If you've got a couple of hours to kill this bank holiday in between your rides and catching up on the Giro, what better way than to fill the time up than watching one of these cycle-themed films and documentaries?

We've done a whip-round of the road.cc team and friends of the site and come up with our list of recommendations that are currently listed on Netflix, Sky Cinema (which you can also get via Now TV) and Amazon Prime Video. Enjoy!

Stop at Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story (2014)

Recounting the story behind what many regard as the biggest sporting fraud in history, this documentary explores how dastardly Lance duped the world and became an icon, only to eventually admit to being part of a doping program in 2013. Director Alex Holmes interviews former friends, colleagues and team members to reveal the full extent of the lies, bullying and cover-ups that went on during Armstrong's ascendancy from cancer survivor to seven-times Tour de France winner before the truth came out.
Available on Netflix

The Kid With a Bike (2011)

This touching French language film directed by the Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne tells the story of 11-year-old Cyril, who is abandoned by his father and left in care before befriending a local hairdresser. Not strictly about bikes, but the closing scene where Cyril rides away is certainly shocking and memorable.
Available on Sky Cinema

Icarus (2017)

A film that was originally going to be about director and amateur bike racer Bryan Fogel trying to get better at cycling through taking performance-enhancing drugs, only for him to happen across one of the biggest doping scandals the world has even known. This Oscar winner has to be seen to be believed...
Available on Netflix

100 Metros (2016)

Based on the true story of multiple sclerosis sufferer Ramón Arroyo, who was told he wouldn't be able to walk 100 metres after his diagnosis... to which Arroyo responded by completing an Ironman. Technically about triathlon, but obviously Ramon has to cycle a fair bit throughout the film.
Available on Netflix

Bicycle (2014)

Director and avid cyclist Michael B. Clifford tells the story of cycling in the UK, back where the modern bicycle was invented. It takes a humorous look at the sport of cycling, charting its Victorian origins up to the present day. Features cameos from Sir Dave Brailsford and Chris Boardman amongst other well-known faces.
Available on Amazon Prime Video

Pedal the World (2015)

It's pretty self-explanatory, but this documentary tells the story of Felix Starck's 18,000 kilometre journey through 22 countries as he pedals his way around the globe in 365 days. The whole doc was shot, directed, edited and produced by Felix himself.
Available on Netflix

Blood Road (2017)

Blood Road follows the journey of American ultra-endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch and her Vietnamese riding partner Huyen Nguyen, as they pedal 1,200 miles along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail through the dense jungles of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Their goal is to reach the site of where Rebecca's US Air Force pilot father was shot and killed in 1971, making the journey all the more poignant as she discovers how the Vietnam war shaped their lives along the way.
Available on Amazon Prime Video

Bicycle Thieves (1948)

This classic post-war Italian film tells centres around Antonio and his young son Bruno. Antonio is long-term unemployed but is elated when he finally finds work in Rome, only to get his bike stolen on his first day. Antonio and Bruno embark on a frantic search for the bike, that he needs more than anything in order to continue in work.
Bicycle Thieves regularly features in must-see lists, and was even named the greatest film of all time by Sight and Sound magazine in 1953.
Available soon on Sky Cinema, and on Youtube now for £1.99

Murder of Couriers (2014)

An unusual title and unusual subject matter, Murder of Couriers tells the story of a group of cycle couriers over a three year period. Some of the stars of the film tell how they escaped a life of crime and drug abuse by replacing it with the thrill of getting out on their bikes and getting paid for it...
Available on Amazon Prime Video

Want more space from overtaking drivers? Wear a hi-vis vest with an arrow, says study

$

Researchers in Canada have said that cyclists who wear high-visibility vests with an arrow pointing to the left results in motorists giving them more space when overtaking.

Academics at the University of British Columbia’s department of engineering gave cyclists participating in their study hi-vis vests from the brand ArroWhere with different designs, while some riders taking part did so without a vest.

> Review: ArroWhere Dark Waterproof Jacket

They wanted to establish the role communication played in cycle safety and whether it was of greater importance than visual aids such as lights.

Publishing their findings in the journal Sustainability, associate professor Gordon Lovegrove and co-author Takuro Shoji said that a hi-vis vest with an arrow pointing left [in the UK, the equivalent would be an arrow pointing right] was most effective.

"Vehicles passing VRU [vulnerable road user] test subjects wearing the arrow vest design showed more respect, and participants' perceptions generally agreed," they said in the study.

One of the reasons the study – claimed to be the first that examines how communication can help protect cyclists – was undertaken was to examine whether “be safe, be seen” style road safety campaigns worked.

Highlighting that the limited sample size meant the results should be treated with caution, the study said that they did suggest “that bicycle safety vests that provide for both conspicuity and communication appear to show promise.”

The authors continued: “’Be Safe, Be Seen’ is an important message, but is often interpreted as ‘The more you are seen, the better’. Some take this message too far and end up creating dangerous situations for themselves and others. For example, purchasing a bicycle light with 1000 lumens of power (car headlights average 700 lumens), aiming it at eye level, and putting it on strobe mode to ‘be seen’ is dangerous. It disorients oncoming drivers and cyclists and will increase the chances of accidents.

“The best chance for VRUs to enhance their own safety is to apply to themselves a message relevant to approaching motorists, visible but simple, and can be immediately understood in its meaning and applied functions. Of course, this ‘solution’ must also be practical and affordable for those using it. Current equipment and apparel with retroreflective material addresses visibility, affordability, and practicality, but does not convey a relevant message.

