Wales to make 20mph the default speed limit in residential areas

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford has unveiled plans for 20 mph to be made the sefault speed limit for residential areas acrosss the country, in a move that has unsurprisingly been welcomed by the campaign group 20s Plenty and its founder, Rod King, who said on Twitter: "The time has come to abandon the 30mph and 50kmh national urban limits in favour a 20mph/30kmh urban standard as advised by @WHO as the safe speed limit where motor drivers wish to mix with pedestrians and cyclists. Well done Wales for its 21st century vision on liveability."

Scotland needs to invest in active travel to help tackle climate emergency, urge professors

Two professors in Scotland have outlined how they believe encouraging more people to cycle, walk and use public transport can dramatically improve the lives of people in cities through reducing air pollution and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Adrian Davis, professor of transport and health at the Transport Research Institute, Edinburgh Napier University and Professor Chris Oliver, a retired surgeon who was chair in Scotland for Cycling UK from 2012-14, shared their thoughts in a column for The Scotsman today following Edinburgh’s first car-free day last Sunday.

“With the declaration by Nicola Sturgeon of a ‘climate emergency’, we outline here why sustainable transport must be understood as critical in any strategy for Scotland to go ‘further and faster’ in tackling climate change,” they wrote, going on to describe transport as an “Achilles’ heel” in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

They cited a Sport England study that found that “town and city-wide active travel interventions are the most effective at increasing walking, cycling and overall physical activity,” as witnessed for example by the uptake of travelling by bike in three former Sustainable Towns, Peterborough, Darlington and Worcester/Redditch, which benefited from increased investment from 2004-09, with cycling and walking levels maintained in the ensuing years.

“The major mode share for sustainable travel across much of continental Europe is not culturally driven,” they continued. “It is because decade in, decade out funding has been at over £10 per head of population.

“In urban areas cycling could be a normal, everyday activity by 2040. The latest Sustrans Bike Life report predicts in Edinburgh alone, with adequate funding, that by 2040 just by more cycling, 47,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions would be saved annually, equivalent to the carbon footprint of 10,000 people,” they added.

Dame Sarah Storey to launch women only Skoda DSI Cycling Academy

Skoda UK is launching an initiative that aims to provide an intensive training program for five female cyclists aged between 17 and 25. Applications close on May 24th and 50 riders will then be invited to a testing day on 10th of June at Lea Valley VeloPark undertaking four tests including a flying lap, a peak power test, a three-minute maximal test, and a 12-minute steady state challenge.

Five will then be selected and will get the chance to ride the 215Km Rheims stage of this year’s Tour de France in the company of the Donnons Des Elle Au Vélo J-1 cycling team - who will be riding the whole Tour a day ahead of the men’s race. I’d urge any woman who has a passion for the sport and a desire to succeed, to apply.”

The owner of the 'Drivers for the registration of cyclists' account is rearing his confused, hateful head again

And his latest viral post has been picked up a similarly hateful UK tabloid, with the title "Cyclists fall for fake road safety awareness campaign using the slogan 'watch out for dumb f***s on bikes'" (we won't link to it here). The sign on the bus was actually photoshopped, but of course it was created to stir up antagonism and division online which unfortunately, DFROC seem to have succeeded in doing.

The mysterious Facebook account was the subject of a feature by Cycling Tips (read the excellent investigative piece here) that revealed the owner is actually a cyclist who began his bitter feud due to various altercations with his former cycling club. The account disappears and reappears periodically, depending on how many people report the posts.

Anti motorbike barriers on Notts cycle path will stop cyclists too say campaigners

Cyclists have been protesting against new barriers scheduled to go up on the path in Rushcliffe, as they will prove restrictive to people with tricycles, adaptive bikes, e-bikes and cargo bikes. The idea is to prevent illegal motorcycling on the path, however opponents say it's not worth doing at the expense of others using the path perfectly legally.

Matt Turner, the chair of the Pedals cycle campaign group, told Nottinghamshire Live: "If you take the approach of physically trying to block out these nuisance motorcycle riders, rather than catch the individuals involved, then you block out lots of other people too and you make a crucial part of the cycle network unusable. We are asking Rushcliffe Borough Council to reconsider."

Melbourne police offering huge $50,000 reward to find menace who has been placing tacks on cycle paths for over five years

melbourne

It's almost worth flying over there to catch the bugger yourself, as police in Melbourne, Australia are offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who helps them catch a saboteur who has been placing tacks on cycle paths and roads in the city since 2014.

Yahoo News Australia reports that it's led to hundreds of tyres being punctured and some cyclists sustaining serious injuries as a result of the tacks, placed mostly in and around Yarra Boulevard. Pedestrians and dogs have also been injured, according to Police.

It's hoped that the chance of a huge payoff for someone, plus CCTV cameras being installed along Yarra Boulevard, will eventually lead to catching the culprit after a five year hate campaign, presumably with cyclists as his/her main target.

Chris Froome is putting all his eggs in the Tour de France basket this year

Chris Froome is one win away from equalling the record of five Tour de France victories.

He says that after racing and winning the Giro d’Italia last year, the Tour is his overwhelming focus this year.

"I loved riding the Giro – it was such a different challenge," he told the BBC. "It's the hardest Grand Tour for me personally to win, given my riding style and my characteristics."

He continued: "The Vuelta is probably the most enjoyable Grand Tour of the three for me. That time of year in Spain is super-hot, and I love those conditions – so gruelling, so savage. From a pure, suffering point of view, the Vuelta really pushes you to your limits.

"But for now, the Tour is the big aim – I'm putting all my eggs in that basket, not spreading myself thin all across the calendar."

Froome says that as a result of this focus, he’s feeling a lot fresher this year.

“A year ago I was going into the Giro as my fourth Grand Tour in a row, and I'd won the last three.

“I felt as if I was burning the candle at both ends. I'm not doing the Giro this year, I didn't do the Vuelta at the end of last year.

"So I had a really good winter, really stayed on it, and I came into the season a lot more rested, a lot more focused than I did last year.”

CityConnect (via Twitter).jpg

Have a million people cycled on CityConnect route in Leeds?

The questions about the number of people using the CityConnect cycle route aren’t the usual sorts of questions about whether a cycle route is actually being used as much as official figures claim.

A letter in the Yorkshire Post points out: “It turns out that there are seven automatic cycle counters along the route, each of which records a ‘trip’ when a cyclist rides past.

