Thomas De Gendt bosses Volta a Catalunya opener and solos into 3-minute overall lead

Thomas De Gendt launched a solo attack from the break with 60 kilometres remaining of today’s opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya, covering 163 kilometres and starting and finishing in Calella – and the Lotto-Soudal rider now finds himself with a lead of almost three minutes on his rivals.

Among the big names the Belgian put time into today were Alejandro Valverde, fourth overall and 2 minutes 56 second down in fourth place overall, and Team Sky’s Egan Bernal, a further 1 second back.

Jason Kenny after winning the keirin at Rio 2016 (copyright Britishcycling.org_.uk).jpg

Jason Kenny recounts last month’s near miss on BBC TV

Jason Kenny has recounted to the BBC the near miss he and his infant son Albie encountered while out cycling last month.

As we reported at the time, the six-time Olympic champion tweeted that he had been on a Sunday bike ride with his son when they were “almost run over by a van driver who drove at us, then proceeded to angrily inform me it was my fault we nearly died.”

Eurosport reports that Kenny expanded on the incident on BBC One today, saying: “Someone felt they had right of way and decided that gave them the right to kind of jump on the throttle and drive at us, which was a scary experience.

“I’m a bit annoyed at myself because I lost my temper at the time. We had a heated debate about the incident and then the person drove away.

“I think there seems to be a bad feeling against cyclists and it’s really strange because they’re only people,” he continued.

“We met a young boy and young girl who recently lost their mum, and it’s really sad when you see that side of it. She got hit by a car and that’s someone’s mum, not just a cyclist. It is really sad when you see the consequences of that.

“This person has obviously just seen red, ‘I’ve got right of way, I’m going to go’, and you might have right of way technically – whether you do or don’t is often debatable – but it doesn’t give you the right to smash someone and potentially kill someone, which is what is going to happen if you run someone off their bike.

“I think it’s just taking a breath and think about the consequences,” he concluded.

Colnago to launch an e-bike?

What blasphemy is this? One of the world’s most iconic cycling brands appears set to launch an e-bike.

Colnago is using social media to tease the arrival of its new E64 Performance, which we’ll go out on a limb and guess is the company’s attempt to tap into the rapidly growing e-bike market.

e-bikes are very much the SUVs of the car world with every manufacturer seemingly keen to add at least one to their range to not miss out

We've asked Colnago for more details but they just shrugged their shoulders in reply.

Telegraph article suggests "Littering cyclists and joggers could be to blame for countryside rubbish problem"

The headline does anyway, while the sources in the article cover a few different potential causes. According to the Telegraph, cyclists and joggers could be targeted as part of a new Government initiative to work out who is leaving waste behind in countryside. It's garnering quite a few sarcastic responses on Twitter...

Green Party MP takes aim at new Team Sky owner over pollution

Last week, Friends of the Earth accused Ineos and its owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe of "greenwashing" after it was confirmed the petrochemicals firm was buying Team Sky's management company from Sky and 21st Century Fox with effect from 1 May.

Today, its Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion who is taking aim at the Brexit-backing billionaire, referencing Team Sky in a tweet that links to a Greenpeace article claiming that Ineos will close a plant in Middlesbrough if forced to comply with EU anti-pollution laws.

Once secretive, Ratcliffe's backing of teams in yachting and cycling and an attempt to buy Chelsea FC last year, as well as his status as Britain's richest man, have seen the raising of both his and the company's profiles.

Anti-fracking campaigners are reportedly planning to protest against Ineos when the team debuts under its name at May's Tour de Yorkshire - a shape of things to come once Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome and their team mates sport the company's logo on their jerseys?

Froome crashes and loses 14 minutes in Catalunya

Frome Catalunya Crash via Eurosport

With so many pinch points on today's stage, it was inevitable that there would be a few crashes but the hardest hit was Chris Froome who lost out on any potential GC hopes after a nasty crash inside the final 40km. He eventually rolled in with a small group 14 minutes down, though that should give him some freedom to go for a stage win should he recover sufficiently.

Jeremy Vine posts video to Twitter of getting cut up by cabbie - but replies say he should have held back

Broadcaster and cyclist Jeremy Vine has posted another video to Twitter, asking this time whether he "should mind" getting cut up by a taxi in the City of London.

But the general view of people replying on the social network is that with the lights changing and the taxi starting to pull away at a junction where all traffic has to turn left from Newgate Street into King Edward Street, he should have anticipated what was going to happen and held back, rather than put himself in harm's way.

What do you think?

Looks like shit - But saves my life

German government digs in over "sexist" cycle helmet ad

The German government says it "stands by" an advertising campaign aimed at encouraging young people to wear cycle helmets but which has been accused of sexism.

As we reported on Sunday, an image in the campaign, shot by the acclaimed British fashion photographer Rankin, had come under criticism on social media since it showed a model wearing just a cycle helmet and a bra.

Other pictures in the initiative - which are accompanied by the slogan, "Looks like shit. But saves my life." have also attracted negative comments online.

But according to the Associated Press, transport ministry spokeswoman Transport Ministry spokeswoman Svenja Friedrich said yesterday that the whole point of the campaign was to grab attention, and she also highlighted that male models were involved.