“The best possible message for a motorist to encounter on the road is one resembling a familiar road sign with universal symbols,” they added, saying that ArroWhere, which is based in Canada, “utilises the psychology of road signs and applies it to VRUs in attempts to enhance their safety on the road by considering both cyclist and motorist positions together.”

Fishing line stretched across popular Swansea bike path causes cyclist to fall from bike

A cyclist in Swansea has described how he came off his bike after riding into a fishing line stretched across a popular cycle route – and warned that had a child ridden into it, the consequences could have been much more serious.

Jonathan Ace, 38,  told Wales Online that his cycle helmet was cracked and he was left with “a banging headache” after the incident on the city’s promenade this morning.

He said: "I was just out for a general bike ride but fortunately at the time I was having water so I wasn't going flat out.

"It cracked my helmet and I was only going between 10 and 12mph. It's frightening if I had been going about 18 or 20mph it could have been a different story.

"The wire hit me on my chest and pushed me off the bike. There was fishing braid wrapped around my bike afterwards and it was all caught in the pedals and wheels.

"I've got scratch marks on the bike too. I had a banging headache after it and thought 'shall I just go home?' but I decided to just carry on."

"The wire would have been neck height on a child,” he added. "It's stupid. I don't understand what these people get out of it.

"I've fallen off to the side of the bike but if had been a child then they would have flipped over like a somersault.

"Where is the sense in these people doing it?"

South Wales Police have been notified of the incident.

Richard Carapaz in the maglia rosa (picture RCS Sport, LaPresse)

With five stages left, how will the Giro play out?

Another absorbing day in the mountains (read our report on Stage 16 here) brought the end game of the 102nd edition of the Giro d’Italia into sharper focus, with four stages left – one of those, on paper, unlikely to see major action in the overall – before Sunday’s relatively short, 17-kilometre time trial in Verona.

Before the weekend, Roglic was many people’s clear favourite for the overall, with the big question being whether any of his rivals would be able to take sufficient time out of him to maintain an advantage on the final day.

As things stand, the question is whether the Slovenian, his confidence rocked by a mechanical problem followed by a crash on the way into Como on Sunday, and losing more time today, will enter that closing stage with a realistic chance of overhauling riders in front of him.

Nibali, now 22 seconds in front of Roglic, would be a realistic target, assuming the Jumbo-Visma rider does not lose more time.

Carapaz, now 2 minutes 9 seconds up on the Slovenian, would be perhaps 30 or 40 seconds out of reach given their comparative results in both the time trials so far in the race, both of which Roglic won.

The other scenario to consider is how Carapaz will fare with the burden of leading a Grand Tour in its final week, a new experience for the Ecuadorian. His Movistar team have so far played a tactical blinder, though, and he has a superdomestique working for him in the shape of Mikel Landa, fourth overall.

Nibali – twice a Giro champion, and also a winner of the Tour de France and Vuelta – knows how to bide his time, however, as witnessed in the 2016 race when a victory on Stage 19 set him up to take the maglia rosa on the penultimate day.

It could well be that the race will only be settled in that final time trial in Verona – but right now, if we were putting money on it, we’d guess the tussle would be between Nibali and Carapaz, with Roglic having to settle for aiming for a hat-trick of victories against the clock.

Then again, this is the Giro – and as we saw last year, anything is possible in the closing days.

How the bike of Primož Roglič ended up on Movistar's team car (and a Jumbo-Visma rider ended up riding a Movistar bike)

This rare sight of a rival team rider's bike on another team's car happened thanks originally to a mechanical suffered by Primož Roglič, whose Bianchi is wracked up on the Movistar vehicle in the photo above. The odd sequence of events materialised on stage 15 when Roglič needed a new bike, so teammate Antwan Tolhoek gave him his because the Jumbo-Visma car was way back from the lead group, handing out drinks to riders in the main peloton.

Tolhoek was then left on the side of the road with Roglič' bike, so Movistar stepped in and gave the stricken rider one of their Canyon bikes to finish the stage. According to El Pais, the Movistar mechanic even swapped the Shimano pedals over for Tolhoek, as the Movistar bike was fitted with Look pedals. Movistar then loaded up the broken Bianchi onto their team car. So there you have it!

Latest online tabloid article about cyclists being targeted with tacks in the village of Badger could be the most vitriolic yet

Badger, Shropshire (via StreetView)

A right wing tabloid has took a break from reporting on the love life of the royals and scaring their readership about illegal immigrants to weigh in on a perceived conflict between cyclists and drivers in the Shropshire village of Badger (read our article about it here). The article is titled: "The village leaving lycra louts in a spin: Cycling clubs adore the idyllic lanes that run through an exclusive Shropshire village but one local is so fed up they are laying them with BOOBY TRAPS".
The article mentions how the village was a 'peaceful idyllic location' before a saboteur began laying tacks on the roads, presumably to deter cyclists from riding through. There is confusingly an interview with an anonymous local who claims cyclists are "clogging lanes by riding two or three abreast", yet in a later paragraph another anonymous resident accuses the cyclists of riding too fast downhill through the village.

Even more alarming is the comments section, in which the most liked ones include gems such as: "We're that sick of them in the village where I live that we use a mixture of sharp sand and gravel on the bends in the road", and: "Absolutely, ridiculous to put pins on the road... Should use landmines!", and:  "I want to just push them over and steal their bikes as they have no thought for any other road users."

We can only hope these particular keyboard warriors don't have driving licences, as it makes for quite worrying reading.