“But since one trip is logged every time a bike crosses any of the counters, surely the total number of trips could include one cyclist being counted up to seven times for what is just a single journey?

“And that’s one journey in one direction; if the same cyclist made a return leg, they’d be counted up to another seven additional times.”

Mumsnet contributor unhappy at "having to be careful not to knock cyclists over"

road rage.jpg

The disgruntled Jemima232, who terrifyingly appears to have a driving licence, titled the thread 'Cyclists and the Highway Code', and typed : "Huh. Just Huh. And Wow, too. So now we have to be careful not to knock cyclists over, when driving past them. Of course, they don't have to be careful not to knock anyone over when they go through red traffic lights, do they? As if they need more legislation in their favour. It absolutely enrages me."

A good proportion of the replies make us think there's hope for the world yet though, with one of the first saying: "You're so far beyond unreasonable, you are being a total dick. You weigh your slight annoyance at someone riding through a red light as more important than than right of a human being not to get mashed by a car. Shut up and grow a brain."

The thread is currently 172 messages long and growing, with Jemima232 eventually backtracking a few pages in by suggesting they just meant they wished cyclists would respect the rules of the road, and wasn't at all suggesting they would behave recklessly in a much larger motorised vehicle. Indeed, at 14:42 on the 8th May Jemima232 informs us that they used to live in London and 98% of cyclists "drive through red lights". We're unsure where Jemima232 got this statistic from, but we do know that officially there was a five year high of 1,792 road deaths in 2016, with over 99% involving a motorised vehicle. Out of 400 pedestrian deaths each year, on average 2.5 involve a bicycle.

*We couldn't find a suitable image of an angry driver who is also a mum (and not sure how you'd depict this)... so we've used the corker above instead.

Doctors in Cardiff will be able to prescribe free nextbike hires to patients who need to do more exercise

The pilot scheme will allow GPs at two practices in the Cardiff area to prescribe patients with a six month free nextbike membership if the doctor feels they need to get more exercise and/or lose weight, reports the BBC. Public health consultant Dr Tom Porter said it was "one of the easiest ways to reduce your risk of ill health while building your cardiovascular fitness".

GP Dr Karen Pardy said: "Whilst we are aware of the many benefits of exercise for our patients, people are sometimes reluctant to engage.

"nextbike on prescription allows people to have a go at cycling around Cardiff and realise how this can help to support their overall wellbeing."

Drag2Zero's 'The Projects That Made Us' series begins, with part 1 telling the story of the first Giant Trinity

D2Z_GiantTT_Mar2019_MSWIM-07480

Aerodynamics expert Simon Smart was first approached by the T-Mobile team in 2007, soon after he founded Drag2Zero, to design a new TT bike. The result was the Giant Trinity: “The Trinity was a really intense project that came very soon after we founded Drag2Zero. We had very little time or budget, and we were learning on the job how to test bikes in a wind tunnel, but it was an exciting period and it produced a genuinely game-changing bike. It was very enjoyable to look back at the project.”

D2Z_GiantTT_Mar2019_MSWIM-07548

As you can see above there wasn't proper brake integration on the original Trinity (mostly due to budget constraints) and it features the nosecone that the UCI promptly banned shortly after. You can read the full feature here.

Can of beer thrown at Paralympic champion during training

Morris's condition, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, is a nervous system malfunction that causes extreme pain and related sensory abnormalities. She has previously had both legs amputated because of the condition.

When she suffers an injury, her body reacts in a damaging way, which means that an accident impacts her more seriously.

After a crash in 2011, Morris was concerned that her body might reject her damaged shoulder. In an interview with the BBC she spoke about her fear that her arm might need to be amputated.

Surrey Police asked whether the incident had been reported to them.

Morris said it hadn’t and explained why.

In July 2012, Morris was hit from behind by a car while competing in a time trial near Guildford.

She was left with whiplash, shoulder injuries and a damaged handcycle. She recovered in time to compete in the Paralympics in September, taking bronze in the H1-3 road race.

Morris took a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics as a handcyclist, and eight years later at Rio she won gold in the women's single sculls as a rower.

Your chance to join legendary bike tester, rider, and proud Yorkshireman, Guy Kestevan on a one off, on bike recce of the 14km finishing loop of this year's Road Worlds, round the lumpy (not bumpy) roads of Harrogate. The start/finish goes the wrong way up/down a one way road so the only way for Guy to get the recce vid was to jump on to the course (he got the nod to do so) ahead of the Women's Tour de Yorkshire - which also used the same loop. Guy's always entertaining an enlightening company and he is in this vid too. He's also a strong rider - at the very top end of 'mere mortal', so you get a good impression of how hard that finishing lap is going to be even for the pros.

12-month ban for Kiwi driver who doubled back to hit cyclist on pavement

This is quite the sentence. A Kiwi motorist who deliberately hit a cyclist and broke his leg has basically been grounded.

Sean Woollgar, a cyclist from Carterton just outside Wellington, was riding home from the supermarket in 2017 when Joshua Rowland started beeping his horn at him.

Woollgar said he turned and said, “Hey, what's up?” and the motorist then started tailgating him and driving alongside “really close.”

"At that point I got a bit angry, and I went up onto the pavement and swore," said Woollgar.

He tried to ride away, but Rowland followed him. Stuff reports that he eventually turned round, mounted the pavement and drove into Woollgar.

As the cyclist lay on the ground with a broken leg, Rowland walked up to him and said, "serves you right".

Woollgar’s leg was so badly broken he will likely never have full use of it again.

In court this week, Rowland's lawyer said his client’s head "was not in a good space" when the incident took place.

Rowland pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and also admitted driving in breach of his limited licence terms, unaccompanied and without displaying an L plate.

He was sentenced to 10 months' home detention, 200 hours of community work, disqualified from driving for a year, and was ordered to pay $5000 emotional harm reparation to Woollgar. He also has to take treatment programmes and counselling as directed.

Woollgar said he never wanted Rowlands to go to prison. "He has got anger issues. He needs to deal with it and prison is not the place for that."

He did say that he would have liked him to be banned from driving for more than 12 months though. "Hopefully he will appreciate how lightly he got off," he said.

Vélo Birmingham & Midlands crash: Cyclist's death leads to witness appeal

$

Police have issued a witness appeal after a participant in yesterday's  Vélo Birmingham & Midlands closed road sportive died after crashing at around 7.50am on Coleshill Road, Atherstone.

