationally accepted design standards. And this applies for both aluminum and carbon fiber rims.

Regarding carbon fiber rims, there had also been other periodic problems in the past with some carbon rims that had cut our (and other tire manufacturers’) tire casings just above the beads. These tire cuts were however normally caused by less than optimal QC at the factory, resulting in quality issues of improper finishing at the tire hook during production. Normally roughness at the hook was due to failure to completely remove resin flashings created while molding the rim. Proper finishing leaves the required 0.7mm min. radiused rim hook smooth, without roughness, thus eliminating a potential tire failure.

In the above cases, Challenge has routinely and successfully worked with the wheel suppliers (including ENVE) to fix the problems or replace these wheels to the consumer. However, specifically with ENVE’s SES model wheels, it is the first time that Challenge has known of a rim hook design that does not meet the above recognized design criteria, reason for which Challenge feels compelled to follow up with the release of this informative bulletin to protect its customers

Cyclist previewing time trial course killed after driver makes U-turn

19-year-old Team California rider Tate Meintjes was killed on Tuesday while recceing the Redlands Classic time trial course.

The race reports that a car made a U-turn in front of him while he was riding with team-mates.

In a statement, California Highway Patrol said Meintjes was riding west on Sand Canyon Road, behind a Honda Accord, just east of Crafton Avenue. “The Honda made a U-turn directly into the path of the cyclist and the cyclist crashed into the Honda.”

The president of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, Marc Shaw, said: “We are absolutely heartbroken by the tragic collision that occurred Tuesday. The cycling community is a very tight knit one, the loss of such a talented, young cyclist is being felt across all cycling disciplines.

“The race committee is working closely with our entire field of talented athletes and support staff to ensure they are receiving the assistance they need during this difficult time.”

Jess Varnish to appeal employment tribunal ruling

Back in January, Jess Varnish failed in her attempt to prove she was an employee of British Cycling and UK Sport. The judge concluded that her funding was more akin to a university grant.

The BBC reports that she is now challenging the ruling relating to British Cycling. A judge will decide whether the appeal can proceed.

Varnish's lawyer, Simon Fenton, said: "The appeal tribunal has been asked to overturn the original judgment and to decide that Ms Varnish was an employee."

Fenton will argue that the tribunal was wrong that the services and benefits Varnish received from British Cycling were not remuneration; and says the organisation "failed to explain how the work performed by a professional football player is different from the work performed by Jess for British Cycling".

London Cycle Hire Scheme Bikes On Docking Station (copyright Simon MacMichael).jpg

It's just like old times - Boris Johnson launches cycle hire scheme in London

Wait, what’s this just landed in the road.cc inbox? Boris Johnson launching a cycle hire scheme in London? So the last three years didn’t happen, and the political stalemate that leaves the United Kingdom’s population with no clue what our future holds just 11 days before we are due to leave the European Union was just some kind of dystopian nightmare?

Well, not quite. The former Mayor of London and ex-Foreign Secretary was acting in his capacity as Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip as he unveiled Brunel University’s bike hire scheme, made possible after students there emerged as joint winners, with Swansea University, of the Santander Cycles University Challenge.

The scheme, operated by Nextbike, will link the university with Uxbridge town centre and Hillingdon Hospital, with Brunel students, helped by ccontributions from alumni and local businesses, smashing a crowdfunding target of £48,650 to meet operating costs by £36,000 and Santander then chipping in a further £100,000 in capital expenditure.

Johnson said: “It’s wonderful, I think Brunel have been pioneering. It’s also a great thing for Uxbridge and the local community because what they are creating is not just a cycle scheme for the university but for the whole of the town centre. I’ve no doubt that it’ll expand and this is the start of something really beautiful.”

The capital's Santander Cycles - previously the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme (pictured above and named after the bank, not the Telegraph-owning twins from whom Johnson trousers three times his MP's salary for his weekly column) was launched while he was Mayor, although it was originally proposed by Liberal Democrat assembly member Caroline Pidgeon, with the green light given by his predecessor, Labour's Ken Livingstone.

Today, BBC Sport's Dan Roan tweeted that confirmation is expected within the next 48 hours, with a subsequent report on its website stating that from next year onwards, it will race as Team Ineos.

Man who cycled through Blackpool after drinking 18 cans of super strength lager and exposing himself is sentenced

The Blackpool Gazette reports that 44-year-old Craig Lomax of Oxford Road, Blackpool had drunk 18 cans of super strength lager before embarking on a bike ride through the town.

Lomax was lucky not to cause a serious accident after narrowly missing a collision with an electric disabled buggy. He eventually came to a stop by crashing into a large tree and a metal street post on Whitegate Drive, then as he staggered along the footpath Lomax removed his trousers and started exposing himself to passers-by. The previous day Lomax, who was said to have turned to alcohol due to family issues, also bared his buttocks at a passing car driver.