Olympian who was hit by deer in Richmond Park has his say in blog article

stuart hayes twitter.PNG

Stuart Hayes shattered his pelvis after being hit by a deer in Richmond Park last week - and was subject to abuse from some dark corners of the Internet after the Friends of Richmond Park Facebook page wrote "cyclist learns the hard way" to report on the incident, suggesting Hayes was at fault for riding too fast. His wife Michelle Dillon has since posted on Twitter to explain that the deer actually ran at Hayes and tried to avoid the deer, while he said himself on a blog post: "I received a lot of lovely messages which I really appreciated, however a charity decided to capitalise on the situation and use me to look like a bad example for cyclists and vent their anger towards all cyclists using Richmond Park. This particular post was all over social media and there were some hurtful comments in there and personal attacks which can really make you feel like crap when your laying in a hospital bed with a broken pelvis. However I tried not to get too wrapped up in it all because I wanted to focus my energy on getting better quickly, now I'm back home I can focus on the more important things and I'm hoping to be back training as soon as I can. Of course I have a lot of rehabilitation ahead of me and I'm sure I will learn a lot from this experience that I can only pass onto others, especially my athletes that I coach. You always learn the most from your own experiences."

Here's a very nice vid from Bombtrack (who sponsored this year's Dirty Reiver) featuring their Dutch cycle-cross pro, Gosse van der Meer as he tackles his first gravel race. As he says 200km of gravel plus over 3K metres of climbing is a bit different from the usual "full gas for an hour" efforts he's used to. No, need to worry though - as soon as you spot Gosse's well sculpted facial hair you know he's going to fit right it. Defo worth a watch if you want a flavour of what gravel racing looks like (from the front), you can get our more mortal perspective here - Gosse is good value, and it's especially worth watching to the end for an excellent bit of nutrition advice.

Woman’s stinging response to husband starting to shave his legs hits headlines

A woman’s response to her husband starting to shave his legs because he’s a “cyclist,” posted to Australia’s version of Mumsnet, has been picked up by the press there and abroad.

Writing on Kidspot, in an article since republished by outlets including news.com.au, Olivia Williams said: “You might think one’s husband going south of the border with a shaver is just the calling card of the modern man, but my husband went WAAAAY south. Deep south.”

The husband, apparently, did the deed while his wife was away for the weekend, having raised the matter with her previously and been left in no doubt what her opinion was.

She admitted that her husband is “certainly a few pedal strokes further up the proverbial mountain than the easily recognisable and much meme-ified MAMIL,” but added that “he has no need to be shaving off milliseconds from his Saturday morning ride time with a new-found penchant for personal grooming.

“My husband is in shape,” she continued. “He’s super fit. One might say he is like a younger, balder Lance Armstrong; minus the mountains of disgrace, disrepute, doping and tell-all Oprah interviews. So not like Lance Armstrong at all. But he’s the only cyclist I could name, and that’s the extent of my willingness to research the matter.”

Concluding her post, she wrote: “So, I made a deal with him. If he shaves his legs, I’m not gonna. But I took it up a notch. I’ll grow out my underarm hair until I can braid it. My landing strip will become the literal untaming of the shrew. My legs will rival the Belanglo State Forest in both the density of native vegetation and impenetrability.

“And he liked that idea about as much as I enjoyed feeling like I’d traded in my husband for an oiled-up Peter Andre, wrapped in a silken sheathe found in the props department of a Pantene commercial. Phew.

“That’s what I call a close shave.”

Want to keep your bones healthy? Go running, not cycling, says study

A new study claims that people should go running rather than cycling if they want to keep their bones healthy.

Researchers at the University of Mississippi found that 28 per cent of men aged 35-50 participating in the study had early signs of osteoporosis, compared to 26 per cent of women, reports Telegraph.co.uk.

Subjects were scanned to calculate their bone mineral density (BMD), which is thought to peak at age 30.

Lead researcher Dr Martha Bass said:“We typically associate loss of bone mineral density with post-menopausal women, but our findings showed elevated risk in younger men.

“Almost all participants who were found to have osteopenia were surprised and I think this is a more prevalent issue than anyone expected."

She added that weight-bearing exercise such as running was best for maintaining BMD, saying:  “calcium plays a larger role when bones are still developing. After that, the body begins to rely on weight-bearing exercises to keep bones strong. It really does boil down to use it or lose it.”

Austrian MTB rider Christina Kollmann-Forstner suspended for links to blood doping ring

The UCI has provisionally suspended Austrian mountain biker Christina Kollmann-Forstner after the former European champion and world championship silver medallist became the latest rider to be linked to the Operation Aderlass blood doping ring.

In a statement, world cycling’s governing body said:

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that it has notified the Austrian rider Christina Kollmann-Forstner of potential Anti-Doping Rule Violations (Use of Prohibited Method and Possession of Prohibited Method) based on information received from the law enforcement authorities of Austria in the context of the Operation Aderlass.

After review of all elements in its possession, the UCI has decided to provisionally suspend the rider with immediate effect pursuant to Article 7.9.3 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules.

Again, the UCI and the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF), the independent body mandated to define and lead the strategy on anti-doping testing and investigations in our sport, will continue to cooperate and assist all parties involved in the Aderlass investigation.

At this stage, the UCI will not comment any further on this matter.

Cyclists in US national park stranded after avalanche

13 cyclists in the Glacier National Park in Montana were stranded on Monday's Memorial Day public holiday following an avalanche.

Park staff had to clear a rockfall that had happened at a site the cyclists had already passed on the Going To The Sun Road then had to wait several hours for the snow to stabilise so they could begin to clear it.