Warwickshire Police say that the cyclist, a man in his 50s, came off his bike at around the 23 mile mark during a steep downhill section with tight bends. He was taken to hospital for treatment but unfortunately passed away; his family have been informed.

Sergeant Shaun Bridle from Warwickshire Police said: "While investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed it.

"We are particularly trying to identify any cyclists who may have seen anything or who may have GoPro camera footage from around the time of the incident to please get in touch.

"Our thoughts remain with the victim's family at this difficult time."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to call Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 84 of 12 May.

Velo Birmingham acknowledged they are aware of the incident and released a statement on social media: "We are saddened to report that a rider taking part in the event has passed away after being airlifted to hospital this morning.

"We are currently working closely with Warwickshire Police and authorities to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this incredibly sad development. The rider’s family have been informed and all our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

The death of the cyclist is one of a number of incidents at the event, which attracted 17,000 entrants, that have hit the headlines, with one involving a driver, since arrested which we reported last night, who ignored the instructions of marshals to stop and allegedly deliberately drove at one, leaving him with a suspected broken hip.

Event blamed for death of horse and foal; and post ride traffic

Meanwhile, the BBC is reporting that a mare and her newborn foal died after a vet was unable to reach them due to road closure. Owner Helen van Heyningen said her horse Penny went into labour at around 9.30am on Sunday and died an hour later, and the event security marshal refused the vet access to her farm. The full facts are yet to emerge and Velo Birmingham organisers haven't commented.

Members of the public and even riders attempting to drive home from the event reported that traffic was at a standstill in Birmingham for most of Sunday afternoon, and some participants were left stranded in car parks for hours after they finished the ride.

Samuel Sanchez handed two-year doping ban

Samuel Sanchez, the 2008 Olympic road race champion, has been handed a backdated two-year ban for doping– although the UCI accepted his explanation that his positive test arose from a contaminated supplement.

The 41-year-old was sacked by BMC Racing in October 2017 after his B-sample was found to be positive, with the date from which his ban takes effect being 17 August of that year, the day on which he was provisionally suspended.

Sanchez, second overall at the Vuelta in 2009 and Tour de France the following year after Alberto Contador and Denis Menchov were disqualified for doping, has not raced since.

News of his ban comes as former German national champion Danilo Hondo, now retired, admitted being part of a blood doping ring being investigated in the German city of Erfurt, with his confession leading to him being sacked as coach to the Swiss national cycling federation.

British champion Connor Swift joins French team Arkea-Samsic

British road champion Connor Swift has joined the French team Arkea-Samsic with immediate effect, with his principal role there being to provide leadout duties for 11-time Tour de France stage winner, Andre Greipel.

The 23-year-old, ninth overall at the Tour de Yorkshire earlier this month and the cousin of Team Ineos rider Ben Swift, has raced for Madison-Genesis since 2017 and also had a spell as a trainee with Dimension Data last year.

He said: “I’m over the moon with the opportunity that has come around! Things like this don’t happen often and to be able to step up to Pro Continental level with Arkea and go there to be part of a team helping out Griepel will be pretty surreal.

"I am super thankful to everyone involved to make this happen and of course Madison Genesis for the past two years and allowing me to step up and leave the team mid-season.

"I’m excited to kick things off with Arkea which seems like a great team and one that also has a really good race programme too.

"The hard racing on rolling terrain in France will suit me,” he added. “I’m sure it’s going to develop me more as a rider and I’m keen to learn from the more experienced riders."

Contents of former high-end bike retailer Ubyk's stores go up for auction in North Lincolnshire, and 'jaws dropped' at the prices...

auction hammer gavel

This morning Ubyk's liquidated stock, apparently worth over a quarter of a million pounds, went up for auction in North Lincolnshire. Details of the items were given on the CJM Assets website, including some rather interesting descriptions from folk we assume aren't too used to seeing high-end bikes and gear in the auction room: "Jaws dropped at the Eddisons CJM auction room in Scunthorpe when one small box was found to contain a lightweight bike seat . . . weighing in at just two ounces . . . that came with a price tag of £407 attached.

"The auction has been ordered following the collapse of Oxford and Brighton-based Ubyk, one of the country’s poshest independent cycling retailers."

We think the 'bike seat', unusually weighed in ounces rather than grams (two ounces is about 57g), is actually from US saddle specialists Dash, as Ubyk were known to be one of the only UK stockists of the brand. Auctioneer Paul Cooper said: “I have to say the seat did cause a lot of comment. It is featherlight, quite remarkable, but who pays £450 of their own money on a bike saddle? If I was that worried about weight I would get on a diet for a few days – but I suppose the riders who want this sort of thing have already done that!”

Thanks for that assessment Paul. There were also Parlee bikes and Cippolini frames for sale, worth in excess of £10,000 at full RRP. Cooper helpfully reminds us: "They’re hand built, carbon fibre, with Zipp carbon wheels, although you don’t get pedals at that price. They’re extra".

The auction was set to close at midday today. We'll be scouring the interweb to see if anyone managed to pick up any 'bargains' this afternoon...

It's the Slovakian's 18th career stage victory at the week-long race, the first two coming way back in 2010 when he was aged just 20 and rode for Liquigas-Doimo.

Wiggins sticks his oar in, saying Viviani DQ "a bit harsh"

A post shared by Sir Wiggo (@bradwiggins) on

Not his rowing oar this time, rather Sir Wiggo gave his tuppence worth on Viviani's relegation at yesterday's Giro stage in an Instagram video, saying he thought the decision was harsh: "The move was erratic and stopped the other fella from pedalling, but I don't think the other fella was ever going to get round him.

"A lot of those finishes in the Giro, the way they're barriered (sic) and stuff, it's never a straight line, it's never a simple case of like a 100m race on an athletics track where everyone's got their lane. This is at the end of 200-odd kilometres."

Molano suspended for 'seemingly unusual physiological results'

1_Etapa-Vuelta_a_Colombia_2018-Ciclista_Sebastian_Molano_Ganador_Etapa via WikiCommons

UAE Team Emirates have suspended their own rider, 24-year-old Juan Sebastian Molano after the Colombian returned 'seemingly unusual physiological results'.