He was sentenced at Blackpool Magistrates court this morning, receiving a six week jail term suspended for a year. He was also ordered to complete twenty days rehabilitation, and was placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

Adam Yates misses out on Tirreno win by less than a second

Adam Yates has missed out on becoming the first British winner of Tirrreno-Adriatico by less than a second.

The Mitchelton-Scott rider, whose twin brother Simon won last year’s Vuelta, went into today’s closing individual time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto with a 25-second advantage over Jumbo-Visma’s Primoz Roglic.

The Slovenian former ski jumper, silver medallist in the time trial at the road world championships at Bergen in 2017, was widely tipped to overhaul the deficit today.

But he cut it fine, winning the week-long Italian race by just 0.31 of a second, with Yates finishing second overall and Astana’s Jakob Fuglsang half a minute back in third place.

Today’s stage was won by the Lotto-Soudal rider Victor Campenaerts the reigning European time trial champion.

Ineos Grangemouth petrochemical plant (licensed CC BY-SA 2.0 on Wikimedia Commons by Paul McIlroy)

“Planet wrecking” Ineos accused of “greenwashing” over Team Sky sponsorship

Ahead of today’s expected announcement that Ineos will sponsor Team Sky from next year, the petrochemicals business and its founder and controlling shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been accused of a “blatant attempt at greenwashing” by environmental campaigners.

At last year’s Tour de France, the team’s jerseys promoted the Sky Ocean Rescue campaign, which aims to clear plastic pollution from the seas, and when the broadcaster announced last December that it was ending its sponsorship after this season, one of the reasons given was that it wanted focus on that initiative.

In recent days as it has become clear that the Ineos deal is all but finalised, it hasn’t gone unnoticed on social media that the new sponsor, Britain’s biggest private company, is a major manufacturer of plastics.

Today, Tony Bosworth, fossil free campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said: “Taking over Team Sky is the latest blatant attempt at greenwashing by Ineos.

“It’s a harsh change of tone that may see Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign to clear plastic pollution from our oceans ditched from the team jersey in favour of Ineos – one of the biggest plastic producers in Europe.

"This is also a company that wants to frack large swathes of northern England and the East Midlands. Ineos has also been lobbying hard for the government to relax safety rules so fracking companies can trigger larger earthquakes before having to down tools,” he added.

“Cycling is one the UK’s most successful and popular sports, but do the likes of Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome really want to be associated with a planet-wrecking company like Ineos?”

Nasty Crash in Nokere Koerse Sprint Finish

Today's race in Belgium, that ends with an uphill cobbled sprint to the line ended with several riders hitting the cobbles hard.
Mathieu van der Poel looked to be in the worst state with concerned teammates staying with him before he was loaded into an ambulance. It wasn't the ideal start to his cobbled campaign, but thankfully initial reports suggest there are no broken bones.
The other riders that came down included Trek-Segafredo's Matteo Moschetti who has a badly pulled calf while Floris Gerts was taken away in a neck brace.

The fastest bike for an hour?

This is the bike of Victor Campenaerts who is taking on the hour record next month.

The Ridley track frame is paired with double Campagnolo Ghibli Pista wheels, Vittoria tyres and what looks to be a 3D printed cockpit.

The gear looks huge so it'll be interesting to see what setup he uses in the thin air at the Aguascalientes velodrome in Mexico. Campenaerts is currently on fine form having just won the TT at Tirreno-Adriatico.

The question is, can he beat the 54.526km set by Wiggins in 2015? Time will tell.

Video: Take a look at yesterday's people protected bike lane on London's Old Street

Yesterday, campaigners from Cycle Islington and Active Travel Now formed a people protected bike lane on London's Old Street calling for it to be made safer for cyclists - with Islington Council confirming only on Monday its plans to reduce the danger posed by motor vehicles, but work not beginning until 2021.

Our news editor Simon MacMichael went along yesterday and rode through the people protected bike lane, together with miniature schnauzer Elodie in the basket of their Elephant Bike - the sight of all that hi-vis making her a little bit excited, as you can hear.

And here's what it looked like from their point of view - thanks to Sean Howes of Cycle Islington for the action camera loan.

Toughest bike race in the World? Mike Cuming explains how he "obliged" after rider asked him to warm his hands during comfort break

It may not be the best-known race on the calendar but the Tour of Normandie certainly has some of the best stories from those tough enough to take it on.

Madison Genesis riders have been sharing their stories ahead of this year's edition of the race and without doubt, the highlight comes from Mike Cuming:

Millar says cycling would "return to the dark ages" if its biggest team ceased to exist, and congratulated them for scooping such a big sponsorship deal; however many commentators on social media can't get over the irony of the team being backed by a chemicals company, especially as Team Sky back the Ocean Rescue movement that advocates a reduction in plastic waste. World Naked Bike Ride coming to Ipswich for first time

The World Naked Bike Ride is coming to Ipswich for the first time in July this year.