“We can absolutely understand the criticism from various sides, but we still stand by the images,” she added.

Thomas de Gendt throws down huge power in impressive Volta a Catalunya opening stage victory

The Belgian Lotto-Soudal rider showed us what it takes to capture such an impressive victory via his Strava account, with a weighted average power of 352 watts over the 164km stage with over 3,000m of elevation. De Gendt weights 72kg.

de ghendt strava 1.PNG

De Gendt broke away with about 60km to go and more than held on for the victory, now enjoying a three minute lead over his nearest rival. What's more impressive is that De Gendt's ride shows that the peloton were tanking it from the start in places, with plenty of his early segments in the 400 to 500 watt range.

The second stage is slightly longer and could play into the hands of sprinters, although there are a couple of tricky climbs on the way. After yesterday's effort, it will be mighty impressive if De Gendt manages to keep his overall lead.

Bike shop Brexit sign divides opinion (shocker)

A tweeted picture of a pro-Brexit sign displayed in the window of a Welsh bike shop has – predictably – divided opinion, although not in quite the way you’d expect.

“I DON’T MIND BEING POORER AS LONG AS WE ARE OUT OF THE EU FOR GOOD”
proclaims the prominent sign in the window of East End Cycles in Colywn Bay, North Wales (not to be confused with shops of the same name in London and Edinburgh) which also points out that people under 70 won’t remember rationing and living on bread and dripping… er, no.

The main focus of online debate so far - hasn’t been around the rights or wrongs of Brexit or indeed any inconsistencies of the poster’s argument (someone has picked up on the …ahem, slight, over-estimate of the current UK population) but whether it’s valid to say you won’t be spending any money with East End Cycles because you don’t agree with the sentiments or undermining free speech by taking your money elsewhere, a somewhat moot point given that most of those commenting live at the other end of the country and quite a few of them are assuming East End Cycles is in the East End of London.
Conwy voted 54% to 46% for Brexit in the 2016 referendum. East End Cycles in Colwyn Bay does not appear to have a presence on social media, but you probably guessed that.

Asmara, Eritrea's capital, is a "cycling paradise" according to BBC feature

Future_of_Eritrea wikimedia commons

The reasons for it may not be all so positive, but the BBC reports that Asmara has unintentionally turned itself into a great place to ride a bike. Factors such as conflicts, diplomatic isolation and lack of funds to buy cars for the average Eritrean have led to the situation, but with cycling easily being the most popular sport in the country, brought over by the Italians in Eritrea's colonial days, you don't see too many locals complaining. The few cars that are on the streets are often old and buses are even few and far between, meaning the bike rules in Asmara.

The feature also details how Eritrea is one of the only countries in the Horn of Africa with an extensive environmental policy, with the government limiting plastic production and usage, running reforestation campaigns and distributing bikes imported from Dubai and China.

The country has also produced numerous pro cyclists, including Daniel Teklehaimanot Girmazion who last rode for Team Confidis.

Cape Town road rage YouTube still

‘What makes cyclists angry?’ asks study

“Interactions with cars” mostly

A recent study administered the Cycling Anger Scale (CAS) to a sample of 636 active cyclists (who regularly ride on-road) in a bid to understand the situations that provoke the most anger in cyclists, and whether this anger differed according to how comfortable they were with cycling.

Researchers identified four different situations that provoke anger in cyclists.

  1. Interactions with cars
  2. Interactions with pedestrians
  3. Interactions with other cyclists
  4. Police presence

The least anger provoking situations involved interactions with police. The most anger provoking situations involved interactions with cars.

The study said: “This is likely to be due to the higher level of danger associated with collisions with motor vehicles for cyclists.”

Anger also differed according to levels of cycling confidence. Those with higher levels of confidence generally reported lower levels of anger – particularly when interacting with cars and other cyclists.

In contrast, a 2017 study of driver anger at cyclists found that it is often borne of ignorance of the law.

Janet Street-Porter responds to the study that found more than half of drivers don’t view people on bikes as being completely human

There's no real need to link to the article. The headline reads "If cyclists don't want to be 'dehumanised' they could start by behaving like decent human beings" and you can pretty much auto-complete the rest of the piece.

We've covered Street-Porter's views on cycling before. She believes that cyclists want all other forms of transport ‘eradicated’ and once said that “cyclists and their powerful backers are destroying London for the rest of us.”

Mark Cavendish in Dimension Data 2017 kit (picture credit Scott Mitchell).jpg

Cavendish can "definitely" break the record for Tour de France stage wins says Bernie Eisel

At the start of the season, Mark Cavendish said he was starting to feel strong after two seasons where he felt he was, “in races, but not racing,” as a result of Epstein Barr Virus.

However, he withdrew from Paris-Nice earlier this month and Dimension Data say they don’t know when he’s going to race next.

Cavendish is currently four short of Eddy Merckx's all-time record of 34 Tour de France stage wins. It seems a way off, but his long-time team-mate and friend Bernie Eisel says he can “definitely” still get there.

Speaking to the BBC, Eisel said: "The record is what drives him and why he is still in the sport.

"If we look back, he has won probably 150 races and 30 stages in the Tour, [he is] a world champion on the track, on the road, and pretty much won a stage on every tour out there and won one-day races.