Kelvin Tennant shooting scene (picture Victoria Police)

£275,000 reward offered to find gunman who shot cyclist and left him for dead

Police in Australia have offered a $500,000 (£275,000) reward for information identifying the person who shot a cyclist multiple times on Victoria’s Myrtleford-Everton Rail Trail in February 18, 2017.

Kelvin Tennant, aged 72, was shot in the chest and head and left for dead by his assailant. He was discovered by two passing cyclists and airlifted to hospital, and took months to recover from his wounds, reports ABC News.

Speaking of how the shooter departed the scene without making sure he was dead, Mr Tennant said: "I find that a bit strange. He obviously had no regard for my life. He wanted to kill me," he said.

"I've thought since that time why didn't he walk over and … put the gun to my head and finish the job.

"Whether he got spooked and left the scene very quickly or thought he'd finished me off I don't know, but I'm here today to talk about it."

"Kelvin was simply out enjoying riding his motorised bike along the rail trail when someone has tried to kill him," said Detective Inspector Dean Thomas of Victoria Police.

"At this stage we're unable to find any sort of motive. We've looked very, very hard at this, and worked tirelessly on it but unfortunately we cannot find a motive.

“We hope this reward can bring forward new information so we can find the person responsible and bring them before the courts."

HSBC UK cuts 90 per cent of staff car parking to encourage workers onto bikes

$

HSBC UK, which has sponsored British Cycling since 2017, is to cut 90 per cent of staff car parking spaces at two new regional centres in a bid to get employees cycling.

The Sunday Times reports that nine in ten of the 700 car parking spaces at offices in Sheffield and Birmingham will disappear.

Instead, the bank, which employs 34,000 people in the UK, is spending £3 million this year on initiatives such as bike parking and changing rooms at the sites.

The newspaper says that HSBC UK is also looking for 1,280 volunteers among its staff to sign up for the Cycle Nation Project, an academic study being run by Glasgow University and Edinburgh University.

The project aims to identify barriers to cycling and will also assess issues such as activities undertaken by employees, their motivation, cardiovascular health and absenteeism.

Ian Stuart, HSBC UK’s chief executive, said that at the Birmingham headquarters, “Nobody gets a car parking space unless they have a disability.

He added: “It won’t suit everyone and I understand that. I am not a fanatical cyclist. I don’t own Lycra.”

One employee at HSBC UK’s Sheffield offices told The Sunday Times that until his car parking space was taken away, he would drive less than two miles to go to the gym.

James Royal told the newspaper that he and his partner have now rethought plans to buy a second car and that he instead cycles the four miles to the office – something that has resulted in his journey time halving to 20 minutes.

Giro rider asks how many beers needed to replenish Calories after Saturday’s monster stage … a LOT is the answer

A Giro d’Italia rider asked on Twitter how any beers he needed to down to replace the Calories burnt in Saturday’s monster stage in the Dolomites … and the answer was one that would leave even the most hollow-legged of beer aficionados legless, never mind a cyclist at the end of a three-week Grand Tour.

“Today at the Giro I consumed 6,300 Calories,” wrote Groupama-FDJ rider, Jacopo Guarnieri.

“Can anyone tell me how many beers I need to drink to replenish?“

Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch suggested that Daniel Lloyd, who has been working for the channel during the race, might “know something about that.”

“14 x 330ml Duvels,” Lloyd shot back. “Then you’d have enough left over for a Bud Light, but I wouldn’t bother with that bit.”

“I’m gonna have a funny night, then,” replied Guarnieri.

Another response came from his former Astana team-mate Enrico Gasparotto, now riding for Dimension Data.

“More than you could manage, no doubt,” he said.

We’re not sure whether he took up Lloyd’s advice of downing a baker’s dozen plus one bottles of the 8.5 per cent ABV Belgian beer … but he finished 117th out of 142 riders in yesterday’s concluding individual time trial in Verona.

Ian To LEJOG record attempt (picture via Plejog on Twitter).jpg

Third time lucky? Ian To targets Land’s End-John O’Groats record again

Wiltshire ultracyclist Ian To will be having a fresh crack at the Land’s End to John O’Groats record in the coming weeks – and after two previous failed attempts, will be hoping it’s third time lucky.

No precise date has been set for his latest crack at the record – or rather, records, because he has no fewer than four in his sights.

Those are:

LEJOG Guinness World Record – 44 hours, 4 minutes and 20 seconds

(set 2001)

LEJOG Road Records Association Record – 43 hours, 25 minutes and 13 seconds (2018)

1000 Miles – 55 hours and 59 minutes (2001)

24 Hour Record – 507 miles (2018).

The Swindon Wheelers member is waiting for conditions to be just right – a weather forecast of dry, not to hot unlike last summer’s heatwave, and a decent enough tailwind to put that RRA record within reach would be ideal.

A crowdfunding page has been set up for the effort and is currently just over hallway past the £3,500 target.

We wish him all the best.

Hop it, hire bikes – POGO STICKS start-up enters the urban mobility market

Bike-share firms apparently have a new rival in the urban mobility market – with a Swedish start-up set to launch pogo stick hire operations in San Francisco and London.

According to a report – admittedly, one that is rather sceptical in tone – on SFist.com, Cangoroo plans to launch first in Malmo and Stockholm this summer, before going international.

The company’s CEO Adam Mikkelsen, who is adamant the company isn’t a hoax, says that "the existing players [in the micro-mobility market] are very generic when it comes to brand loyalty and making a statement."