He was Fernando Gaviria's lead-out rider in yesterday's Giro d'Italia Stage 3 which his fellow countryman won after Italian National Champion Elia Viviani was relegated for irregular sprinting. UAE Team Emirates said in a press release:

"After tests performed under the Team’s strict and sophisticated internal monitoring system, UAE Team Emirates announces that some seemingly unusual physiological results have come back for the rider Juan Sebastian Molano. Following Team policy concerning the protection of our athletes’ health, the Colombian will be suspended to undergo further testing in the following weeks, in collaboration with the UCI, as we try to determine the cause of these unusual results. In order to protect the right to privacy, no further information regarding the matter will be released until results from the necessary tests come back."

"Like sitting on the indoor trainer for 7 hours" - Cavendish survives brutal Tour of California stage as he continues on comeback trail

Cavendish refuses to be beat as he continues on his quest to return to form following a long illness with the Epstein-Barr virus, and yesterday he managed to finish inside the cut-off on the brutally hot and hilly 215km stage to Lake Tahoe. He ended up finishing 36 minutes down on the winner Kasper Asgreen of Deceuninck-QuickStep.

Beckham switches to more sustainable mode of transport

Perhaps a tad ironic considering he got his six month ban for using a mobile phone while driving in Central London, but Becks doesn't appear too down about not being able to use his motor after sharing clips on Instagram Stories of himself and his four children out for a bike ride in Holland Park.

It was reported earlier this month that Beckham was spotted in Great Portland Street driving his Bentley with a mobile phone in hand, by a passer-by who originally wanted to take a photo but ended up shopping him to the police. Beckham also received a £750 fine, and has apparently been spotted hitching lifts of his son Brooklyn since the ban started.

Moreno Moser announces retirement aged just 28

#cycling #procycling #bikerace #bikeshots #news #nippovinifantinifaizanè #nippovinifantini #moser #cyclone

A post shared by Moreno Moser (@morenomoser) on

Moser won the Strade Bianche in 2013, and has announced his retirement after being unable to reignite his career on the pro continental circuit with Nippo–Vini Fantini–Faizanè. He says (according to our translation): "For years, I have been finding myself after months and months of training. I held on, tried again for years, every year with the confidence that it would be a good year. Then came Pelosi's call to Nippo-Vini Fantini, where I found an incredible family and stimuli that gave me the certainty that it would be the year of change. But I found myself still there, not on the ground, but under the ground.

"In this moment of my life I can no longer remain in cycling as in a comfort zone, dragging myself around the races scraping a barrel that maybe has been empty for a while. I will look for new experiences, new stimuli and the feeling of being alive again. Cycling is a magnificent, clean sport that has given me so much, maybe everything."

Utrecht tops global cycling cities index, Bristol leads UK

$

New research ranking cities around the world on cycle-friendliness puts Utrecht in the Netherlands top of the list, with neither Amsterdam nor Copenhagen making the top three – while Bristol, in 17th place, is the leading British city.

Compiled by German insurer Coya, the 2019 Bicycle Cities Index rates 90 cities on a number of criteria including theft and casualty rates, investment in infrastructure, percentage of people cycling, bike share availability and initiatives such as car free day and participation in Critical Mass to produce an overall ranking.

Utrecht came out top by a long way, with a total score of 77.84, followed in second place on 66.15 by Munster, one of seven German cities to make the top 20. Third was Antwerp in Belgium, followed by Copenhagen and Amsterdam, although there was very little between their respective scores.

There is one big caveat, however, which is that the research does not seek to establish a definitive list of the best cities for cycling – as Coya points out, “90 cities were selected for their willingness to invest and work on initiatives to improve cycling infrastructure and safety.

“The study does not reflect the best and worst cities for cycling, but rather evaluates the cycling climate for these 90 cities based on factors related to bike-users.”

That helps explains why Cambridge – which one might expect to at least figure somewhere on a ranking of this type and perhaps lead other British cities – doesn’t feature; it simply wasn’t chosen.

Besides Bristol, the other two places here that were chosen were Edinburgh, which was ranked 53rd overall, and London, which came 62nd.

Also missing from the list is Groningen, widely seen in the Netherlands and beyond as perhaps the best city for cycling on the planet.

You can find the full ranking and methodology here, and it is possible to toggle individual criteria to see which cities come out best (or worst) for individual factors.

For example, Singapore was assessed as having the lowest levels of bike theft and Johannesburg the highest, while for the overall infrastructure score, Geneva topped the list while Lagos came bottom.

Coya says: “As digital insurance specialists and committed bikers ourselves, we firmly believe that cyclists should be free to get from A to B, without having to worry about road quality, safety or bicycle theft.

“To delve into the topic further, we decided to investigate which cities around the world are improving their overall cycling conditions, as well as encouraging bicycle-usage as a healthy, sustainable mode of transport.

“We then ranked each location's efforts to determine the best cycling cities, as, after all, we believe that the road to future mobility is on two wheels.”

Alessandro Petacchi interviewed (© Simon MacMichael).jpg

UCI investigating Alessandro Petacchi for blood doping, Italian denies allegations

Alessandro Petacchi is the biggest name from cycling so far to be linked to the Austro-German blood doping investigation codenamed Operation Aderlass, and is one of four individuals the UCI has today confirmed are under investigation for potential anti-doping rule violations.

The Italian, who retired in 2015, is being investigated for alleged doping in 2012 and 2013, when he rode for Lampre.  His leadout man there was Danilo Hondo, who on Sunday admitted his involvement in the blood doping ring.

The other three people who, like Petacchi, have been provisionally suspended, are ex-pro Borut Bozic, now assistant sports director at Bahrain Merida, the team’s rider Kristijan Koren, who had been racing at the Giro d’Italia, and the UAE Team Emirates rider Kristijan Durasek.

Petacchi was linked yesterday by French newspaper Le Monde and Italy’s Corriere della Sera to Mark Schmidt, the former Gerolsteiner and Milram team doctor at the centre of Operation Aderlass, which hit the headlines after arrests were made at February’s Nordic Skiing World Championships.

He denied having undergone illegal blood transfusions, saying: “I found out from you that this Mark Schmidt was team doctor at Milram when I ride for them [2006-08]. Maybe he treated the German athletes: I’ve never seen or met him. I’ve never been to his clinic, in Germany or elsewhere. I’ve never had a blood transfusion. And I have no idea of the reason why my name may appear in this dossier.”

Regarding his former team-mate, Petacchi said: “I’ve always considered Hondo a friend, we exchanged messages wishing each other well just a few months ago and there’s no reason for a vendetta. I really don’t know how to explain such a huge falsehood.”

More doping suspensions hit the Giro

Kristjan_Koren_-_Critérium_du_Dauphiné_2012_-_Prologue_(cropped)

Kristijan Koren will not start today's Giro stage after the UCI published more potential Anti-Doping Rules Violations following the Aderlass investigation.