"He doesn't have to do it any more, but he is chasing that record. Of course, that creates a lot of pressure but he is dealing with it."

He added: "I think if we look back at Cav, he has been doing it for almost 15 years, in different teams, different line-ups.

"I think together with [Dimension Data team-mate] Mark Renshaw, they are the best lead-out man and best sprinter together."

Leave Vs Remain poll: Summer time or winter time?

The clocks go forward for potentially the last time ever this weekend - no, it’s not the end of the world, it’s just the end of bi-annual clock changes, at least it is in the EU so…

Apparently there was a continent wide public consultation about it, millions voted …we were a bit preoccupied so most of us seem to have missed it. Upshot is that from 2020 countries are going to decide whether to stick with permanent summer time or winter time - referendums perhaps?
So (inserting the usual Brexit caveats here) which will it be, lighter rides home on the winter commute or the lure of bonus daylight at 3.30am when the roads are nice and quiet? Have your say!*

Oxford to get “world’s first” Zero Cycling Zone … and dockless unicycle hire

The Oxford Mail has been getting in on the April Fool’s Day fun this morning with not one but two cycling-related spoof stories on its website.

First off is the news that the city of dreaming spires is to get what is billed as the “world’s first” Zero Cycling Zone (they clearly haven’t heard of Public Space Protection Orders).

Meanwhile, Oxford is also reported to be getting a dockless unicycle hire scheme, to be operated by a company called LOFO (geddit???!!!), with a  spokesman saying: “Having seen the problems the other companies have had with people chucking their bikes in the rivers, we have come up with an ingenious solution – our unicycles floats, so our staff will be able to collect them using big nets."

Stanley Johnson says licensing system for cyclists is "a crazy idea"

Whatever your views on his son's contribution to the Brexit process (who is often seen cycling around London himself), Johnson snr did a reasonably good job of discrediting professional rabble rouser Piers Morgan on the subject of compulsory licensing for cyclists, appearing on Good Morning Britain earlier. Morgan also appeared to get confused with the differences between travelling on foot and pedalling a bicycle during the debate, describing cyclists as "invisible people marching around anonymously on your bikes".

Game-changing iThirst bottle cage from Vel transmits your fluid levels via Bluetooth

vel-smartplus-bottlecage

The £80 cage includes a free three-month subscription to VEL's AquaFlo App (£12.99 per month then-after), which learns your hydration requirements and suggests sipping intervals based on your effort and the environmental temperature. When the volume of the bottle dips below 250ml, nearby trusted rehydration stations will be suggested on your head unit (we're hoping somewhere with nice cold beers).
Before long climbs or starred segments, your head unit will suggest shedding the required amount of liquid so you can go for a PB with just enough hydration on the bike and no extra weight.

It's currently "not quite ready for production" if you click to buy on Sigma's website. We're hoping it will be shipping out by April 1st next year though...

April the 1st round-up - some of the top banter we've received so far

In topsy-turvy 2019 April Fool's is perhaps less effective than it once was, but we've had a few cycling-related funnies brought to our attention already. We'll try to post more as we get them but here are the top ones so far...

Fat Lad at the Back launch Mario Chipolata bike range.

mario chipolata.PNG

The new range will be made specifically for the large rider. Chipolata is known for his superior pie-to-weight ratio and chalking up over 200 victories including the Flan Remo and twelve Tour de Pub stage wins.

Dure-Verse 12.5 speed

Online retailer Tredz have entered the groupset market with the latest drivesteain technology. Dure-Verse 12 speed lets you pedal backwards if you miss a turning and will "change your world".

Every citizen gets a free bike in Auckland

Bike locks

Would actually be a great idea if true, but bikeauckland.nz reports that the original $900m earmarked for walking and cycling infra would instead be dished out in the form of a new bike for everyone. A source said: "Look, it totally makes sense when you think about it. We’ve been operating in good faith with the idea that ‘if you build it, they will come’ – which works if you actually, you know, build it.’

"It’s just taking sooooo long. And we have a growing climate crisis to address. Hence the logic of doing it the other way around. As operators like Lime and OnzO have demonstrated, if you give people the gear, they’ll ride. And then you can build it if you need to."

Wiggle launch performance-enhancing spokey dokeys

spokey dokey wiggle.PNG

No longer just a kids accessory from years gone by, the spokey dokey has now made a comeback in the form of a carbon fibre performance-enhancing tool, and there is also a Brexit range for those brave enough to discuss politics on the bike. Olympic cyclist Dani Rowe says: “Cyclists across the UK now have another way to express their personality to other cyclists even while they’re desperately sucking in as much oxygen as possible on the most gruelling of climbs. What’s more, since using the ‘Carbon Pro’ Spokey Dokey I’ve gone faster for longer, it really is a must have.”

Marathon runner gets lifetime ban - for riding bike on course

A competitor at a marathon in China has received a lifetime ban from taking part in the race in future after she was caught cycling part of the course.

Still pictures uploaded in a video to YouTube show the woman, sporting the number D2113 on her vest, riding what appears to be a dockless hire bike.