We’re not sure what he’s on about, either.

Apparently, the business is owned by ODD Company, which may give a bit more insight into what’s going on – it’s a branding and communications agency that has previous in headline-grabbing stunts.

Spoof or straight up, it does strike us though that it’s a shame that the name Jump – the Uber-owned electric bike and scooter hire business that had its London launch last week – was already taken.

Amsterdam moped riders protest after being banned from cycle lanes

Moped riders in Amsterdam have been out protesting against a new law that forces them out of cycle lanes and also makes it compulsory for them to wear helmets, reports The Guardian.

According to the Guardian, nearly 50,000 people have backed a petition which says that making people on mopeds ride alongside faster-moving motor traffic will cause more collisions, while consultation on the new law received an unprecedented number of comments.

Despite a €95 fine, many are ignoring the law, with one woman riding her moped in a cycle lane saying: “It hasn’t been properly thought through.

“It’s very unclear when we are allowed on the bike lane and where we aren’t, and there are certain junctions where there’s just not enough space on the road. I find it absolutely terrifying.”

Amsterdam’s bicycle mayor, Katelijne Boerma, commented: “If there’s a lack of space – which is the case for cyclists – then people start behaving badly and the bike lanes and a lot of pavements in the centre for pedestrians have a kind of ‘surviving the jungle’ attitude.

“We all need to work on our fietsfatsoen, which is an old-fashioned word for courtesy. The taxi driver blames the cyclist, the tram driver blames the car driver … but at the end of the day traffic is all of us.”

Hunt updates gravel wheels range

Hunt has been busy updating its gravel wheels range with wider rims to support big tyres, and tougher freehub bodies.

Hunt 650B Adventre Sport 2019 - 1

The Mason X Hunt 650B Adventure Sport Disc wheelset (£319) has an updated rim with a 25mm internal width. It was 20mm previously. The external width is 29mm and the rim depth is 19mm.

It is made from 6066-T6 aluminium alloy which has a higher impact resistance than 6061. Hunt says that the rim is suited to tyre widths from 35-50mm.

Mason X Hunt H 650B Adventure Sport Disc Ceramik hub - 1

The rear wheel uses freehub that engages in just 5° following coasting and, like the other wheels below, features Hunt's new H_Ceramik freehub body reinforcement coating which is also found on the Hunt 30 Carbon Dynamo Disc wheel that Dave Atkinson reviewed for us earlier in the year. This makes the surface of the alloy extremely hard so there's no need for a steel insert to stop the sprockets biting into the metal. It does an excellent job.

Hunt 4 Season Gravel Disc X-Wide - 1

The Hunt 4 Season Gravel Disc X-Wide wheelset (£329) uses the same H_Ceramik freehub body coating and the same rim profile but it's a 700c size.

Hunt 650B Adventure Carbon Disc 2019 - 1

The 650B Adventure Carbon Disc wheelset (£899) has a unidirectional T24/30 rim (with 3K weave reinforced spoke holes) with a 24mm internal width and a 30mm external width. It's 22mm deep.

This one has the H_Ceramik coating on the freehub body too. The wheels are easily adapted to different  axle standards with push fit end caps.

Froome or Thomas? Wiggins looks ahead to Tour de France

Sir Bradley Wiggins has been looking ahead to next month's Tour de France on his Eurosport podcast - and particularly, what the dynamic might be between the Team Ineos pairing of four-time winner Chris Froome and defending champion Geraint Thomas.

He says that Thomas would work for Froome if he needed to - but repeatedly said that he hopes the Welshman is in the same form he was last year when he clinched the yellow jersey.

No prizes for guessing who the Wiggins household hopes will do better out of ythe pair.

Lime-E bike in Ealing (copyright Simon MacMichael)

Dockless hire bike reportedly damages car after falling in it - so who is liable?

An interesting piece over on Guardian Money at the weekend. A Lime docklesss hire bike reportedly fell onto a parked car, causing £900 damage, but the company is refusing to compensate the vehicle's owner, and says it is the responsibility of whoever last hired the bike.

However, it won't reveal the identity of that person unless it is forced to od so under a subpoena - read the full story here.

The other issue that occurs to us is, if you do hire one of their bikes and leave it well away from parked cars and later get a £900 bill because someone else (without hiring it) moved it or even deliberately damaged the car with the bike, how would you feel?

Magnus Backstedt announces he will ride the Race Across America next week as part of eight man team

He kept that one quiet... up until now, as Swedish former pro and the 2004 Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt just announced last night that he will compete in the Race Across America (RAAM) next week as part of an eight man team.

Proclaimed as 'the world's toughest bicycle race', RAAM has no stages and sees participants ride 3000 miles across 12 states to complete the course. Both amateurs and pros compete together and you can ride solo or in teams of 2, 4, 6 and 8 (solo riders have to meet qualifying criteria). Backstedt, now a respected coach, bike fitter and cycling commentator, is no stranger to endurance events outside of traditional pro cycling stage races and one day classics, having completed multiple Ironman triathlons since his retirement. He  will be riding to raise money for British military charities during his RAAM attempt along with his other seven teammates, and they have already raised nearly £5,000 on their JustGiving page - they're not just there to make the numbers up either, and are aiming to win the team category in under six days according to the page blurb. Click here to donate to his team's cause, and click here to find out more about RAAM. It kicks off on Tuesday 11th June.