This is all linked to the case where a skier was caught in the middle of a blood transfusion and it's already implicated several pro cyclists and some managers.

Koren, who rides for Bahrain Merida, finished 2'47" behind yesterday's winner. He'll be joined on the naughty step by Bahrain Merida Sports Director Borut Bozic, though his sanction seems to have been from when he was a rider, not during his time in management.

More to follow.

The CPA are calling for media and team motorbikes to keep their distance from riders in pro races

It's not just the public concerned with close passes it seems, as the CPA (Cyclistes Professionnels Associes) have announced that riders have brought it to their attention that motorbikes, especially those from the media, are getting up too close to the action. The president of the CPA Gianni Bugno sayds: "The safety of our girls and our boys is fundamental, same as the correct execution of the race. The competitive result must be as fair as possible, it cannot be compromised by drawings, which, even if for few seconds can affect the regular development of the event. The riders themselves are asking the motorcyclists, especially those from the TV, to stay at a greater distance from them, whether they are ahead in or in pursuit. The technology we now have at our disposal allows excellent quality shots even at a greater distance than that what, unfortunately, is becoming habitual. We demand greater attention to this intolerable problem, which creates risks for the safety of the athletes, influences the development of the competitions and jeopardises the real value of the athletes."

There is a UCI Security Commission meeting in June where the UCI will bring up the campaign, saying they will push vehemently for stricter rules to be put in place to avoid collisions such as the nasty example above.

Edinburgh anti-cycling campaigner kicked out of council meeting for making bizarre claim that cycle route will “asphyxiate Ruth Davidson’s baby”

Councillors in Edinburgh are distancing themselves from a rogue former Labour Party member who sent a press release around the meeting titled: "Edinburgh Council plans to asphyxiate Ruth Davidson's baby."

Culprit Pete Gregson is currently suspended from the Labour Party for allegedly expressing support for a known Holocaust denier (sounds like a lovely bloke so far) and regularly pedals the opinion that a proposed cycle route expansion through the Roseburn area of the city will increase air pollution - this was his motivation for the ridiculous attack on the leader of the Scottish Conservative Party and her baby boy.

As if his non-existent grasp of GCSE science wasn't enough to get him thrown out, Gregson was finally removed from the meeting by transport and environment convener, Councillor Lesley Macinnes, who called the comments “utterly shameful”, reports The Scotsman. As he was ejected, Gregson shouted  “please let baby Finn live” and “watch out for the future, folks”.

While this was an utterly appalling attack on Ms Davidson and her family, in a separate issue altogether she has actually been criticised by pro-cycling campaigners recently for having a dig against the SNP for proposing a parking tax levy on those who drive to work. The first reply to her Twitter post (below) reads: “Thanks for the heads up, I’ve responded with my enthusiastic support for the levy.”

Madison Genesis have just announced that Jon Dibben will join the British squad after Connor Swift left to join Arkéa Samsic.
Speaking on Madison Genesis' website, Dibben said

"I’m really grateful to Roger for bringing me in and I’m excited to get back racing.

It’s probably the most solid team from a UK-perspective for the whole package. With Roger there and the history, it’s a good team to come into and continue to progress."

Team boss Roger Hammond seems rather pleased to have the ex-World Tour rider on the team.

"The difficult transfer market has given us the opportunity to secure Jon – a rider with World Tour winning ability. That experience is invaluable and is something that the rest of the team can really benefit from.

We’ve had Connor move on and that has opened up a gap for someone with that similar kind of ability to step into the team – someone who is quick at the end of races and has the ability to finish races off."

The race leader at the Tour de France will wear a unique yellow jersey each day to celebrate its 100th anniversary

yellow jersey 100 years.PNG

From stage 2 through to stage 21, this year at the end of each stage the general classification leader will wear a unique yellow jersey. Made in France by Le Coq Sportif, images to appear on the jerseys will include The Atomium in Brussels, Reims Cathedral, the Lion of Belfort, the Place du Capitole in Toulouse and Eugène Christophe. The stage 21 jersey will fittingly feature the Arc de Triomphe. Race director Christian Prudhomme said: "The jerseys are unique this year because each jersey is different and features either the race routes or the champions that have contributed to the history of the Tour de France. We will leave from Brussels where the first Yellow Jersey will feature the Atomium, the last will feature the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées, while others will feature a portrait of Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain for example. It will be something really special for the 100th anniversary of the Yellow Jersey."

Tejay van Garderen misses turn after borrowing teammate's bike

Van Garderen borrowed Aussie teammate Lachlan Morton's bike after reportedly snapping a chain, only to miss a turn because he couldn't get used to Morton's front brake right/rear brake left set-up favoured by us here in the UK. Controversially Van Garderen was awarded the same field time as those up ahead involved in a huge crash 3km from the finish, even though he wasn't directly impacted by it at the time.

Tour of California: crazy end to stage as Tejay van Garderen keeps overall lead, Sagan fined

The stage was won by Fabio Jakobsen of Quick-Step, but there was plenty of drama with 3km to go as a mass pile-up saw GC contenders caught up in the melee. Overall leader Tejay van Garderen lost time and his yellow jersey initially due to a mechanical further back but, after plenty of deliberation, stayed in the lead as all riders affected in any way by the crash were given field time.

Peter Sagan was fined for 'failure to respect instructions of the organiser'.

Sidi customers in USA warned of delays to orders after F16 fighter jet crashes into warehouse

The USA distributir of Italian cycling shoe firm Sidi has warned customers to expect delays to their orders after a US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon jet crashed into its warehouse in California.

Fortunately, only minor injuries were sustained by the pilot, who ejected before impact, and 12 people on the ground, reports ABC News.

The incident happened at around 3.45pm local time outside March Air Force Reserve Base, which lies to the east of Los Angeles in Riverside County, the 11th most populous county in the United States.

The brand’s distributor, Ciclista America, said on the SIDI Cycling USA Instagram account: “Unfortunately, this was our warehouse that was crashed into.

“We will not be able to ship any orders until Monday as the staff was evacuated.

“The good news is everybody was able to get out safely and the pilot is ok. We're sorry [for] any issues this may cause.”

Jeff Schoffstall, who works at another company based at the same complex, vehicle customisers Ride Right Designs, posted pictures of the aftermath of the crash to Facebook.