Officials at the Xuzhou International Marathon, which had 22,000 participants, reportedly told her repeatedly to dismount but she ignored them, reports the Independent.

It still took her 5 hours, 38 minutes and 36 seconds to complete the marathon, although she is said to have covered the final 2.195 kilometres in 7 minutes 10 seconds.

Had she maintained that pace for the preceding 40 kilometres, she would have been around 12 minutes off Paula Radcliffe’s women’s marathon world record of 2 hours 15 minutes 25 seconds, set in London in 2003.

She was disqualified from the race and banned from all future events hosted by the organisers, who said: “After an official found her and stopped her, the participant again rode [on the bike]. She violated the rules.”

Pothole payouts cost Welsh councils £1.3m

Huge pothole (CC BY SA 2.0 licensed image by Tom Chancen_Flickr).jpg

New figures show £1.3m in pay-outs from pothole related claims have been made in the past five years in Wales.

According to Wales Online, research by Cycling UK shows Wales' councils paid £907,000 in compensation and £392,000 in legal fees.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council had the highest total for pothole related claims in Wales - paying out £354,888.46 in the last five years.

Cardiff Council, which was the second highest paying authority at £192,071, paid out 40 times more in pothole compensation payouts to cyclists than to motorists.

Betfred forced to pull Virtual Cycling game due to regulatory concerns

The bookmaker Betfred has been forced to withdraw a game called Virtual Cycling that it introduced earlier this week after industry regulator the Gambling Commission said it was investigation it, reports the Guardian.

The game was launched yesterday – the same day that new rules came into force slashing the maximum stake on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs), which have been criticised as helping fuel problem gambling, from £100 to £2, reports the Guardian.

In the game, punters use a coupon with a layout similar to a roulette table to “bet on when an animated cyclist travelling around a track will be overtaken by virtual competitors, based on numbers corresponding to sections of the track,” with a maximum stake of £500.

There are concerns that Betfred and rival bookmaker Paddy Power, which has also launched a roulette-style game, are using them to try and circumvent the new rules on FOBTs, which have proven hugely profitable for bookmakers since their introduction in 2001.

Betfred told the Guardian: “We’ve taken down Virtual Cycling to allow further discussion with the Gambling Commission.”

4iiii team up with Chipolo to bring tracking technology to their power meters

4iii chipolo tracker

4iiii and Chipolo have unveiled the world’s first integrated bike tracking feature embedded in to a power meter. Chipolo tracking will now offered as a standard feature in the 4iiii Precision range of crank-based power meters, adding some extra security to your bike as well as accurate power measurement.

If you're US-based and/or happen to be going to the Sea Otter Classic Bike Show, 4iiii will be hiding their power meters around the grounds from April 11th-13th, and participants will win one if they are able to find one of the 'lost' power meters. There are 30 to be won, and you can't say it's not a novel way of promoting the new product!

The 'weightless' Motionlab Active Commute backpack launches following successful Kickstarter campaign

motionlab backpack

The backpack has a capacity of 20 litres and was in development for nine years. They say it's the only backpack in the world that takes 100% of the weight off your shoulders, offering a ‘weightless’ feel by directing all the weight to the hips, where you're better able to carry load.

The flexible spine mirrors the human spine, and the wraparound harness locks the bag solidly on your back however you move. Each bag is adjustable to suit the wearer's body shape.

The technology comes at a price though - £189 to be exact. Head over to the Motionlab website for more info.

For the first time, Panini of Modena will be producing a Tour de France sticker album to coincide with the 100th year of the yellow jersey being used to mark out the overall leader, reports French publication Le Journal du Dimanche. The announcement was made in secret to the French press last weekend, with a photo of 2018 winner Geraint Thomas and the Champs-Elysées used on the promo poster.

We're not sure if you'll be able to get it in the UK yet, but if not these might just be worth heading out to mainland Europe for.

Panini has previously collaborated with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (see main picture above for Team Sky), with Bora--Hansgrohe sprinter Sam Bennett revealing that there was "nearly a riot"among the team's riders over the stickers.

The memorials will include a safety message, a bike symbol and the name of the traffic victim, reports NBC Los Angeles.

The council hope the memorials will serve as a permanent reminder to everyone to “share the road.”

Why Stanley Johnson was the pro cycling voice on Good Morning Britain

Although we'd love to see Piers Morgan try to make himself sound in the least bit coherent in a debate on cycling with Chris Boardman, we can't blame The Professor for not entering into a 'discussion' that is bound to be anything but sensible where Piers is involved.

Boris Johnson's father appeared on the show yesterday to fight the cycling corner in a debate on licensing cyclists. Johnson said it's a "crazy idea", to which Morgan described cyclists as "invisible people marching around anonymously on bikes."

Bradley Wiggins says Quick-Step boss Patick Lefevere "out of order" to suggest Remco Evenepoel was “too fat”

The Bradley Wiggins Show (Eurosport)

Lefevere told Belgian news site Humo that the 19-year-old Belgian prodigy, who came third in the time trial at Vuelta a San Juan in January, was 4kg overweight and "too fat" last week - and Wiggins has described the comments as out of order on the latest addition of his Eurosport podcast. Wiggins said: “It's not great for a young 19-year-old kid. It's not the best man-management.