Two thirds of Beglian cyclists don't wear helmets, say national statistics

Last years Brussels cycle-free day

Recent figures from Belgium have found that 68% of cyclists don't wear helmets, report the Brussels Times. In the Walloon region it's even higher at 71%, and only Hungary and the Netherlands have a lower rate of helmet use nationally.

The Belgian road safety institute Vias reported that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a serious head injury by 60% in the event of an accident. They also said that in autopsies of cyclists who died in accidents and did not wear a helmet, 37% of them could have survived if they had worn one; however the Flemish cycling policy centre Fietsberaad found that helmets don't offer much protection in accidents with high-speed or heavy vehicles such as cars, lorries and trucks, but they do provide protection in collisions with objects and lower speed falls.

Fietsberaad also say that safer cycling comes from proper cycling infrastructure, which explains the Netherlands higher safety rates even though helmet use is low.

Almost seven out of ten drivers want bikes to have licence plates, according to survey

paperwork

It might not exactly come as a surprise considering the survey participants were all motorists, but alas Motoring Research have reported that insurance company InsuretheGap have published results of a survey that says 68% of respondents think that bikes should be licensed and insured. Other stats include 53% thinking that cyclists should need to pass a test to cycle, and bizarrely 44% want cyclists to pay Vehicle Excise Duty, even though bicycles don't produce any emissions.

Ben Wooltorton, CEO of InsuretheGap, said: “The explosion in bike usage in recent years is good news for the environment and should also help to ease congestion in urban areas if managed correctly.

“However, our survey picked up a definite feeling among motorists that they are often held to higher standards than their fellow road users when it comes to adherence to the Highway Code.

“Our survey also particularly highlighted that motorists are concerned about road funding, safety and also insurance, which isn’t currently compulsory for cyclists, unlike most other road users.”

Ironically InsuretheGap fail to mention the gap in serious collisions between those involving bicycles and those involving cars, the latter (and those that operate them) of which are responsible for around 1,700 deaths per year.

One third of disabled people in UK cities would like to start cycling but face barriers, according to research

London cyclists at Hyde Park Corner (copyright Britishcycling.org_.uk).jpg

The “Inclusive cycling in towns and cities” report, published today by Sustrans and Arup highlights that women, older and disabled people continue to be neglected in cycling.

Almost 84% of disabled people living in the UK’s biggest cities never cycle for local journeys according to the research, even though a third say they would like to start cycling. 32% of women and 15% of those over 65 also say they would like to cycle.

The report uses data from Bike Life 2017, the largest assessment of cycling in seven major cities, and interviews with 12 focus groups consisting of women, older people and disabled people with reduced mobility, learning difficulty, hearing loss, partial sight, or mental health conditions. It found that people from these demographic groups face systematic barriers to either beginning to cycle, or to cycling more. Reasons include an association that cycling isn’t an activity for people like ‘them’, safety concerns, lack of cycling infrastructure and the high cost of adaptive cycles.

The report recommends ensuring better representation of underrepresented groups in policy and planning, creating better cycle routes, reducing traffic and providing better access to cycle training and to adapted cycles.

e-bike vs electric car... e-bike wins

On yesterday's live blog we caught wind of a 'sustainable race' between a VOLT e-bike and a Renault Twizy over 532 miles... and the e-bike, with the record breaking e-biker Chris Ramsey atop of it, ending up winning comfortably thanks to the quicker recharging and better range than the car.

Have you hit your ‘alimentary limit’? Scientists identify maximum sustainable level of exertion

EtapeDuTour2015-LeCoqSportive-TiredTim-©RufusExton

According to research conducted at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, all endurance athletes have a metabolic limit – a maximum level of exertion that is sustainable in the long term.

Above the limit of 2.5 times a person's resting metabolic rate, the body begins to feed on itself to obtain the additional calories needed to function.

“This defines the realm of what’s possible for humans,” said study co-author Herman Pontzer, an associate professor of evolutionary anthropology, who believes the limiting factor is most likely the digestive tract’s ability to break down food.

“There’s just a limit to how many calories our guts can effectively absorb per day,” he said.

The study measured daily calories burned by a group of athletes who ran six marathons a week for five months as part of the 2015 Race Across the USA. It also looked at other feats of endurance including the Tour de France, Antarctic treks and pregnancy.

Plotted over time, the data for all events formed an L-shaped curve where athletes’ energy expenditure started out relatively high, but dropped and flattened out at 2.5 times their basal metabolic rate for the remainder of the event.

Those who ran a single marathon used 15.6 times their resting metabolic rate; Tour de France riders used 4.9 times their resting metabolic rate; a 95-day Antarctic trekker used 3.5 times the resting metabolic rate.

"You can do really intense stuff for a couple of days, but if you want to last longer then you have to dial it back," Pontzer told BBC News.

The maximum sustainable energy expenditure found among endurance athletes was only slightly higher than the metabolic rates women sustain during pregnancy, which suggests that the same physiological limits constrain other aspects of life too, such as how big babies can grow in the womb.

Horse riders and cyclists encouraged to “Be Nice, Say Hi” in Surrey Hills

Visitors to the Surrey Hills are being encouraged to “Be Nice, Say Hi”, in a joint campaign from Cycling UK and The British Horse Society (BHS).

The two charities are encouraging cyclists to drop their pace and call out a greeting, giving the horse and rider time to react before overtaking wide and slow.

Duncan Dollimore, Cycling UK’s head of campaigns said: “Every time a cyclist encounters a horse, there are three brains involved: the cyclist’s, the rider’s and the horse’s. Many people aren’t familiar with horses, and there can be confusion on what they should do when overtaking on a bike.