Cyclists will join the ride, which aims to highlight the vulnerability of the human body as well as protesting against car and fossil fuel dependency, on Saturday 6 July.

Co-ordinator Robert Brown told the Ipswich Star: “It isn’t a race, it’s a gentle, leisurely ride around town.

“Our motto is ‘bare as you dare’ but we find once people get on the bike and start cycling naked they love it.”

Other places in the East of England to host similar rides include Clacton, Chelmsford, Colchester and Cambridge, where more than 200 people take part each year.

“Most people are supportive – you get the odd nasty comment but that is usually from someone who is narrow-minded,” Mr Brown added.

“We are not breaking the law or doing anything illegal and we have worked with the police, who helped us decide on a route around Ipswich.”

He added that the ride would take place whatever the weather.

“Once we have organised an event, nothing stops us,” he explained. “At one of the Chelmsford rides, it started to hail heavily and it started to sting, and we ended up having to take cover in a bus shelter.”

Commuter can be heard shouting "you nearly took out four people" to driver who attempts to cut traffic queue by driving on wrong side of the road

According to commenters under the video this has become a common problem in the area -  as traffic builds up heavily due to a pedestrian junction ahead, cars move into the other lane to attempt to cut the queue, and in this instance the culprit was apparently close to hitting four cyclists on the correct side of the road. Do you ride this road on your commute, and what do you think could/should be done to stop it from happening?

Anti-fracking campaigners say protests possible at Tour de Yorkshire and Road World Championships events due to Ineos sponsorship

Speaking to the BBC, Steve Mason of Frack Free United says there will almost certainly be protests over Ineos' involvement in cycling at the Tour de Yorkshire in May and the Road World Championships weekend in September. Ineos actually has permissions to explore for shale gas in the county, but work has yet to begin because of issues with planning permission.

On Tuesday's live blog we reported that Friends of the Earth campaigner Tony Bosworth says the Ineos deal with what is now known as Team Sky is an attempt at 'greenwashing' by the corporation: “Taking over Team Sky is the latest blatant attempt at greenwashing by Ineos. It’s a harsh change of tone that may see Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign to clear plastic pollution from our oceans ditched from the team jersey in favour of Ineos – one of the biggest plastic producers in Europe.

CHPT3 unveils Milan-Sanremo inspired collection

CHPT3 MSR clothing 2019 - 7

David Millar’s design house CHPT3 has collaborated with long-term partner Castelli to produce a collection of cycling kit inspired by Milan-Sanremo, just prior to this year's editions (it takes place tomorrow).

The MSR Jersey (£120) is made with a fabric previously exclusive to Castelli’s Maglia Rosa jersey, so it is a race weight, aerodynamic and high-wicking.

CHPT3 MSR clothing 2019 - 4

CHPT3 designers have softened the race jersey it is based on by including a touch of elastane and employing a less constrictive cut.

"The colours of the MSR Jersey reflect the muted, industrial portion of the race, inferring what’s to come with flashes of Mediterranean colour woven in," says CHPT3. "Meanwhile, the rear pockets show the chevrons of the Turchino Pass – the turning point in the race."

CHPT3 MSR clothing 2019 - 8

The MSR Base Layer (£70) is made from a lightweight mesh fabric originally chosen by Castelli to make a super-lightweight climber’s jersey for the Tour de France.

"MSR embodies so much of the madness inherent in our sport: a 300km race where everything happens in the final 30km," says David Millar. "Racers will always split races into sections. MSR is two halves, the tunnel of the Turchino Pass is the spiritual halfway point. The moment we exit the tunnel we descend to the coast and enter a brave new world – one where we’re more at home.

CHPT3 MSR clothing 2019 - 5

"With the MSR collection, we’ve taken this racing mindstate of compartmentalising everything and created a beautiful design, splitting the race up by the visual impression it leaves."

CHPT3 MSR clothing 2019 - 6

The MSR collection, which also includes a cycling cap (£25) and socks (£18), is available now from CHPT3.com and selected retailers.

Manchester to trial European-style zebra crossings at side roads

Another great slab of investment’s been announced in Manchester’s Beelines Network (more on that later). As well as a bunch of major construction projects, they’re going to trial European-style zebra crossings.

Transport for Greater Manchester has proposed an independent research project to investigate using European-style crossings at minor side road junctions to improve safety and enhance the experience for people travelling on foot or by bike.

Currently, zebra crossing-style markings are only permitted on UK roads where Belisha Beacons and zig zag markings are also in place and can cost around £30,000. If European-style crossings were to be permitted in the UK it would bring the cost per side road junction down to around £500.

Chris Boardman said: "The majority of European cities use zebra crossings at side roads to give a clear and simple message to drivers that they must give way to people travelling on foot. They are used in cities across the world and now we want to see if this approach can work in Greater Manchester.

"If it can, and with help from Department for Transport, it will enable us to quickly and cheaply ensure that people are much better protected on every-day journeys including trips to school, to the shops, to work."