“When we think what has happened in football, in terms of Mourinho losing dressing rooms and the players being more powerful than managers now, cycling is still stuck in the dark ages. I say stuck in the dark ages but it should be like that. Managers are there for a reason. But it's kind of how football used to be. The manager making his public statement about a rider in order to put him in his place. But time will tell, and as Matt (Stephens, in previous comments) said we don't really know the full ins and outs of it."

Wiggins' guest on the show Matt Stephens commented: “Maybe, as Brad said, it's an old-school way of putting him in his place, perhaps there has been a bit too much attitude on board, I don’t know, but it is a rather unorthodox way of trying to pull somebody back into line, especially in the current climate of trying to look after the mental welfare of young riders.”

Cyclist injured as thieves try to steal bike

A cyclist in Yorkshire sustained what police described as minor head injuries when two men tried to steal his bike in Bridlington.

The incident happened on Friday 15 March close to the bowling green off Queensgate..

The victim sustained bruising but managed to get away from his assailants, together with his bike.

According to police, one suspect is described as white, 5’ 6” and has a shaven head. He was dressed in a black hooded top, black tracksuit bottoms and dark footwear, while the other was 5’ 8” with a dark blue tracksuit and dark footwear.

Anyone with information is requested to contact Humberside Police on 101 quoting reference number 16/39125/19.

This again...

We think this has done the rounds before, but the could-be-a-parody account 'Stop Leftist Hate' is at it again with the bizarre idea to make cyclists wear high-vis bibs with registration plates. New survey of 21,000 drivers by the AA Charitable Trust finds 66% think cyclists are "inconsiderate"

London bike commuters in Lycra (copyright Britishcycloing.org_.uk)

The results weren't all bad, however, with a huge 95% agreeing that cyclists are vulnerable road users and should be given more space, reports motor1.com. Of those who thought that cyclists lacked consideration, the over 65's were most likely to hold the opinion (69%), with 57% of 18-24's agreeing.

93% of respondents said they always look out for cyclists, which is an increase on the 89% who said so from a survey five years ago. Director of the AA Charitable Trust Edmund King said of the findings: “Our new research shows there is still some way to go in terms of ensuring everyone on the road looks out for each other.

"On the roads it should never be a case of drivers versus cyclists or motorcyclists. Everyone is on the road to get somewhere and by looking out for each other we can ensure we do so safely. It is disappointing that two-thirds of drivers feel cyclists are inconsiderate and this shows that more needs to be done by drivers and cyclists to co-exist safely and peacefully. The irony is that most cyclists are drivers and many drivers are cyclists.”

Perceived conflict between drivers and cyclists has been a hot topic recently, with Piers Morgan sticking his oar in on Good Morning Britain earlier this week and renewed calls for a new Dutch-style word to distinguish cycle commuters and racing cyclists.

Organisers slam British Cycling after being forced to cancel Bristol Grand Prix 2019

Organisers of the Bristol Grand Prix have slammed British Cycling after cancelling this year’s event, which had been due to be the fifth edition.

In a statement published on the event’s website, they said: “From the start, the Bristol Grand Prix has been part of the Bristol cycling community and has been dedicated to women’s racing, youth development and creating a sustainable and locally produced race.”

But explaining their decision to cancel this year’s edition, they said: “As a race we have found that our objectives and our ethics are irreconcilable with the requirements of the governing body.

“The restrictions that are placed upon the race both undermine women’s racing and prevent us from including youth riders and local riders and clubs being part of the day.

“Additionally as race organisers we are being forced out of our race due to unfavourable conditions imposed upon us.”

They also warned the event’s backers to beware of a company that is apparently targeting them, saying: “Please note, it has come to our attention that a company is contacting our race sponsors claiming to raise money on behalf of the race.

“Please be aware that this company has nothing to do with the race and has no contract with us as organisers.”

Christian Prudhomme says he "feels sad" about resignation of Yorkshire tourism boss Gary Verity following expenses scandal

Gary Verity, Bernard Hinault and Christian Prudhomme (picture Simon Wilkinson, SWPix.com)

Prudhomme was speaking at an awkward tenth anniversary celebration of Welcome to Yorkshire, taking place after the recent resignation of its boss Sir Gary Verity due to a scandal involving alleged irregularities in his expenses claims. Welcome to Yorkshire brought the Tour de France Grand Depart to the county in 2014.

The Guardian reports that Prudhomme says he "feels sad" for Verity: “I cannot help but feel sad for the man who made me discover your beautiful county, for the man who brought together our ‘ooh la la’ with your ‘ee bah gum’, the man who made me love Yorkshire: mon ami, Gary Verity.”

After the event, Welcome to Yorkshire Board member Keith Stewart answered questions over the scandal, and said there will inevitably be meetings with West Yorkshire Police: “If there is anything that is thrown up from the investigations that we think are police matters, we will obviously pass them to the police. We have nothing to hide”, he said.

Actor Christopher Biggins has phone stolen by a thief on a bike

Christopher Biggins wikimedia commons

The actor and TV personality, best known for playing Lukewarm in Porridge, told BBC Wiltshire that he was mugged of his mobile phone outside of a Covent Garden restaurant on Wednesday night: “I was calling an Uber. It was quarter to midnight and I was on my phone.