“Cyclists may already know to pass wide and slow when it’s safe to do so – but they could still startle the horse unless the horse and rider are made aware of your presence.

“Generally, if a cyclist startles a horse, it is due to simple lack of awareness that a horse needs more time to react, which is why Cycling UK is pleased to be helping the BHS promote the consideration and courtesy message of ’Be Nice, Say Hi’ and is delighted to see it adopted in the Surrey Hills.”

The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the first area in the South East to take up the initiative.

Cannondale SuperX for Dirty Kanza 200-mile race

The EF Education First riders who raced Dirty Kanza last weekend - Alex Howes, Taylor Phinney and Lachlan Morton - did so on Cannondale SuperX cyclocross bikes but modified to suit the rigours of the 200-mile gravel race. The trio used Vittoria Terreno Dry file tread tyres in 38 and 40mm widths and fitted to FSA AGX gravel wheels.

Course tracking and navigation were via Garmin Edge 1030 computers with backup batteries, and as tracking devices are required for all riders each had a Garmin inReach Mini stuffed in the Rapha frame pack. The frame pack was the preferred choice for carrying all the essentials after testing by the team, along with a saddle bag for spare tubes.

Even with the frame pack there was space for two larger water bottles. Taylor Phinney instead preferred to use a hydration pack to meet the demands of staying hydrated for the long race.

View this post on Instagram

The words creaked from my throat, “I’m starting to come undone pretty bad man” @lachlanmorton retorted in just above a whisper, “That’s the point of this whole thing. Everybody’s f*cked. We’ve got 100km to catch those guys” It was at this moment, deep deep deep in the white hot pits of heatstroke, dehydration, blurring vision & cramps w/ nothing but more sun & bottles full of dust for comfort that I began to understand what @dirtykanza was all about. This was not a bike race, this was not a, “fun ride” or a tour for peligros and ham ‘n’ eggers, this was a vision quest, a truly epic journey, a battle not against other riders but w/ the hard bleached sun above & the heart, mind, soul & dust packed lungs within. We slogged our way to the final aid station and wobbled to a stop. I had serious thoughts about quitting right there. Not because I wanted to but because reaching the finish seemed physically impossible. But after packing my shorts with ice, chugging a double sized coke and dumping four mega sized bottles of ice water over my head, our support crew of @tqhopper @jvaughters @marywruns my father @joel.howes61 & @matthewcbeaudin were able to coax me out of the shade & back into motion. The rest was just a blur of pain and Lachlan’s pink shoes going up & down, up & down. A never ending Groundhog Day vortex of cramps and hills topped with runaway summits. But then... kissed by fair winds, we were delivered to the town of Euphoria. Sorry, EMPORIA. Wait, no, I’m calling it what it was: Euphoria. Lach and I rolled into Euphoria, grinning ear to ear, nourishing ourselves with the high fives from spectators, proud of ourselves, proud of all the others riders that dared to take part in such an event, proud and in awe of the human spirit. Thank you to the town of Emporia for giving this event all the love & support it deserves. Thanks @dirtykansas for allowing us to come out & be a part of the gravel community. Thank you to all the riders, fans, & random kind Kansas folk that said, “good luck” “hi” “have fun” and “your crazy” this weekend. & thank you to the @ef family for supporting our dreams. by @jordan_clark_haggard & @gregerwinphoto

Froome says it was “quite nice” to just watch the Giro on TV

The Criterium du Dauphine starts on Sunday. Chris Froome will be leading an Ineos team that will also feature Vasil Kiryienka, Michal Kwiatkowski, Gianni Moscon, Wout Poels, Ian Stannard and Dylan van Baarle.

The Dauphiné is a more conventional build-up to the Tour de France for Froome after last year’s win in the Giro d’Italia.

“It was quite nice in a way watching the Giro on the TV and actually not racing,” said Froome. “Also remembering my feelings coming out of the Giro last year – it’s so different to how I feel right now. Hopefully I’ll be a lot fresher now coming into this next block and more ready to race, as opposed to being on the back foot trying to recover from the Giro.”

Speaking about team-mate Pavel Sivakov, who finished ninth in Italy, Froome added: “Pavel was very, very impressive. For a 21 year old to have ridden a top 10 in just his second Grand Tour – that takes some doing and it goes a long way to showing what kind of engine he has for the future.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger security guard pulls taser on man suspected of trying to steal Terminator star's bike

A security guard working for Arnold Schwarzenegger pulled a taser on a man suspected of trying to steal a $5,000 electric bike belonging to the Terminator star.

The incident, which was filmed by bystanders including Douglas Nichols who posted footage to Instagram, happened on Friday morning in Venice, Los Angeles as the actor turned politician left a gym, reports TMZ.com, which also has still photos taken by people in the vicinity.

Nichols wrote: "Gold’s Gym this morning, witnessed Arnold's security pull a taser on man who was trying to steal Arnold's bike."

The suspected thief was reportedly held at bay by the security guard holding the taser, though it does not appear that the electric shock weapon was triggered.

Schwarzenegger, seemingly unfazed – and like the would-be thief, apparently untased – was said to have picked up his custom bike, which has a camouflage paintjob, and posed for photos with fans, before riding away.

Yahoo! News said it was unclear if the incident had been reported to the police, adding that the Los Angeles Police Department had not responded to any calls regarding an attempted bike theft at Gold’s Gym.

We’ve featured a number of stories regarding the 71-year-old over the years who is a keen cyclist and likes to get in the saddle while travelling around the world.