The plane, which was carrying live armaments, was based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and was taking part in an air defence mission as part of an operation launched following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

“The NORAD alert aircraft was flying with a standard armament configuration as part of its Operation Noble Eagle commitments," a Department of Defense official said.

The nature of the ordnance the F16 was carrying has not been disclosed for operational reasons, but given the mission it was engaged in s believed likely to have comprised air-to-air missiles.

The official added that the "armament has been secured and will be disposed of in accordance with Air Force policies and regulations."

Fortunately, the aircraft did not explode on impact, although the crash did cause significant structural impact to the warehouse. A small fire that broke out was quickly extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system.

“Unlawfully detained” – NYC cyclists (but not drivers) kettled on bridge’s bike path as Trump motorcade passes below

New York City cyclists riding over the Queensboro Bridge, which spans the East River to link Manhattan with Queens, were held by police and secret service officers on Friday morning to let President Donald Trump pass on the roadway below.

Drivers using the upper-deck lanes adjacent to the bike path on the two-tier structure – also known as the 59th Street Bridge, made famous by Simon & Garfunkel – were not subjected to similar treatment, reports Streetblog in a comprehensive report that you can find here.

That led some cyclists who had been told they faced delays of up to 45 minutes to hoist their bikes over the guardrail and mix it with motor vehicles, with one commuter and cycling campaigner saying, “We felt we were being unlawfully detained — and unjustly because it was about our mode of transport.”

Wiggins chips in on Campenaerts saying a Sky mechanic would have lost their job (and we look back at his own TT bike change disaster)

Sir Bradley Wiggins has chipped in on the discussion of the botched bike change yesterday that almost certainly cost Lotto-Soudal’s Victor Campenaerts victory at the Stage 9 time trial at the Giro d’Italia, saying on his Eurosport podcast that if it had happened to a Team Sky rider, it would have cost the mechanic his job.

Wiggins is eminently qualified to comment on yesterday’s misfortune for the Belgian, who last month broke his UCI Hour record – you may recall that riding in the colours of Great Britain, he had his own bike change disaster in a high-profile time trial a decade ago.

Still in the hunt for the bronze medal at the 2009 UCI Road World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland, where Fabian Cancellara powered to victory on home roads, Wiggins fell victim to a mechanical on the final lap.

In his report for the Guardian at the time, William Fotheringham described how the British rider, who would finish 21st, “was unable to get a rapid bike change because his car had been held up behind riders who were following him on the course.

“Clearly livid, he threw his bike down in disgust and was left standing by the roadside, with one sympathetic Swiss fan tapping him on the shoulder,” Fotheringham added. “It cannot have cheered him up in the slightest: his race was over in the cruellest possible way.”

Thomas de Gendt's Strava file shown he put out a massive 419 watts for the course, topping out at 773 watts... And that was only good enough for 18th place.

The highest-placing rider we could find who made a Strava upload was Ben O'Connor of Team Dimension Data, who finished 17th. He rode the 5km climb section at an average of 423 watts, and averaged 397 watts overall.

Feather Cycles celebrates 10th birthday with ride-out in July

Feather_Bike

Feather Cycles has been producing some of the finest and most beautifully crafted bikes for the last 10 years and to mark this milestone the York-based company is having a day of celebration on 27th July. “The first ten years of Feather Cycles has been amazing. I’ve been lucky to be supported by some fantastic customers who have been super fun to work with on some really interesting projects.” Ricky further added, “These celebrations are an opportunity for me to say thank you to those who have supported me as well to show how far the business has come in 10 years,” says founder Ricky Feather. There’ll be a nice 40 mile ride followed by pizza and drinks, and the celebrations includes workshop tours and screening of short films featuring bikes made by Feather. Rapha will be producing a special 10th anniversary jersey and shorts available to pre-order at the event as well as t-shirts. “I really cannot wait to see all the Feather bikes together in one place and see so many old and new friends,” adds Ricky, “This promises to be a really fun filled day which I’m really excited about.”

Victor Campenaerts bike change catastrophe costs him TT stage win

If you ever find yourself in a position where you need to switch bikes on a time trial, however rare a situation that is, this is exactly not how to do it. The new hour record holder estimated that the bike change fiasco cost him at least 30 seconds, and surely would have won the stage if the catalogue of errors hadn't had occurred. Following a mechanical he swapped to a road bike for the climb, and his team mechanic attempted to give him a helpful shove before he’d managed to swing his leg over the top tube and get in the saddle. The mechanic's push wasn't exactly effective, and a fan then took over to give Campenaerts an extra bit of momentum.

Flying doctors (based in Australia but from UK) break round--the world tandem record

Two British doctors based in Australia have set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest round-the-world tandem ride, though – in common with solo riders circumnavigating the globe – they experienced some unexpected hazards along the way, including an encounter with a bear in Russia and being robbed at knifepoint in Mongolia.

Lloyd Collier and Louis Snellgrove, who work as A&E doctors in Townsville, Queensland, finished their ride around the globe in Adelaide last Thursday, 283 days after they had set off, breaking the previous record by seven days – subject to ratification by Guinness World Records – and raising money for neurology research.

Pascal Ackermann after Giro d'Italia Stage 10 crash

Giro d'Italia Stage 10: Demare wins as crash takes out Ackermann

Groupama-FDJ’s Arnaud Demare has won Stage 10 of the 2019 Giro d’Italia in Modena this afternoon after a short, stage across the flat roads of the Po Valley that, as expected, came down to a bunch sprint. Valerio Conti of UAE Team Emirates retains the race leader’s maglia rosa.

The Frenchman outsprinted Elia Viviani of Deceuninck-Quick Step to take victory, while behind a big crash took out a number of riders including one of the favourites for the stage today, Pascal Ackermann of Bora-Hansgrohe.

As racing resumed following yesterday’s rest day, the 145-kilometre stage from Ravenna was raced mainly at a sedate pace, the speed only picking up inside the final 20 kilometres.

By that time, a two man break comprising Luca Covili of Bardiani-CSF and Nippo-Vini Fantini’s Sho Hatsuyama had long been caught ahead of what for once was not a highly technical finish to the stage, with the final bend coming 2 kilometres from the line.

CCC’s Fran Ventoso tried to spring a surprise from 3 kilometres out, but he was caught inside the closing kilometre, just as the crash that cost Ackermann the chance to contest the win happened.