“I was looking down towards Trafalgar Square and I was seeing where he was, how far away, and suddenly a hooded cyclist came by and stole my phone – just took it out of my hand.

“The terrifying thing is now, in London, there are so many stabbings, so many thefts. Apparently this happens all the time but it was such a violation.

“I shouted very loudly because I have a very loud voice. But it was quarter to midnight and no-one was around really. So he got away.”

Gent-Wevelgem podium (via Twitter video)

Tour of Flanders contender blames Champagne celebration for bronchitis that might keep him out of the race

Sporza reports that AG2R La Mondiale's Oliver Naesen is suffering from bronchitis and reckons he contracted it after getting drenched with Champagne after Gent-Wevelgem last Sunday.

Naesen finished third in the race and celebrated in customary style with winner Alexander Kristoff and second-placed John Degenkolb.

It doesn’t seem like the Belgian is too bad though. He finished 19th at Dwars door Vlaanderen earlier in the week.

The Tour of Flanders is on Sunday.

6. Confusion at Dwars door Vlaanderen as men’s race has to be neutralised

Dwaars door Vlaanderen 2019 neutralisation

There was confusion at the Belgian semi-classic the Dwars door Vlanderen as the men’s race had to be neutralised twice. The first was because a crash had caused a delay in the women’s race ahead,  won by Trek Segafredo’s Ellen van Dijk, the second due to the break being left behind the peloton when racing resumed. But even once the race had been halted again to allow the break's 2 minute 15 seconds advantage to be restored, it turned out that one of the riders in the escape group had missed out on the resumption.

Tour de Yorkshire 2019 airport announcement

Tour de Yorkshire gets official airport

What’s that screeching sound?

Don’t worry it’s just the Tour de Yorkshire pre-race publicity barrel getting a good hard scrape to deliver today’s news that the race has announced the Official Airport for this year’s event… yes, it’s Leeds Bradford (but you’d already guessed that) I suppose Humberside could have been in the running. For our money at least stand out line from the press release has to be from Leeds Bradford Airport Chief executive, David Laws who said:

“We are incredibly proud of our Yorkshire roots and are delighted to now be part of such an exciting legacy.”

It’s the ‘roots’ bit… but you’d probably guessed that too.

"Code Brown" - Sir Chris Hoy exits Silverstone track at 100mph

Sir Chris Hoy had what he euphemistically referred to as a "Code Brown" while racing a Caterham 7 single-seat car at Silverstone at the weekend - exiting the track at 100mph thanks to a jammed throttle on the fastest corner of the Northamptonshire motor racing venue.

Among those commenting on the six-time Oympic champion track cyclist's post on Instagram was fellow Scot Craig MacLean, who won silver alongside Hoy in the team sprint at Sydney in 2000, who simply said, "Crash. Bang. Wallop."

The bike Mathieu van der Poel rode to fourth place at the Tour of Flanders

The 24-year-old didn't quite manage to replicate his dad Adri's achievements in Flanders 33 years ago, but still placed an impressive fourth on the cobbles in his first season racing classics at senior level. Shared by Canyon on their Facebook page, here is the bike he rode on the day in more detail...

Mathieu Van der Poel canyon aeroad flanders tyres

The Canyon Aeroad is dressed with a full Shimano Dura-Ace groupset and Dura-Ace R9170 C60 carbon disc brake wheels. On those wheels, van der Poel is running Vittoria's new Corsa tyres with their Graphene 2.0 compound, in a 28mm width for some extra cushion over the cobbles. We're not 100% sure if they're the new tubeless versions (you can read about them here) or tubulars as favoured by most of the pro peloton - confirmation coming soon hopefully.

Canyon have also paid tribute to van der Poel's 2018 Dutch national championship win, and the colours of the Netherlands flag adorns the seatstays and fork.

London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, the world's first to be enforced 24 hours a day, launched this morning

According to London Mayor Sadiq Khan almost 1,000 people a year in London are hospitalised with asthma caused by pollution - and he has said this morning that the new Ultra Low Emission Zone, or ULEZ, is part of the solution. The charge will be £12.50 a day to drive into central London, and all diesel vehicles plus most cars that are over 14 years old will be liable to pay. In more good news for cyclists and pedestrians, Transport for London also predict that traffic will be cut by 5% in Central London.

The charge has been called a 'tax on the poor' by some, and a notable exception are London Black Cabs - Uber and other private hire firms will have to pay. Do you think ULEZ is fair, or other the other hand, does it not go far enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments...

6,000+ sign petition for Birmingham velodrome

More than 6,000 people have signed a petition for a velodrome to be built in Birmingham ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The city was awarded the event in 2017 after the original host city, Durban, pulled out of staging the multis-sports event for financial reasons.

Birmingham’s successful bid was based on using existing venues such as the Alexander Stadium for athletics and the National Exhibition Centre for boxing, judo, table tennis and freestyle wrestling.

But the track cycling events are due to take place 130 miles away, at the Lee Valley Velodrome in London - whicch, by pure coincidence, has a capacity of around 6,000 people.

The petition will be handed to Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, on 15 April.