Four years ago, he was pulled over by a police officer in Melbourne, Australia for riding a bike without a cycle helmet, while the following year saw him filmed cycling on the wrong side of the road in Edinburgh, as well as getting stopped again by police for riding a bike through a train station in Germany.

In 2017, he joined then world road champion Peter Sagan and Mayor of Paris Anna Hidalgo in calling on governments around the world to make it easier for people to use bikes instead of cars for everyday journeys to help fight climate change and reduce air pollution.

A group calling themselves the 'Taxpayers' Alliance' don't appear to know the difference between tax and a fine

You may have heard of the TaxPayers' Alliance, which claims to be a "non-partisan grassroots campaign for lower taxes and government transparency" but in reality is a right-wing lobby group that has received hundreds of thousands of pounds in funding from the US; it is often wheeled out on BBC News to provide [checks notes] balance on stories about increased public psending - such as on cycle lanes.

Today, it has attracted criticism by describing fines for motorists breaking new 20mph limits in London as a 'tax' - while also suggesting there is no evidence that lower speed limits save lives (spoiler - they do, and there is a wealth of studies to back that up). Cue the rightfully cutting and sarcastic stream of replies ...

Looking at the TaxPayer's Alliance website they appear to be a legitimate operation with an 18-strong team, although we're not too sure who's funding them. Most of their tweets and blog posts seem to read like something from a Jacob Rees-Mogg manifesto, if such a thing existed, with one praising Donald Trump's lowering of taxes for big businesses in the US and another claiming that cutting taxes for corporations like Amazon would lead to economic growth in the UK.

Skoda launch a car for cyclists

Long story short, it has a roof rack and a drinks cooler.

But what else makes a car a "cyclist's car"? Well, according to Skoda, you'll need to fit it out with a pressure washer for cleaning off some amazingly muddy road bikes.

Then obviously, you'll want to strip off in a car park and do your laundry before you get home to your washing machine. So you'll be needing a washing machine in the boot. They don't specify how you'll dry the kit, but we're sure it'll be fine tied to the aerial...

Who needs seats anyway? You'll obviously want to leave one of your children at home so that your bike can ride along in the car. Then be sure to take your other two bikes on the roof rack.

But oh gosh! A mechanical has befallen you en route. Not to worry! You've got a specific place for a toolbox. You could never just put that in the boot.

If you're still thinking 'wow! This is the car for me', then, unfortunately, it's just a concept car. So sad, but don't worry, you can still have "a KAROQ Velo inspired accessory package, which includes a ŠKODA Multi-tool, ŠKODA Bicycle tyre pump and bracket and ŠKODA Bicycle Lights". Available to order from local ŠKODA Retailers.

Have Skoda not heard of simply riding from home?

Paul Smith x Rapha jersey pops up on ebay for £125,000. Again...

We can only assume the last auction wasn't successful, because once more we've spotted this jersey described as "a piece of cycling history" pop up on ebay for the princely sum of £125,000. While it's quite nice we just can't see that it's nice enough to cost the same as a house, which got us thinking... why is the seller asking for such an extortionate amount? Is he/she hoping someone very rich and gullible will come along, or is there more to the story? If miraculously the seller happens to be reading this, or anyone can shed any light, do let us know in the comments!

...here's a load of mountain bikes in South Wales spotted flaunting their Bike Balls. They're available from a selection of retailers with a puerile sense of humour nationwide...

Change of name for Team Dimension Data as parent company NTT rebrands business?

A change of name could be on the cards for Team Dimension Data as its sponsor's parent company NTT - in full, Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, the fourth largest telecoms business in the world - brings the business under its own corporate identity.

Inner Ring's suggestion that the team could relaunch ahead of the Tour de France - a race for which Dimension Data also provides data services - seems like a good call.

You couldn't make it up etc...

As Kil0ran says in the comments section, there is almost insufficient levels of popcorn in the world to get us through this Whyte vs Rich Energy saga - as a photo is now doing the rounds of Rich Energy Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean riding... a WHYTE mountain bike! Awkward...

And continuing the Twitter madness...

...Alex Dowsett, the Katusha-Alpecin pro cyclist has been casually schooling a disgruntled motorist on Twitter who got rather upset at having to pass a small group of riders who were riding two abreast.

It seems that the issue with this photo is that by sitting just off the wheel in front, which is a sensible group ride safety measure, the group appears to be 3 abreast in places. So, should we all be religiously sticking to the wheel in front of us?

Whyte Bikes still locked in bizarre online battle of words with energy drink brand, who were sued for copying the Whyte logo

For some context to the above, energy drink brand and sponsor of the Haas F1 team Rich Energy burst onto the scene with a logo that looked remarkably similar to the distinctive antler logo used by Whyte Bikes - Whyte noticed, and so took Rich Energy to court a couple of months ago and won quite convincingly. The judge said: "I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that both Mr Kelly and Mr Storey (Rich Energy's CEO and web designer respectively) have lied about not being familiar with Whyte’s logo. I find it more likely than not that they were familiar with it, and that they directly and knowingly copied it."

Case closed? It appears not, as Rich Energy continue to use the logo and make childish swipes on social media. Whyte couldn't help but do some trolling of their own, placing their logo on a Mercedes F1 poster - to which Rich Energy's social media person clearly didn't get the joke, bizarrely saying in their Tweet above: we are actually investing money in F1 while you are investing zero".

The brand are still getting something of a pasting in the comments, we've picked some of the best for you below. Anyone actually ever seen a can of Rich Energy in a shop, by the way?

Why not?

Just a shame about the congestion around them!