Indoor cycle lane claimed to be first of its kind to open in Singapore mall

When the Funan mall opens in June, visitors will be able to cycle on a 200 metre-long path that runs through and around it. The Straits Times report that the path will have LED's that light up whenever it detects movement, and will mostly serve working professionals who cycle to their office during morning peak hours. During the mall's shopping hours between 10am and 10pm, however, cyclists will be encouraged to dismount.

It's claimed to be a "first-of-its-kind indoor cycling path"; we're not sure if that means in the entire world or not, but we don't know of any other examples. If you do, feel free to let us know in the comments...

British Cycling and HSBC give bikes to children in Birmingham (picture ctedit British Cycling)

British Cycling and HSBC give 600 free bikes to underprivileged kids in Birmingham

British Cycling and HSBC have begun distributing 600 free bikes to underprivileged kids in Birmingham with the help of Birmingham and West Midlands cycling and walking champion, the former BMX and track cycling world champion Shanaze Reade.

Under the scheme, which is being delivered by The Active Wellbeing Society, children will also receive a bike a bike pump.

Reade said: "Initiatives like this are fundamental to ensuring that children – regardless of who they are or where they come from - are given the opportunity to learn how to cycle.

“It’s easy to forget that a lot of kids simply don’t have access to a bike and schemes like this help to break down these barriers and ensure that cycling is something that can be enjoyed by all, no matter what your background.

“There are so many benefits to riding a bike – from physical and mental health, to the environment – and by providing hundreds of free bikes and equipment to children across the city, HSBC UK and British Cycling are contributing towards a healthier, fitter and greener nation which is something that should be applauded.”

Old Street Roundabout impression

London's Old Street roundabout switches to two-way traffic next week

London's Old Street roundabout will switch to two way traffic next week as part of the overhaul of one of the capital's most dangerous junctions by Transport for London (TfL) and the boroughs of Islington and Hackney.

Nick Fairholme, TfL’s Director of Project and Programme Delivery, said: “Our work at Old Street will transform journeys for thousands of people in the area and make it much easier and safer to walk, cycle and use public transport.

The road layout will switch to two-way traffic from 0001 on Monday morning.

"The switch to two-way traffic is a major milestone for the scheme and some road closures and changes to travel are needed for work to progress. I’d encourage everybody in the area to take extra care as traffic gets used to the new road layout.”

RoadPeace campaign co-ordinator, Victoria Lebrec, commented: “I’m really pleased to hear that works to Old Street roundabout are starting.

"The current layout is unsafe and we’ve seen some really horrible collisions happen there over the last few years.

"People walking and cycling should not feel like they are taking their lives into their hands when travelling through Old Street.

"At RoadPeace we see the devastation that road danger causes, and welcome TfL’s commitment to addressing it.”

Dogma F12 Red and Black RIM

Pinarello’s Dogma F12 goes on a diet

Just a short while after launching the latest Dogma F12, Italian company Pinarello has unveiled the even lighter Dogma F-12 X-Light and Dogma F12 Disk X-Light via the UCI’s list of approved equipment.

We don’t have any details about these new bikes yet, but we have asked. All bike companies that want their bikes used by WorldTour professionals must pay to get their bikes approved by the UCI, and this process means new bikes often get revealed ahead of any planned marketing material by the company.

With the last Dogma F10 X-Light, the frame was 60g lighter than the regular model due to using a higher grade of carbon fibre with a lower resin content, along with a new layup and new dedicated moulds. Could we see similar weight savings on the F12 Dogma X-Light?

The new bikes were only just approved on the 17th May 2019. More details when we get them.

"What is the point?" - Jeremy Vine records another dangerous close pass

The presenter and broadcaster has published enough criminal driving for a feature length film over the years on social media, and his latest involves a lorry that overtakes him on Shaftesbury Avenue as a bus and a van are coming the other way. Vine then catches up with the lorry at a later junction, who appears to have saved all of no seconds by making the dangerous manoeuvre. No word on identification of the driver yet, but the plate appears to be visible from the footage.

Still some in the comments tried to suggest that the incident could have been avoided, with the one above being particularly unpopular.

Giro d'IItalia Stage 11: Caleb Ewan wins in Fausto Coppi's home town

Caleb Ewan of Lotto-Soudal has won Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia in Novi Ligure today, the last but one sprint stage of this year’s edition, with the race heading into the Alps tomorrow. It’s the Australian’s second stage win of this year’s race. Valerio Conti of UAE Team Emirates retains the overall lead.

As yesterday the break – today comprising three home riders, each representing one of the Italian UCI Professional Continental teams with wild card invitations to the race – was swept up early, with the catch made with 25 kilometres remaining of the 221-kilometre stage from Carpi.

For the second day running, it was a pan-flat stage, today running from west to east along the Po Valley, with the final 40 or so kilometres taking in roads raced in the early part of Milan-San Remo as the peloton heads towards the Passo del Turchino and, beyond it, the Ligurian Coast.

That race was won three times by Fausto Coppi, whose home town of Novi Ligure provided the stage finish today and il Campionissimo will also be remembered tomorrow by a stage that starts and finishes in the same two towns – Cuneo and Pinerolo – as the stage he won by almost 12 minutes after a solo break on his way to winning the 1949 Giro.

Result and reaction to follow.

Luke Rowe leaves Twitter after being called a white supremacist...

Screenshot 2019-05-22 at 09.35.57

Ever since Team Sky began winning bike races, their riders have come in for a lot of abuse on Twitter. It seems enough is enough for Welshman Luke Rowe who has waved goodbye to the trolls after being accused of being a white supremacist.

D63nfdMW0AEu1QW

Rowe was pictured with on the Team Ineos camper van with his teammates. The gesture that he's making with his left hand is a classic schoolboy prank where anyone caught looking at it got a punch on the arm. This prank, known as the circle game, has been around since the 80s and featured on Malcolm in the Middle.

The 'OK' gesture as it's commonly known hit headlines after users of forum 4chan started using it on social media. "The Boston Globe reported that users on 4chan's /pol/ (Politically Incorrect) board were instructed in February 2017 to 'flood Twitter and other social media websites...claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy,' as part of a campaign dubbed 'Operation O-KKK'".

So, is Luke Rowe a white supremacist? No.

Deery me... Olympian Stuart Hayes hit by deer in Richmond Park

Being taken out by a deer while cycling is the stuff of nightmares, and last night the latest victim was former pro triathlete and coach Stuart Hayes. Two hours ago he updated his Twitter followers saying he's waiting for a CT scan, but hopefully he will make a speedy recovery.