David Viner, who organised the petition, said: “The Commonwealth Games are going to be a superb opportunity for Birmingham and the West Midlands but it is such a shame that the track cycling is to be held in London.

"The new aquatics centre in Sandwell with 5,000 seats for the Games and retaining just 1,000 seats afterwards is a perfect example of how a competition velodrome arena, costing £35m, with a similar seating plan could have been built for 2022.

"Councillor Ward has an open mind and has engaged with us. Now we hope the feasibility plan will prove there is a strong case for a modest training and development velodrome arena, with room in the track centre for multi-community based sports including disabled and sight impaired sports.

"We have benefited from firm support from many local people and we thank every person who has supported the petition.

"We have velodrome experts on hand and there is still time to get the velodrome built in time for the Games,” he added.

"I think it is important that our campaign is viewed as working with Birmingham City Council to get a velodrome and get a great legacy. The campaign is not just a protest."

Painted cycle lanes may make roads more dangerous for riders, says Australian study

Painted cycle lanes may make roads more dangerous for riders, says Australian study

Painted cycle lanes may make roads more dangerous for bike riders, according to a new report by Victoria, Australia-based Monash University.

The study, reported on here by the Herald Sun, followed 60 people who regularly commute by bike in Melborune and followed them on their daily routes.

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/bicycle-lanes-no-guarantee-of...

Deputy head of prehospital emergency and trauma research, Ben Beck, said that the lanes made cyclists more liable to be subjected to close overtakes.

“Specifically, passing events on roads with a bicycle lane and a parked car were on average 40cm closer than events on roads with no bicycle lane or parked cars,” he explained.

“The magnitude of that difference is quite substantial. As someone who cycles myself, we all know that a painted lane next to parked cars is not a safe space.”

The solution he proposed? Unsurprisingly, create more protected cycle lanes for riders.

Rosie Pham, who took part in the study, said: “It’s scary and luckily nothing’s happened to me but there’s been a lot of near-misses, and when people yell, that scares me and I wonder if they are going to hit me.”

Cumbria MP admits he's "nuts" as he prepares to ride the Fred Whitton Challenge

An MP from Cumbria will next month ride what many consider to be the UK’s toughest sportive – the Fred Whitton Challenge, covering 114 miles and taking in climbs including the Hardknot and Wrynose Passes.

The event, first held in 1999, is on the doorstep of Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock, who is aiming to raise money for the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team.

On his page on Virgin Money Giving, he says: “So everyone says the Fred Whitton is one of the very hardest one-day amateur cycling challenges out there – and I’m doing it as my first 100-plus mile sportive. Which I realise is nuts. 114 miles and ten of the biggest climbs in the Lake District - some with 30 PER CENT GRADIENTS.

“The Fred was started 20 years ago in memory of a legendary Cumbrian cyclist. It is pretty jammy to get a place in the ballot but I’ve just fallen off twice trying to get up Hardknott – which you do after 100 miles – and now I have got the fear.

“The event raises money for a number of brilliant local and national charities – I’ve chosen to focus on the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team whose volunteers give an amazing service to stricken climbers and walkers on the fells from their base outside Broughton-in-Furness in my constituency.”

Victor Campenaerts discusses gearing for hour record attempt in his latest diary entry for Lotto Soudal

Victor_Campenaerts_Ridley_Arena_TT_16.jpg

Campenaerts’ team are documenting his build-up to the attempt twice weekly, and with just six days to go he’s revealed that the gearing choice still isn’t set in stone: “The cadence on the track is higher compared to the road, but it still needs to feel comfortable in order to keep the right lines and to control your heart rate and breathing.

“The 59 X 14, 60 X 14, 61 X 14 as well as the 63 X 15 are options. But with the 59 X 14 and the 63 X 15, I would have to maintain a cadence of 104 and as I am a road cyclist by nature, that turned out too high for me. So the 61 or 60 X 14 remained, being 100 to 102 revolutions per minute. That does not seem like a big difference, but it still is. Bradley Wiggins managed to hold 104 revolutions during his attempt, the highest of all modern Hour Record attempts, but he was also trained on the track.”

Campenaerts will attempt on either the 16th or 17th April at the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico. You can check out the bike he'll be riding in more details here

The owner of the Chicken Dinnerz Youtube account, who describes himself as a ‘cyclocross racer and editor of silly videos’, does his own version of Roubaix in Blighty in tribute to the famous race. Human barrier in Wellington, NZ formed to protest against lack of protection for cyclists

A people-protected bike lane was formed by fed up protesters in New Zealand's capital this morning, highlighting the slow progress the city is making on protected cycleways. Stuff reports that 45 cyclists formed the human barrier, waving and shouting at cyclists to get into the protected zone.

Cycling Action Network project manager Patrick Morgan told Stuff that cyclists have lobbied Wellington City Council for twenty years to build cycle lanes in the city centre: "They've made some good progress on Hutt Rd and Oriental Bay, and in Kilbirnie, but there are almost no bike lanes in the CBD. We're fed up. We need protection."

He said an estimated 250 cyclists rode through the people-protected barrier between 7.45am and 8.20am.