Hayes competed in the London 2012 Olympics, where he played a domestique roll on the swim and bike legs to pave the way for Alistair Brownlee to take the gold medal. He is now a coach at Team Dillon coaching with his wife Michelle Dillon, also a former pro.

Friends of Richmond Park initially reported the incident as, “cyclist learns the hard way that deer are wild animals and therefore unpredictable.”

They’ve since had a rethink and edited that.

Campenaerts unimpressed by Wiggins' suggestions that a move to Team Ineos would be beneficial, saying "well we broke his f**king hour record didn't we?"

Victor_Campenaerts_Ridley_Arena_TT_15.jpg

On Wiggins' latest podcast, he claimed that Victor Campenaerts would be better off moving to a team like Ineos from Lotto Soudal to get the best out of himself. Wiggins said: "He's in a Belgian team, the biggest Belgian team (Lotto Soudal, although we'd argue Deceuninck-Quick Step might dispute that) that's still acting like it's 1974.

"If he went to Sky (meaning Team Ineos), he'd see the difference. What will happen is that they will offer him loads of money, he'll sign for three years and he'll stay there. It's like you could be so much more, Victor!"

In an interview with Sporza yesterday, Campenaerts admitted he was puzzled by Wiggins' comments, particularly as he's yet to sign anything for next season with Lotto Soudal:

"I don’t know anything about this, I’ll have to discuss that with John (Lelangue, the team manager)."

"Well, I’ve obviously just read and seen it, what can I say. He doesn’t seem to understand the workings of our team. We’ve fucking broke his hour record haven't we?

"They (Lotto Soudal) might appear to be more like a traditional team, however there’s a lot of progress been made when it comes to time trials. Since I’ve arrived and with Kevin de Weert we’ve made big advances. Not only for me but for the whole team and the hour record is proof of this.

The interviewer then asked Campenaerts specifically what he thought of Wiggins' belief that he has more success in him: "I hope that this is effectively true and I’ll try to get more out of myself. But I think that what I’ve shown thus far has been very promising. If you compare this to the other riders, with the exception of Roglič, it’s been good. And performing like this I can see myself winning against him."

Campenaerts added that there would be time for contract talks later in the year, and for now he's simply focussed on the upcoming Giro d'Italia time trial in Verona.

*A huge thanks to Dutch-speaking road.cc readers Jeroen Geut and Elmar Becker for translating the Sporza interview for us!

Holland Park Avenue cycleway will result in MORE trees in the area, not fewer

Yesterday, Jeremy Clarkson was among those suggesting that a planned cycleway on Holland Park Avenue in London would see a number of trees chopped down.

A lot of people think this. There’s a ‘save the trees’ petition on change.org.

London’s cycling commissioner, Will Norman, concedes that two big trees will be chopped down – “neither in good condition” – but says that more trees will be planted than will be taken out.

Then there’s the whole ‘making the area a bit safer’ aspect on top of that.

Pedal like a Movistar pro with new Fizik Vento Powerstrap R1 shoes

Fizik is launching its new Vento Powerstrap R1 Movistar Team racing shoes on the 7th June so you can get that pro look. They’ll cost £224.99.

VENTO-POWERSTRAP-R1-movistar-light-blue_top

They first debuted in the Tour Down Under earlier this year and are being worn by the Movistar Team and Movistar Women Team riders throughout the 2019 racing calendar

The shoes use a new twin Velcro strap arrangement, the lower one crossing the foot twice. This Powerstap design is claimed to provide a more secure fit with a great range of customisation.

They’re also very light thanks to a full unidirectional carbon fibre sole and lightweight fabrics.

VENTO-POWERSTRAP-R1-movistar-light-blue_side

If you like the look of the shoes but are wondering if any other colours are available, you’re flat out of luck I’m afraid, as this Movistar colour is the only option.

“Like all equipment at the level we race, we all need to totally rely on our shoes – to be comfortable, predictable, and always perform as we need, whatever the race, the time of day, the effort, the incline. The Vento R1s just suit me beautifully. I put them on, and I forget all about them,” says Movistar Team’s Mikel Landa.

“The popularity of this new shoe with the Movistar Team riders led us to look at producing them for general sale to the public,” added Carlo Maria Ferrero, fizik’s Marketing and Communications Manager.

“We always like to give our athletes the choice of the best equipment and it’s an interesting experience to discover what suits which rider – it’s part of our ongoing feedback and development program. We ask them to try different shoes and stick with what works for them.

“It’s a generalisation, because everyone’s different, but there’s a consensus that some riders prefer the new Vento Powerstrap R1 because of the predictable practicality, while others may prefer the Infinito R1’s double-Boa closure system so they can easily tighten mid-ride for intense effort. Whatever shoes each rider prefers, we wish them the best of luck this year.”

Rapha has launched a new commuter backpack

Rapha has launched a new backpack aimed to meet the demands of commuting cyclists.

Rapha_Commuter_Bag SS19_27

The Roll Top Backpack is made from tough hard-wearing fabrics, the roll top opening provides large access to the contents and is secured by a retractable clip. A single loop of webbing over the front provides a handy place to hang light and locks. The back panel features three padded panels to provide comfort and prevent too much heat buildup, and the straps are similarly padded.

Visibility is a big concern when battling through busy streets on the commute so Rapha has given the backpack reflective tabs on the straps and the entire bottom panel is reflective.

Rapha_Commuter_Bag SS19_47

Luggage capacity is 15 litres and extends to space for a 15” laptop inside a dedicated padded sleeve, and there are smaller pockets for essentials and an external pocket. Pink lining inside the main compartment apparently makes it easier to locate things.

One neat detail is the base which ensures the backpack will stand up without falling over.

If you like what you see it’s available now from www.rapha.cc and costs £100.

London traffic jam (licensed CC BY 2.0 by Garry Knight on Flickr)

Uber data shows it might be quicker to walk

The INRIX 2018 Traffic Scorecard showed that in a number of UK cities the quickest way of getting about is by bike. It found that last-mile traffic speed in London is just 7mph.

It’s a growing trend. Last year The Telegraph concluded that the average speed of an urban driver will be less than that of a cyclist within a decade.

We’ve now got Uber data that suggests the same thing. In fact Forbes points out that in some areas driving is slower than walking.

The company has released Uber Movement Speeds, which shows that London motorists trying to get through Trafalgar Square rarely exceed 4mph, while those on Northumberland Avenue average 3mph.