Something new from Wahoo?

wahoo.PNG

Here's some speculation to start your morning off, courtesy of an email we got from Wahoo... what could it be? The Elemnt and Elemnt Bolt have consistently rated well with our reviewers but any negative comments usually refer to the mapping capabilities. Something more trail-orientated perhaps? We'll have the full story tomorrow.

Bar wars

There’s an energy bar brawl brewing.

On March 6, Clif took out a full-page ad in the New York Times challenging rival firm Kind to go organic, offering help and 10 tons of free organic ingredients

In a tweet, Kind replied: “It’s deceptive to try to pass off organic brown rice syrup as healthy. We’d be happy to meet with you and share why we focus on making snacks that always lead with nutrient-dense ingredients like whole nuts, whole grains & whole fruit – instead of sugar.”

Forbes reports that Kind is now setting up a pop-up where visitors will be able to use a mobile device to see the sugar content of common nutrition and energy bars and also explore the different types of sweeteners used in these and other processed foods.

Hammersmith Bridge closed indefinitely to motorists due to safety concerns... which happens to be great news for pedestrians and cyclists

While the indefinite closure of Hammersmith Bridge is being blamed on Conservative austerity because of lack of funds to repair it, on the bright side it means a much quieter commute for cyclists and pedestrians.

The BBC reports that the bridge has been closed after safety checks revealed "critical faults", and the council were left with no choice but to shut it to motorists until refurbishment costs can be met. Hammersmith and Fulham council said "government budget cuts" are the reason why Transport for London can't repair it.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the bridge from Barnes to Hammersmith.

Danny MacAskill to stage show at Edinburgh Fringe

The Herald reports that MacAskill will be bringing a special Fringe version of his Drop and Roll show to Edinburgh this year.

MacAskill said: “Edinburgh provided the best backdrop for what became my breakthrough video back in 2009. Ten years on it seems like the perfect time to come back with the team for a brand new show in The Meadows. See you in August.”

A tongue-in-cheek 80s rock homage, MacAskill first toured Drop and Roll in 2015.

Buttertubs - simon ward

They're going to put toilets on Buttertubs Pass and Grinton Moor for the World Championships after… what happened during the 2014 Grand Depart

The Northern Echo reports that North Yorkshire is keen to avoid mistakes made for the 2014 Grand Départ of the Tour de France.

These include a failure to provide toilets on the categorised climbs of Buttertubs Pass and Grinton Moor.

Richmondshire District Council leader, Yvonne Peacock, said: “There wasn’t much that went wrong with the Tour de France, but there was a bit of a mix-up with who was providing the toilets and they didn’t turn up. That’s a situation that we will ensure is not repeated for the World Championships.

“We know that people will be heading to Grinton Moor and Buttertubs as it is absolutely spectacular seeing the bikes going up the climbs.”

In 2014, about 30,000 spectators turned up on Buttertubs alone, so you can see why they’re keen to address this.

Sounds like This Morning wasn't interested in the police view on Lord Robert Winston's demented ideas about bicycle licences

Earlier this week, Lord Winston continued his absolute non-starter campaign to get cyclists licenced and registered in an appearance on This Morning on ITV.

After the Government told him there was no prospect of requiring cyclists to be licensed and insured because the costs would massively outweigh the benefits, he floated electronic tagging as some sort of solution.

Chris Boardman described both Winston's stance and the fact that outlets give it airtime as 'shameful'.

The tweet attracted an intriguing and enlightening reply from West Midlands roads police.

Swiss government says coffee "not essential" for life (we beg to differ)...

coffee - 1.jpg

The Swiss have stockpiled coffee and other provisions since World War One in preparation for shortages should any other national emergencies break out, and now the government want to phase out coffee from the list by 2022 because they don't deem it essential. The explanation on the Swiss Federal Council website reads: "The national economic supply has checked the maintenance of today's compulsory storage of coffee. She came to the conclusion that coffee is not vital according to the criteria that apply today. That is, coffee contains almost no calories and therefore does not make any contribution to food security from a nutritional point of view. The risk of supply disruptions is also rated as low. The growing areas are spread over three continents and the harvests are possible all year round. The continuation of the compulsory storage of coffee is therefore no longer justified from a supply policy perspective."

Who wants to tell them that they're wrong?

But what if that gets pinched?

Hull Live reports that an increase in cycle thefts in Hull City Centre has led the British Transport Police in the area to deploy this gold bike to highlight the issue. Cyclists are being prompted to have their bikes registered to prevent thefts. Hopefully the gold deterrent will work rather than ending up in a cash converters with the other nicked bikes...

The costs and benefits of driving and cycling

A new study has calculated the per kilometre cost of driving, cycling and walking in the EU.

Eltis reports that the parameters used were:

  1. Environment
  2. Travel time and vehicle operation
  3. Health, accidents and perceived comfort
  4. Perceived safety and discomfort
  5. Quality of life, tourism and infrastructure

They concluded that each kilometre driven by car incurs an external cost of €0.11, while cycling and walking represent benefits of €0.18 and €0.37 per kilometre.

Extrapolated to the total number of passenger kilometres driven, cycled or walked in the European Union, the cost of driving is about €500 billion per year.

Due to positive health effects, cycling is an external benefit worth €24 billion per year and walking €66 billion per year.
